Most kids probably want to be footballers because they love the game. Unfortunately, not all kids are very good at it so refereeing is a route into the it when they are older.

I coach an u10s team and at that level it's teenagers reffing and I have to say some of them are brilliant and it's fantastic for their confidence and all sorts of skills. Some of them play football and ref on the side. Some i think no longer play as perhaps weren't so good at playing but have found they are good at reffing.
So yes some of them do want to be refs because they love football and and it another way of connecting with it.
I think I'd be quite happy for my lad to ref in the side in a few years (but I'd be on the side) because except in circumstances of an awful human being parent) there are some good skills to be had from it. | |

Think it's better for kids to play the game first and understand it that way first before they take up refereeing. Rather than give them the textbook first, so to speak. Just find it a bit odd you'd want to be a referee as a kid, unless you've been bullied into by an overbearing parent. Another "great" idea... for the sake of it. Let kids be kids. | | | |
