You are 100% correct. It’s what I’m trying to say, people won’t stick around for long if the footie is no good. Even more so nowadays. I remember the 8000 odd in the ground at the end of the Burley era(I was one of them that day). A lot of the fans have jumped on the band wagon,we know that and they will be gone again if we don’t get promoted either this season or next. I really think it has to be this season, next is going to be really tough. People need to be entertained in today’s climate or it doesn’t hold their interest Im afraid. There are a couple of guys in front of me who have already stated they won’t be back because the football we play isn’t great and the woman and her son next to me said they aren’t coming again because a)they can’t afford it and b)”we don’t play like we used to” her words not mine.

Perhaps they’re just being polite. Maybe there’s another reason why the people who sit immediately in front of you and next to you don’t want to attend any more. 🤔

They haven't even won this game yet FFS.

Such a defeatist attitude in our fanbase sometimes!

I wonder if some of the more vocal fans on this thread will be chirping up to say how great we are compared to Boro, given that we won 2-0 at Coventry and played them off the park. I suspect not somehow.

Championship innit. We seem to have a lot more control about us at times. At Cov we were happy to take the sting out of the game and crowd in the 1st half, O'Shea and Kipre putting their foot on the ball and controlling the tempo. The recent Cov / Boro / Sheff United games have been like basketball matches, intentionally chaotic, which to the eye looks exciting but they become a bit of a coin toss.

Ultimately we just need to win our games. I always looked at Jan - March as potentially very fruitful, so far W4, D1, L1 is a good return and 2.17ppg since the turn of the year. Minimum 5 (ideally more) wins from the next 8 would set us up nicely for the run in.

I think it's the way that when Coventry or Boro string a few wins together some folks can't wait to label them as unbeatable and suggest we have no chance of catching them that I find quite frustrating. Both are capable of wobbles, and not just in one off matches either. If Sheffield United had been as clinical first half against Boro as they were against us that game would have looked very different too.

Since the end of the summer window, which was incredibly disruptive for us, we've taken 2 points more than Boro and 3 points fewer than Coventry but crucially we've played 2 fewer games than both. We're well in the mix and for me of the teams at the top we are the ones who are dominating most games most consistently. We're very solid at the back for the most part and we're able to score goals at a decent rate. We can still improve for sure but I would imagine Boro and Coventry are more worried about us than we should be about them.

I watched most of the match last night and thought Coventry looked so in control and bossing the game. I just looked at the stats, 'boro 71.5% possession plus 650 passes with 81.8% accuracy to Coventry's 251 with 66.5% and then there is 39 touches in the box to Coventry's 16. But also the same number of shots on target (4) whilst 'boro's nine off target compared to Coventry's three tells a tale for me along with Rushworth's three saves compared to Brynn's one.

So a bit of credit to Lampard for getting his team to concentrate on good finishing and I think Rushworth was by far the better keeper. A lesson for our upcoming home game, win our two in hand and get the right strategy to punish 'boro with a more clinicl approach to attack giving us teh second automatic place as it stands.

Well, that was a different performance. I only saw the 2nd half but Boro looked a shadow of the side that prompted this thread. It seems like we’re not the only ones who have trouble breaking down 10 men. It’s a funny old game.

"Championship innit"

This. 100% this.

I can't understand why so many of our support have a meltdown at every bump in the road, and often that bump is just watching other teams play.

The Championship has always been a division where anyone can beat anyone, and that includes teams beating us. We will lose sone more games we'd expect not to, and it is nailed on that both Coventry and Boro will have further wobbles too.

The phrase 'it's a marathon, not a sprint' is a perfect description of this league.

I thought Boro were the better team, I think they are a better team tbh and they'll finish higher than Cov. To their credit Cov got in their faces last night, they pressed aggressively and got the crowd onside, and crucially got the early goal which was probably the difference vs. Sheff United who started in a similar vein and didn't. Cov get the ball from back to front very quickly which Boro didn't do a good job of dealing with. The 2nd goal was really poor IMO, Ayling shouldn't be letting that bounce, its basics. They were a bit lucky with a similar long ball towards the end of the first half.

It's a 3 horse race for me, as its looked for a while. Hull & Wall are decent sides but I don't think either have enough about them to maintain a serious top 2 push.

But parachute payments has distorted the belief that any team can beat anyone.

I think that there has been a lot of overreaction on this forum and some of the defeatist posts have been comical. But I do have sympathy for anyone who suggests that the team should have more points considering how much money has been spent on it - don’t think that’s an unreasonable position to hold.

Very much hope this revival post ages well!

Boro's performance that night was so impressive, as was ours at the Ricoh. I remain in agreement with the OP that they will take some catching, which isn't equivalent to suggesting they can't be caught. Guthrum's predicted final table continues to champion them, reflective of clubs' medium-term form.

Perhaps surprisingly, odds compilers continue to favour Coventry for the title. That speaks more to balancing liabilities, my initial thought, but then Opta's not-so-supercomputer predicts the same order of likelihood: Cov 48.50%, Boro 33.38%, us 12.94%, others all below 3%.

I can understand why we're predicted to finish third, given our medium-term and overall away form, our imbalance of remaining away fixtures, and the points gap as it stands today. Successive away wins will see the computer begin to correct its view on our prospects. We had a string of three in November, otherwise it's not something we've managed. Let's right that worry on Saturday.

On Coventry, the opening few months must have left a whopping great imprint, for computers and compilers. Taking down and supplanting top of the table, impressive as it was, was nonetheless the exception to their recent norm. Off the canvas, sure, but not yet off the ropes.

Absolutely it is fine to be of the opinion that we might be slightly under performing the expectations we have, I think there is some merit in that view, but slight underpermance doesn't remotely warrant the reaction we regularly see on here.
