I'll share something I've not shared before (why would I!) But I'm a lifelong sufferer of various motor tics, very much on the same spectrum as tourettes, though never had the vocal tics.
Some of the explanations in this thread of how it affects the brain are spot on. It really is a case of fighting your brain's urge to do something, whether that is a facial tic, swearing, coughing before you speak, any number if things that you evidently don't want to do. To an extent you can suppress it, but can be an exhausting battle at times, and its usually temporary. The more stressed you are the more the brain gets active in a way you don't want it to. I take pretty strong meds to slow down my brain activity.
Edit: probably a better word/phrase than stress would be over stimulation. The more you throw at the brain, the more it reacts.
The phrase 'involuntary' is key. You don't want to do it, but find it hard to stop it, even though you know its about to happen.
I'm lucky that it doesn't impact my life really, insofar as that i decided years ago that I wouldn't let it, but I can't imagine how debilitating it must be to have tourette syndrome, as what I have can be utterly exhausting mentally.

(I speak as someone with an adjacent condition in OCD, which can morph into tic-like symptoms sometimes. I once featured in the Kilburn TImes tweet of the day, as someone spotted me doing a fairly manic verbal outburst on the High road there - I try to see the funny side and take some pride from this!)

it's such a shame that all of those who are 'outraged' didn't bother their arses to watch the film (that won 3 BAFTAs at the same event) - a key point of the film was to educate people like them as to exactly why outbursts by people with Tourettes shouldn't be considered a slur...

Funnily enough I also have some OCD tendencies and can definitely recognise that it's the same part of my brain being a nob.
I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun.
I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.
I have a close family member who has Tourette's syndrome. Approximately 10% of Tourette's sufferers have the type which provokes extreme or profane verbal tics. Thankfully,.my family member doesn't present with this type, but he will say inappropriate things sometimes about people.
Most often it is when he is attending an event or doing an activity he is excited about, or with people he enjoys being around. The over stimulation and imbalance of neurotransmitters such as dopamine makes him say and do things he knows full well the people around him will find irritating, but his attempts to self regulate result in him thinking of all of the things he shouldn't say or do, and he can't stop his brain from forcing out those behaviours.
As has been mentioned above, it is an exhausting, genuine condition that is more distressing to the sufferer than those impacted by the tics, guaranteed.
Anyone saying Davidson meant it is most likely an ignoramus.

I think the only obvious thing in all of this is that the BBC should have edited out the slur in their broadcast.
I agree that it is ignorant of anyone to suggest that using the word betrays some underlying racist views or anything like that, it must be awful to live with tourettes knowing that at times of high stress and when most inappropriate the involuntary outbursts becomes more likely.
However, I find it odd that as far as I can see none of the posts on this thread has discussed this from the point of view of the two black actors on stage who were the subject of the outburst, I realise it wasn't directed at them with any intent, but that word is going to have an impact whether intended or not. I don't know what the right answer is, but where is the line when one person’s uncontrollable symptoms may deeply impact another.
