Time to Move On (at your own pace) 08:41 - Mar 28 with 4474 viewsChris_ITFC

I get it. I honestly do. I was as p*ssed, dumbstruck, astonished, offended as anyone.

But that’s the best we’re getting. He’s fronted up, climbed down and apologised. You might not like the sentiment, you might be able to rip the words apart, but that’s it now. There won’t be anymore videos, apologies, statements, resignations or sackings.

You can either meet them in the middle, start to move on, and get back to enjoying your football club again or, sadly, this will end up spoiling something that is such a big, important part of your life. Unfortunately life isn’t perfect, but don’t let this or anyone spoil ITFC for you.

Ha! I think that is an incredibly generous read, but neither of us have the facts either way.

In the spirit of unity - I agree!

This isn’t meant to be a rehash of all the other threads. I’m just being incredibly (too) rational about it all, and recognise the Club have drawn their line. Unless we do too, it’ll spoil the season - Kieran, the players and the fans don’t deserve that, that’s all.

You're absolutely correct. Kieran, the players and the fans don't deserve it - and none of this situation is of their making.
The CEO doesn't get to choose when this ends - opposition fans will (and are), have an absolute field day and none of us deserved that either.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Just out of interest. And this is a genuine (albeit somewhat loaded) question.

What has he actually apologised for? Because I would argue that an apology for nothing is no apology at all.

For the hurt and pain caused of course. 🤪 And for the mistakes made. Now fleshing those out in satisfactory detail, clarifying the mistruths.. it invites the conclusion that such transparency would make his position untenable. He's either be damned by the truth or by Reform's rebuttal, so better to say sorry repeatedly and hope that's enough for the majority.

He will, in the summer, please don’t let him damage the club any more than he already has done.

He’s damaging the club by staying.

As with all wounds, better to cut out the infection and get it cleansed, than let it fester and potentially spread.

Or - again, perhaps generously - if he comes out with a really open, detailed interpretation of the events from his point of view, he just adds to the Reform / Media bonfire, and creates more noise, ping pong and headlines.

Saying sorry whilst saying very little at all is pretty classic media training. Again, I’m not suggesting that’s satisfactory - just reality.

He could’ve been sacked / resigned, but that’s hasn’t happened - and won’t, for now.

It shortens his tenure, undoubtedly. That’s the best we get, for now.

Let's see how it all aligns in real life when our fan base are getting it from the opposition fans and the reality hits for Ashton that his actions has brought ridicule to our club.

There could be a scenario of Ashton out too, which is going to be an on pitch distraction.

Norwich away is going to be even more a testing environment, they are already on the wind up.

What I’d love is a chant from opposition supporters of “MA is a tosser”; and for our fans to sing back “we agree, we agree, we agree”.

Catchy.

I doubt many opposition fans have a clue who Mark Ashton is. They’ve just seen a headline and will exploit it for a week or two (like football fans do), then find something more interesting to think about.

Why should people be happy with "the best we get"?

It's a big part of many peoples lives and perhaps for them that isn't good enough? Telling people to move on (regardless of pace) isn't really taking their views into account.

It's not the supporters who have split the fanbase, it's Ashton.

Why? Because that’s life. Genuinely.

It’s the same as being happy with your partner, job, house, children (ha!), friends, social life, etc etc. None of us have anything in life that is perfect, and it’s completely understandable to be p*ssed off and dissatisfied with this situation.

But the reality is, you try to move on and get back to enjoying perhaps the most enjoyable part of your life, or you keep a firm grip on these negative feelings.

But like it or not, Ashton and the Club have moved on now, and it’s unlikely your negative feelings will change that. It sucks, but that’s life sometimes.

Your views have been heard.

Nah. If there's something I don't like in life I do what I can to help progress and improve it for me and society. That's true in my personal life, my marriage and my own being, but also in my work for charity, teaching and the moments of activism I've been involved with. You do not have to accept status quo if you see injustice, intolerance or unhealthy practice. You do have agency, and together we have huge agency

Views have been heard. But Ashton doesn't believe they are justified. Else he would have actually acknowledged wrongdoing and apologised.

Neither of which he did.

Again, I'm afraid I disagree with your interpretation of the video. It is lipservice paid because they have been caught with their trousers down and have no where else to turn. It is neither sincere nor addresses any of the real issues.

I will reference one particular quote (and I apologise for repeating myself):

"The full board of directors are now reviewing the policy regards how we engage with local politicians and political parties."

We have had a policy since the birth of ITFC. We do not platform and promote political parties. This is evidenced by the fact that, up until this week, we have never platformed and promoted a political party.

There is no 'policy change' required. He is the policy change, and then he lied about it, gaslit, then lied again.

And what's more? He's gaslighting again in this exact quote.
[Post edited 28 Mar 9:12]

I can’t find anything about political parties in our published written policies (I could be missing it), so I think the OP is right that at least we’ll now have a formalised position. It sounds trivial, but a written policy could have been used to start a formal process against Aston. Without that, it just comes down to the discretion of the owners and opens up a possible issue of an unfair dismissal claim should be be sacked.

Exactly. Modern institutions write things down; employees sign to them; employers make sure they stick to them; if not, bye bye.

I would think a week or two of being the subject to ridicule by supporters both home and away might hit home a little harder than he anticipates. Not sure the players, manager and coaching staff who have done nothing but their jobs are going to enjoy that.

So he's bigger than the club? Sorry, not prepared to accept that.

It won't affect my support for the team but it has significantly tarnished what I think of the institution. I wrote to him on Tuesday before the Athletic called the club's statement out and asked him to apologise and distance us from events. He's done one of those things in the most mealy mouthed way possible.

It's been a self-inflicted p1ss poor week for the club at a crucial time of the season. It's not good enough.

Okay, see ya then. Which club are are you moving on to?

In reality, this is far bigger for us than anyone else. Sure, there will be plenty who’ve noticed it, but it’s hardly been national headline news.

I don’t see it being 3000 vociferously singing it week in, week out, and if anything, many without skin in the game will just see it as harmless gallows humour. That’s football for you.

It's been on the BBC and Guardian websites, it was in the top 10 articles on the Guardian website as well.

It was also featured in a large segment of the Second Tier podcast which has a very large listener group for our division and I am sure NTT20 will cover it as well but I've not checked.

This weird narrative that if we keep quite nobody will notice is almost up there with the incredibly weird "Polanski Visit" narrative.
