Bands or artists you saw before they became big time 19:40 - Feb 15 with 3417 viewsJoey_Joe_Joe_Junior

I love smaller indie type gigs and always seek them out but I don’t think I’ve seen by that have propelled to selling out stadium type levels. I know Ed played a lot of free shows before he was a name. Anyone see him in Camden or anything? Pretty sure Blur played some free stuff at Clacton Pier.

A mate of mine flew to London to watch Oasis last year after watching them play in front of 100 people in a small venue in Cleveland in the mid 90s which I thought was awesome.

I don’t have any super cool stories like that really. Although In terms of festivals and thinking about the most famous star on the planet these days, I do remember Taylor Swift (still a teenager at the time I think) at V festival in around 2009. She was a a country gal back then and on really early in the day, no one was really paying loads of attention. Quite funny to think now she moves nations economies with her tours.

I saw Feeder 1998 at the waterfront they were just breaking through but not big.

Everclear were support, they were probably a bit bigger in the states though never mainstream. Equally good band.

Muse were supposed to support Skunk Anansie at a secret warm up gig at the same venue but for whatever reason did t which was a shame. Skunk came out to a cold room and absolutely tore the place up, have tickets to see them in June on a double header with Garbage.

One to look out for who are slowly getting traction though agsin I think will be bigger in the states, Robert Jon and the Wreck, incredible band I have been following for a while, saw them in Northampton last year, superb. If you like 70s rock, Eagles, Hendrix Led Zep, Tom Petty etc then check tjem out. Their guitar player is something else. Took the current Mrs BandT and after we left she said they were so good she actually cried.

Plan B, they day the Strickland Banks album came out in Oxford. Tbh that was probably his peak, everything subsequent has been disappointing but thag album blew up and he was excellent.

Everclear were a much better band than Feeder tbh, their first 2 albums still get heavy rotation in this house.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Madness & Squeeze on very early tours, but my biggest-band-on-smallest-stage would have to be a comeback gig by Blondie, mid-80s, at the Borderline next toTottenham Court Road Station. All-standing crowd of maybe 150, and I was front row, falling in love with a 40-year-old for the first time ever...

Much more recently, up-and-coming singer-songwriter on the folk scene Katherine Priddy, who in 12 months I saw at the Palladium (opening for Richard Thompson), FolkEast and Blaxhall Village Hall; her spring tour this year has her playing the Union Chapel in Islington and similarly-sized venues as she grows in popularity.

Saw the Dave Clarke Five at Bigmore Hall in Haverhill in the early 60s. Beatles in Cambridge Regent around that time too. Haverhill was pretty good for up and coming bands when i was young and single. Marriage and kids soon put paid to that.

Katherine Priddy is a good live act, isn't she ? As well as FolkEast I have seen her at Bearded Theory (half empty tent, boo you blinkered punky / gothy / metalheady / dance beaty Midlanders - but only on this occasion, decent taste generally) which she said she played because of her Radio Six Dad.

Not quite on all fours with the OP but how about seeing big stars appearing at unusual events.

I went to a wedding at which Suggs was a guest.

The singer for the booked band was late, so Suggs took to the stage and performed some Madness songs until he turned up.

On his arrival, the singer said, "How do I follow that?"

I can find no evidence of Taylor Swift at Latitude, Junior was interested.

I said V Festival.

I 100% saw her in Chelmsford, probably one of the first times she ever played in the UK, unless I dreamt it.

I remember she was on really early, we walking around having a drink waiting for things to get going. I don't think she was really a familiar name outside the US at the time. The main stage day crowd were waiting around and getting their places for Lily Allen lol. Pretty sure Killers headlined later that night.

Fat boy slim, Calvin Harris, the Specials and Dizzy were all there as well.

The Libertines (Barfly, Camden) & The Coral (ULU, Southbank). I guess the Coral didn't get huge, but should have been.

I’ve posted it before , because I am very proud of it and “Look at me” I saw Buddy Holly who had had two big hits before then .My brother’s friend who was with us has still got the ticket stubs and the programme signed by Buddy and the two crickets . I would imagine the programme is worth several hundred quid.

Interesting I saw on FB the other day that a charity shop in Manningtree had some decent Beatles memorabilia for sale, not sure what that’s got to do with the price of chips but there you go.

I don't know about Beatles memorabilia, but the market in Elvis Presley memorabilia plummeted as much of the stuff was owned by oldies, they died & their kids simply wanted to sell it on eBay. Slightly later generation but I reckon the same thing will happen to Beatles stuff.

Late 1970s, I went to Essex Uni in Wivenhoe, Colchester to see legendary, to me, west coast american band Spirit.
Second on the bill were XTC, but bottom of the bill and playing their first gig outside London ( I'm pretty sure that was what they said ) were The Police. I thought at the time they may have something about them.

There is a lot of Beatles “memorabilia” about. The problem is often proving that it is genuine.

Radiohead in the first floor bar at ULU in London, late autumn 96, shortly after they released Creep for the first time. Not even a proper venue, just on the floor by the bar. 20-30 in attendance. Good show, playing their Pablo Honey material.

Another one I've recalled.

Saw CMAT (Now headlining festivals and BIG venues like Ally Pally) in the Sunrise Arena at Latitude in 2021. Was just her and a guitar as she couldn't afford to bring a band with her.

When I was at college in Northampton in the early 90s, for the summer ball one year, the MC for the night started off his introduction with

"Bands only come to Northampton twice - once on their way up, and once on their way down in their careers.... so without further ado we'd like to say a big 'welcome back' to Bad Manners..."

- Buster Bloodvessel did not look too impressed at that!

Not famous yet, but pretty sure she will be very soon. Anna Pancaldi. Essex-based singer-songwriter. Extremely talented and has had a few songs featured on shows like Love Island and Strictly, amongst others.

Lovely lady to boot.

Wolf Alice opened for the band I played in in 2012. Just the frontwoman and guitarist, an acoustic duo at that stage playing lo-fi indie-folky stuff. Had a beer outside the venue with them afterwards, they were saying they'd got a drummer sorted, just needed to find a bassist and they'd be looking to start doing some bigger venues.

Wished them the best of luck. Can only assume I forgot for a moment it was bass I play.

They were on the main stage at Glastonbury two years later.

I was not.

Haha...brilliant!
I played in a very average school heavy metal band back in the 80's. This younger lad used to keep turning up at our practice sessions and was desperate to join us. We kept telling him to foxtrot oscar.
Anyway, our band ended up going nowhere and this young lad went on to form Cradle Of Filth and ended up selling thousands of albums! Talk about sliding doors...if we had relented, Dani Filth could have ended working a 9 to 5 like the rest of us!
