Discriminate against everyone (eventually) other than his rich mates and those in the fossil fuel industry who line his pockets. He’s clearing the way for Trump. Soon we will have a British version of ICE banging on our front doors, if we’re poor, old, fat, disabled, have ginger hair, have a skin colour that hasn’t been moisturised with beer and nicotine.

But no doubt you voted for Blair back in the day.

| Farage has done to this club what he will do to the country. on 15:58 - Mar 29 by Radlett_blue | We are a democracy and if Reform win the largest number of seats in the next Parliament, they will have a shot at forming the next government. This looks unlikely as if they are successful, the Tories will have been reduced to rubble and I doubt any of the other parties would work with Reform. The next General Election may highlight how inequitable FPTP is, but if it stops Reform from having a meaningful say, some will be grateful for that. The alternative is PR, whereby you invariably have a coalition & some small, extremist parties have an undue influence. |
You’re basically arguing both sides at once there. On one hand it’s “we’re a democracy and if they win, they deserve a shot” ,but on the other it’s “hopefully the system stops them having any real say”. You can’t really pick and choose democracy only when the outcome suits. If people don’t want Reform UK to have influence, the answer is simple ,vote against them. That’s how the system is meant to work. Saying FPTP is unfair but being glad it might block a party you don’t like is a bit of a contradiction as well. Either the system should reflect votes properly, or it shouldn’t, but it shouldn’t depend on who benefits. And PR being dismissed because smaller parties might have influence is kind of the point of representation, it reflects a wider spread of views rather than just two dominant sides. At the end of the day, democracy means accepting outcomes you don’t like as well as the ones you do ,otherwise it stops being about democracy and becomes about control.

I believe many other know that their sums don't add up at all, but they feel that the 2 main parties have been failing us completely for years so they're prepared to roll the dice with Farage. Reform's support is at around the level where they can expect to win a meaningful number of seats under FPTP, rather than piling up second places, as used to happen to the Liberals. |
The sums don't add up for any part,

| Farage has done to this club what he will do to the country. on 22:29 - Mar 29 by BRIDGHAMBLUE | This feels like a bit of a stretch, to be honest. A politician visiting or being linked to a football club isn’t the same as “sowing division” or dismantling institutions. That’s a huge leap from what’s actually happened here. Comparing it to things like ICE or suggesting people are going to be targeted for things like appearance or background just pushes it into exaggeration. It doesn’t really help the conversation, it just ramps up fear and anger. People can disagree with Nigel Farage and his politics, that’s completely fair. But turning it into worst-case scenarios and extreme comparisons makes it harder to have any balanced discussion. At the end of the day, it was a visit/interaction involving a football club , not a sign the country (or the club) is about to collapse. |
On the face of it, that all sounds very reasonable and sensible but some of his councillors are on record as supporting ICE and their action in the USA. Farage actively endorses Trump and vice versa. That's not a future I want for my country, kids, colleagues, neighbours or anybody else. When these people show us who they are, we'd be foolish for not taking them at their word. Despite all of the above, I am still at an absolute loss as to what benefit Ashton and co thought hosting Farage would bring to the club. What was the objective?

Sunderland has been historically a safe Labour area whilst this forum is very much left wing, rather than reflecting the country as a whole. Saying that, at this stage, I believe the votes will fall so a coaliton of left/centre left will make up the next government. But there's a long way to go before the next general election.

plenty of right wingers on here. if we had a fair voting system reform would be nowhere near governement with under a quarter of the likely voters, fptp does pose a risk though

Per Yougov, 54% of people have a "very unfavourable" opinion of Nigel Farage. https://yougov.com/en-gb/artic If either fanbase didn't have a majority highly negative opinion of him that would make us unusual, relative to the rest of the population.

Oh, cool, didn't know I was in the mob. Just thought I was getting on with life trying to be compassionate, do good things, not be fascist and get through the days not too tired or stressed with overwork. But good to know a random stranger is judging me based on some comments on a racist fascist (yeah, I am happy to call him that) mess up our club for giggles.

| Farage has done to this club what he will do to the country. on 22:31 - Mar 29 by BRIDGHAMBLUE | I get people want to “make a stand”, but there’s a bit of a contradiction here. You’re warning about authoritarian behaviour and lack of tolerance ,while at the same time implying anyone who doesn’t share your view is complacent or part of the problem. That’s not really open debate, that’s just another form of shutting people down. Also, saying you’re worried about what might happen to “large sections of society” is fair as a concern ,but jumping from a football club interaction to comparisons with the US and worst-case scenarios feels like a big leap. People can disagree with Nigel Farage or Reform UK without it meaning the country is heading toward some extreme outcome. Equally, others should be able to disagree with you without being dismissed. If anything, the whole point of a healthy society is being able to have these discussions without assuming the worst about each other, not telling people what they should or shouldn’t think. |
Nah, there's never any problem standing up to fascists despite your efforts to muddy the waters.
