Utter rubbish. If there are three places for promotion the first three should go up. Yes you could say for some teams the season would be over half way through the season.
But it's just a money getting game for the wembley coffers. If that's the case that you must have three go up and have playoffs why don't they do the same to the teams in the bottom six.
If you finish ten points clear of the sixth team why should you play off against them. One mistake, one bad refereeing decision and a whole seasons toil is wrecked. Players leave, you start again and the chances are you aren't the team you were last season.
I know everyone knows the situation, but it is still very unfair and a waste of time and money. |  | | |

Do something like f1 points system but instead if financial gains..points
Where you finish in the league gets you bonus points for the following season.
Top 3 promoted
4th get 10 points for next season
5th get 9
6th get 8
Etc etc

Doesn't the national league do something like this and it's not worked out particularly well for those finishing higher in the league?
I know that was the case with York last year where Oldham just gained so much momentum from the first game whereas York hadn't had a match for a couple of weeks after the league finished

The lowest play-off place was occupied by Southend who finished a massive 34 points away from an automatic promotion spot, so why should they even get the chance of promotion?
I don't like the playoffs at best, but this change would be crazy. Imagine the team finishing 8th in the championship who are nowhere near good enough to get promotion actually going up to the Prem! Chances are they would get slaughtered.

The proper way to do it would be to scrap second legs altogether.
Match day 1
5th at home to 8th
6th at home to 7th
Match day 2
3rd at home to lowest ranked team remaining from match day 1
4th at home to highest ranked team remaining from match day 1
Final at Wembley
This would effectively give some sort of additional benefit for every place achieved higher than 8th. |
I first thought the OP is a terrible idea as there's no benefit to finishing 3rd over 8th, however I would actually go for your idea - it gives more teams a chance, but the best chance goes to the team who deserves it the most. |  |

It’ll backfire.
The CH is already starting to become stale with teams setting up defensively and a lot of them happy for draws. It’s only going to get worse if teams know they can finish on 65-68 points and still have a chance of promotion.

I might be in the minority but I like it for the national League. I think a lot of those teams would survive and aren't that far behind (if at all behind) some of the league 2 clubs.
I like it because the higher you finish the better draw you get. The current 2 legs, the only "better draw" is having the home game second leg.
However for the Championship to the PL, there is a big gulf especially over the last few years. That's why I'd be less for it for this league. | | | |
