Albums that age like fine wines 11:55 - Mar 1 with 2310 viewsGeoffSentence

Anyone got any albums they listen to that just seem to get better with the years?

For me it's The Black Album by The Damned.

When I brought it back home 46 years ago I was a touch disappointed with it, being a big departure from the sound of their first their first three albums. I stuck with it and came to enjoy it. Listening to it now that it just seems to be a magnificent work. Even Curtain Call which took up all of side 3 and which I tended to skip over, I really enjoy now. Those organ sounds give it real atmosphere.

Mind you I still skip the live side.

Anyone got any similar albums that seem so much better today than on release?

I love NMTB by the Pistols but its not a vintage fine wine, more like punchy bottle of occasionally opened pernod!

Absolute classic


Yeah, that’s a great album. If I was going to pick one that will never age, Super Ape I reckon.

I listened to a few of the late Perry albums, and they’re actually really good too: Rainford and Heavy Rain are well worth a listen.

I would say “This is soul” A compilation album from the mid 60s which every student owned. Timeless music.

Prince Sign O The Times. Far too many songs to take in on initial listening. An album that keeps surprising you on every listen. Also The Beatles White Album for the same reason.

Steve McQueen si a great shout but I loved it from the moment I bought it so it hasn't got better over the years.

Now Jordan The Comeback is another matter entirely. Hardly played it when it came out. Didn't appreciate it but now I believe it's a work of genius.

Totally get that, a large part of it for me is probably nostalgia which means I go into it accepting it. I was 13/14 when I bought it and it was among the first few albums I bought that were 'mine'.

I think 14 year old me bought into the whole feel about them too and felt completely horrified and betrayed when he went into the Too Rye Ay (sp?) thing, I hated that at the time.

The 15 years between 1970 and 1985 produced the most eclectic mix of musical genre ever really, absolutely spot on about how lucky we were!

I think the rave scene was the last subculture in British music. The internet and social media has destroyed it all, sadly.

I'm not sure if albums like Who's Next or Crosby, Stills and Nash fit your criteria as I guess they were fine albums on release, so I'll go with Paul Weller's debut solo LP.
Other than Quadrophenia, probably my most played LP.
It didn't do too much in it's release but it just gets better as the years go by for me.
Still as relevant as it ever was.


You beat me to it with the first Paul Weller solo album.

I also go back to High Land, Hard Rain by Aztec Camera quite often and love it more every time I play it.
