Time to Move On (at your own pace) 08:41 - Mar 28 with 3978 viewsChris_ITFC

I get it. I honestly do. I was as p*ssed, dumbstruck, astonished, offended as anyone.

But that’s the best we’re getting. He’s fronted up, climbed down and apologised. You might not like the sentiment, you might be able to rip the words apart, but that’s it now. There won’t be anymore videos, apologies, statements, resignations or sackings.

You can either meet them in the middle, start to move on, and get back to enjoying your football club again or, sadly, this will end up spoiling something that is such a big, important part of your life. Unfortunately life isn’t perfect, but don’t let this or anyone spoil ITFC for you.

It's not good enough.

It's not the Ipswich Town I grew up supporting.

He's got to go.

He will, in the summer, please don’t let him damage the club any more than he already has done.

Just out of interest. And this is a genuine (albeit somewhat loaded) question.

What has he actually apologised for? Because I would argue that an apology for nothing is no apology at all.

So he's bigger than the club? Sorry, not prepared to accept that.

It won't affect my support for the team but it has significantly tarnished what I think of the institution. I wrote to him on Tuesday before the Athletic called the club's statement out and asked him to apologise and distance us from events. He's done one of those things in the most mealy mouthed way possible.

It's been a self-inflicted p1ss poor week for the club at a crucial time of the season. It's not good enough.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Happy to mee thtme in the middle.

But they havent moved to the middle. They have offered a generic "sorry if you are upset", with none of the answers that are needed, no hint of taking responsibility (other than "as chairman") and no hint of remorse (other than at being caught).

All too little too late. Damage is done.

He’s said the word sorry. I’m not saying that’s enough, but that’s not my point.

My point is - the Club have drawn their line now. There won’t be another apology, or anything like that. Staying angry or staying away will get you nowhere, other than spoiling something you love.

That’s on Ashton, but it will hurt you more than it hurts him now.

For now, it is. Sure, it shortens his future with us in the long term, but he’s not getting the sack. The owners don’t sanction the apology and then sack him.

So for the next 8 games, you can park it and enjoy a sweet promotion, or you can let this ruin it for you. Like I say, that IS sh*t, but you can’t hurt him as much as this will hurt you now.

Let's see how it all aligns in real life when our fan base are getting it from the opposition fans and the reality hits for Ashton that his actions has brought ridicule to our club.

There could be a scenario of Ashton out too, which is going to be an on pitch distraction.

Norwich away is going to be even more a testing environment, they are already on the wind up.

With respect, I disagree.

I'm not going to be doing anything to disrupt the team or promotion (tbf, I don't need to, our illustrious leader and CEO has done enough of that on his own).

I will, however, continue to engage with whataboutery and nonsense. I'm unlikely to start threads, as I'm not interested in sowing division, but I will engage with those that exist.

Ultimately words, and actions matter. Trust is built in years and destroyed in seconds. There is zero sign that anything has been learned or being done about any of this. To do nothing and ignore it is to be complicit.

Will I be outside campaigning and waving placards and shouting in an angry mob? No. But I won't be silenced either. Respect is a 2 way street.

It can't be parked, the damage is done. Here's a minor example.

Last night over tea, it transpired that on Thursday at college, it was 'wear who you are' day for charity. My daughter chose not to wear one of her Town shirts (we don't live in Suffolk) because she didn't want to spend the day either being mocked or associated with Reform and all the online memes that have followed. Last week, a Town shirt would simply have been a conversation starter and something she has worn with pride.
This wasn't something I or anybody else knew about or influenced, it was her decision.

This week has fundamentally changed some people's relationship with the club. It's not about 'elements of the community being hurt', it's about who we are, our pride in the badge and how we're perceived.

No amount of 'moving on' statements will change it.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I don’t feel as though I’m letting it ruin anything - I mean, it difficult enough to enjoy the promotion run in before this mess with the divisiveness we’ve seen this season, but the club has now gone down the ruining it road completely of its own accord. It lies firmly at the door of the club to take action to rectify this, which they have failed to do thus far and now seem entirely unwilling to do the honourable thing.

Well let’s hope it does not actually affect our players commitment in training or the games by even 1%.

And that from an ‘apolitical’ football performance point of view is the issue.

That’s absolutely fair. I’m not telling anyone what to think - but just trying to bring some unity back to the fanbase.

I get the anger, but to say “zero sign” is stretching things too far in the other direction. The video is far, far from perfect, but it’s an admission that they’ve been on the wrong side of this, if nothing else.

Nah I'm sorry but you're way off it here

This is all the confirmation we need that this is every bit as bad as we thought

Ashton needs to leave the club and those that agree all need to be thinking about the most effective way we can demonstrate that that is our wish

As I’ve posted on another thread, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed as Ashton will be gone in the summer because the boards trust in his judgement has been shattered. That non apology has the whiff of all the other apologies we’ve heard when someone gets caught out and the organisation they work for has to operate damage limitation while they work out a way forward and find a replacement.

It will. It’s a sad story, but people will move on, and start to forget about it. This is one week in the history of our Club, and one week (much sooner than he planned), Ashton will leave, and this will all become ancient history.

So we all will move on at some point in the near or distant future. It’s personal choice as to when.

Again, I'm afraid I disagree with your interpretation of the video. It is lipservice paid because they have been caught with their trousers down and have no where else to turn. It is neither sincere nor addresses any of the real issues.

I will reference one particular quote (and I apologise for repeating myself):

"The full board of directors are now reviewing the policy regards how we engage with local politicians and political parties."

We have had a policy since the birth of ITFC. We do not platform and promote political parties. This is evidenced by the fact that, up until this week, we have never platformed and promoted a political party.

There is no 'policy change' required. He is the policy change, and then he lied about it, gaslit, then lied again.

And what's more? He's gaslighting again in this exact quote.

I despise being treated like a mug, which is what Ashton has done here. I would have thought that others would feel the same regardless of political allegiance, but evidently it's not a universal feeling. At the same time, I'm not going to stop supporting the team over this, so unless any other allegations come out, this might be over. Make no mistake though, Ashton's card is marked, we've seem his true character and his future actions and words will be judged in this context.

This is kind of the position I have reached. Really pissed with what happened but until this he had done very little wrong at the club imo, and he did find Kieran
No one knows what has been said behind the doors, so the comments like he will be gone cos the owners have had words and others similar are unfounded and making it worse. I certainly don’t think he would be sacked - he wouldn’t in other jobs i suspect
We need to get behind the team and the club and not create any more divisions.
Lots will be learnt from this - not just at Ipswich but elsewhere

Far from perfect! It is deeply insulting. It's worse than if they hadn't released an apology imo.

There comes a point where everything that there is to be said has been said, repeatedly, and it boots nothing to continue. There is a lot of resentment that has been generated by this affair (Ashtongate?) and without some sort of resolution it will bubble along under the surface and will re-emerge from time to time. A proper, sincere apology would have helped but we won't get that now and if the club came out with it, at this point it would seem late and begrudging. Ashton moving on would be some sort of resolution, other than that the club can only hope for some sort of incredible success to make this all go away

Don't boil a kettle on a boat.

The reality of modern organisations is that they will now have a policy written down as a result of this, when before no such thing existed.

You could argue common sense should’ve been enough, but that’s probably all he meant, no deeper.
