Suffolk Show ground 07:46 - Feb 20 with 3012 viewsashtonscoffeecup

Dropped the family at the circus yesterday, and it got me thinking, the Suffolk Show Ground wouldn't be the worse place to relocate the football stadium (IF it ever came to the point of needing a new ground)
of course the land wouldn't be up for sale, and of course it would take years to develop and get it right, but - its got a train line across the road (new station with trains running from Ipswich), quick access to the A12/14, loads of room (car parks/restaurants/sports bars)

edit - 11 downvotes for an absolutely nothing comment, is this how this place works is it? cool

I seem to remember talk of it in the past as a possibility and that before the continuous urban sprawl and its tentacles had reached it.
I can’t see us moving now to be honest maybe in the past.

Absolutely would be the worst place. Dread the thought.

Portman Road.

(In all seriousness, Alderman Park/Constantine Rd bus depot could be an option, but there’s no need to build a completely new stadium anyway)

Off-topic I know but I do think that many fans take the location of the ground for granted. Near to the town centre, near to the train station and the practice pitch/ fan park thing is great especially when the weather is warm.

I’ve been to many grounds that are miles away from anything.

yeah in agreement, we'd never move away from PR anyway, but worse case - SSG wouldnt ruin football for me (personally)

Alderman Park a decent sized area, that river/land is seriously boggy in the winter months, would take some sorting out

The location of PR is absolutely perfect, we are seriously lucky in that regard.

certainly not suggesting moving it, but that site is huge and "could" be developed into something pretty fantastic.

It is a perfect football stadium in my eyes. We are very lucky

The rail infrastructure would need a major improvement there as it can only support an hourly passenger service amongst all of the freight. Ipswich station is getting busier and busier on match days with supporters travelling in all directions. Whatever they would build as a car park there probably won't be big enough.

On another point, I'm sure that there are a number of businesses in the town centre that are heavily reliant on matchday income.

I hope we never leave Portman Road, but maybe we could build a women's /reserve team stadium there if we don't plan to use Col U's ground forever

It's more than just a football stadium, it's a community football stadium - with the club in the middle of the community it is part of.

That is what gets lost when you move a club out of the town.

West Ham is perfect example of a community football club whp has lost touch with their fan base.

One of the great things about our club is the age PR and its location (more or less) in the town centre. It echoes with the ghosts of European nights, Bobby Robson and even more recent nights like the Southampton 3-2 match. When I talk to fans of other clubs, they without fail say how much they love the ground and its atmosphere, often describing us a "proper" club because of it.

I mean yeah, the UK's infrastructure has been left to rot for the 40-odd years, so it's a nightmare to drive to from out of town, and public transport is unreliable and eye-wateringly expensive, so the modern answer would be to move to the edges of the town near a motorway, along with all the town centre shops.

But I couldn't imagine a duller experience than parking up, going to some generic "sports bar" and then taking in a seat in an identikit modern ground. My walk down Princes Street, past the Willis and GRE buildings and then seeing the ground loom up is one of the best things about living in Ipswich.

Well said.

Whenever I go to away grounds and there are some good ones I always think "this isn't as good as Portman Road". The club have also done a great job modernising it but keeping its character.

I could be wrong but I thought plans for the new training ground incorporated a small stadium for the women’s and academy sides?

I may well have made this up.

No, there were reliable rumours that the club will buy the Ipswich Wanderers ground/land and build a little stadium on that site.

Leave it where it is but flip it round, and build it out into the old training ground behind the West stand and the car park behind the East Stand.
Ok I'm assuming the club who have to ground share for a season.
Plus I'm guessing they would have to knock down the houses behind the North stand.
But its still the perfect location.

As for the show ground build a load of houses on it, we need more housing

They held talks over a very lengthy period but think they ultimately broke down, although could be revived, of course.

I would think somewhere around the Rushmere / Playford sites would be most likely if this were to happen.

I asked a similar question about a year ago and like you, got the downvote treatment!

To be clear I agree it should stay where it is. But the one advantage, should we be looking for a massive rebuild or refurb, is no disruption to the current ground while new one is built. Would rather not have a season and a half of men's team playing at Colchester!
