It did have one of those nights written all over it 07:11 - Mar 4 with 1412 viewsmuccletonjoe

Hull had certainly come with the aim to stop us playing and break up the flow. But what a strike from Matisuwa that was ! , and how important it might prove to be. I am still not sure how Clarke didn't score a second goal , but thankfully it didn't matter. Although it could have saved us from a nervy last few minutes.
On to the third home game of the week and Leicester City , which will have a special day attached for me. Obviously , they have got major problems this season , but it still requires a job to be done. We still have philogene to return to the team , hopefully very soon and the defence last night looked solid even though there were several careless balls being played at times.
We now seem to have a spirit in the squad similar to that of our last promotion which is now being recognised on the terraces.

Seemed a really lazy finish from Clarke, not quick enough. Needed to hit it with his right foot surely, didn’t matter in the end but would’ve been nice to have been a bit more comfortable.

Give the Hull keeper some credit, was an excellent save, to shift his position across the goal and spread himself, also I think Clarke was surprised that Burns chose to square the ball rather than shoot. Either way that’s a few times this season when the opposition keeper has pulled off a truly top class save against us.

We benefitted from a bit of luck last night with how the ball fell to Leif before he slid it across to Matusiwa. I wasn’t seeing where a goal was coming from. There was no luck about the finish though!

A hard won 3 points and it’s great to see Hull’s brand of ‘football’ fail. Everyone played their part. Clarke should have scored and could also have set up an excellent chance on the break. Otherwise he was heavily involved and lively. It frustrates me than he holds onto it too long sometimes, but he is what he is and we have to take the rough with the smooth with him - there’s lots of smooth! :)

By rights, the left back shouldn't be in that position, but we continually mix things up on the left and good things happen.

Maybe so but he did kick it back in his direction, right foot power into the corner was needed?

Then the post on the follow up was unlucky as it came back very quick.

Depends how he sets himself - either or for me - his body shape / feet just not quite right when it came across to him

This. It resulted in a brilliant chance for Clarke so I can't say Wes chose the wrong option but sitting in the North Lower when the ball came across to burns I was expecting the net to ripple with one of his signature finishes - it didn't even cross my mind he'd pass.

I think he spotted the GK flying across to his left (the GKs right) and tried to hit the ball into the opposite corner, which is why he used his left foot, but got it wrong. Which i admit its unusual for Clarke as he nearly always favours his right foot. Although you have to give the GK some credit, he moved at pace to cut down the angle

Its a bad miss end of.

Whilst the keeper makes a good save he shouldn't even be given a chance to make the save. Its a poor orr finish but I thought that whilst a lot didn't come off for Jack last night some of the crticism of his perforamnce was unwarranted. He was full of running, very industrrious and worked hard defensively. A solid 7 out of 10 performance but a shame he didn't take the chance that was begging to be slammed home.

He put the shot in probably the only place where the keeper had a chance to save it. In the middle of the goal and waist height. It was a poor finish.

Mehmeti forced the situation by committing the defenders, so yes there’s a strong argument for making our own luck. 🍀

The picture (being stationary) is a little misleading, tho. If he'd just hit it from there, the sideways momentum of the ball would almost certainly have taken it wide of the post. You combine the vectors (directional speed) to get the final path of the ball.

The options were taking a touch to kill the sideways before hitting it forward (taking time and losing available momentum), or using the elasticity of the ball to reflect maximum power back in a similar direction, requiring a high speed, if low deflection, intercept by the lunging 'keeper (which he made).

All, of course, the decision of a fraction of a second, pure footballing instinct.

I agree , not having a go at the lad , for one bad miss. He had 2 or 3 players around him most of the time he had the ball.

Not saying you personally were criticising him. But take Wallys post for instance. Plenty did seem to crticise him last night and i didn't understand it personally. Thought he played ok, just a lot didn't come off for him but he carried the ball, and as you say certainly occupied a couple of players down their right side most of the night.

I agree that the photo is a little misleading, but sorry Guthers, Burns played a perfectly weighted pass to the edge of the 6-yard box, Clarke was running forwards and onto the ball, with pretty much the whole goal to aim for plus a side foot for maximum accuracy with nobody challenging or between him and the goal (apart from the goalkeeper in one corner). It was a forward's dream!

Could have controlled it, side foot pea roll. Anything other than what he did which was chip it back right in the direction of the keeper. Which is why It's gotta go down more as a terrible miss rather than a great save.

I agree. People saying its a great save are just saying it to reduce criticism of Clarke.

He should score. he was too casual and hits it towards the goalie.

See Szmodics goal against Blackburn, same sort of ball from Burns, but perhaps finished from a more central position.
