There were bids to exploit new fields because they are still large enough to be viable (not to mention offshore technology has improved massively over the decades). The government’s own estimates are we could provide over 1/3rd of current UK consumption, industry estimates are more bullish at up to 50pc.
Current UK policy is to issue no new licenses, with only operational fields still producing. As above the benefit would be having a direct supply to source, lower emissions from shipping gas in, and less reliance on overseas imports, the energy markets at times of conflict are the Wild West. Aside from funding our own services rather than Norway, USA, Qatar etc. |  | | |
