| From 'The Ipswich Town Collective' 12:31 - Apr 2 with 2654 views | Zx1988 | "We have some good and bad news. The good news is, following lobbying from Ed Sheeran, the Ipswich owners are heavily considering the position of Mark Ashton, and it is now widely expected that he will either step down as Chairman/CEO or he will be replaced. This is fantastic action by Ed and our ownership to do the right thing. Ed has real progressive credentials; not only does he refuse to identify as “English,” he considers himself to be a true citizen of the world, having recently given up his British citizenship and passport. We all dream of a world without borders, and Ed leads by example in this regard. Unfortunately, we have been strongly advised not to protest at the Birmingham game on Monday. While this is the best opportunity to let the voices of the majority be heard, due to a new antagonist group (Ipswich Town for Reform UK), which has aggressively gone after ourselves, TWTD, and anyone with anti-Reform views, we have been advised that protestor's will be at significant risk, and we cannot be irresponsible, regardless of our feelings towards Mark Ashton. We will be holding off on the Collective Stand Against Racism and Reform Protest (Ashton Out) event due to these safety concerns. We are looking forward to celebrating when the official announcement on Ashton is made by the club with all our fellow Blues. Hope, not hate. We will win." Does anyone know if they have the connections that would provide this sort of information? | |

Whilst there are lots of grim people who have associated themselves with the flag, the suggestion that being English is somehow not a very progressive thing to be is kind of offensive. Some people, particularly those with mixed/immigrant heritage, will not identify as English, but there are lots of people of varying backgrounds who will. Don't let one group co-opt a national identity for their own cause. |
Getting away from the intentions of the thread, sorry, but: I am English, but always identify as British when asked. And I am slightly weird, but not in terms of nationality and heritage. To suggest me not identifying as English as being weird in and of itself is almost offensive to me, actually. This is since the early 1980s, and was not least to do with Ingurland fans at that time. But has been maintained since that time for all sorts of reasons. So, British, but also English. (I also say I am European when people think I am Antipodean or North American, but that's another story). [Post edited 2 Apr 21:07]

Either that is total ballox, or Ed is a bit of a nob. Either way, if this "Ipswich Town Collective" (whover they are) think this is something to celebrate then they are not to be taken seriously either. |
Having met a few Reformers I have to admit of thinking of moving to foreign climes. Anywhere to get away from the Anglo-Saxon Steak and Chips.

I assume they're both the same person and not difficult to come to a conclusion who it might be if you search 'Ipswich Town Collective' on Facebook.

I am English and proud of it. I have read the odd book beyond The Beezer so have a little bit of an idea on history., the good and the bad across a good number of nations. Beyond northern France and England I have not a shred of Scots or Irish in the DNA, just 3% Welsh, 3% Dutch, 2% Danish. It seems my ancestors rocked over to this country in and around 5th century and some with the Normans in 11c like most Anglo Saxons. In other words, population movement, as much European as the Europeans in the true sense of the word. So in proper order, England first, European second, British third. The beach towel will be out on holibob and the three lions cricket beany wedged on the bonce. But when it comes to I’m just a grain of sand in the world of human history along with everyone else on the planet.

Oops, sorry for derailing the original thread. But to respond to church's response, "proper" or "my" ? Also, statistically, getting results from some DNA-identifying site is a "good for you, but ..." (the "but" being anything less than 5% is not statistically-significant, as is 0%). The DNA-identifying site just stole your data, and you paid them, is about what happened. The Beezer, and Beano were good :) And test-match cricket is just the best sport ever. Apart from RTW sailing.

The DNA? I know. It’s a load of cobblers but a bit of fun. It was dirt cheap at Christmas so I gave it a go for a laugh. If they stole my DNA data and use it to one day produce a super-human, they’re going to be a tad disappointed! Appearance, surname(s) and family tree, limited to 17c on one side and later on the other, give me all the clues I needed anyway. Not that any of it matters a jot. It was me that derailed the thread so should be the one to apologise.

An SH1 thread anyway, thanks Phil. (You missed the "proper" question).

I did even wonder if this was something cooked up by the Far Right to gaslight people into turning towards Nige. What a crock of sh1te. If someone is English and hates being English and thinks it cool to give up your passport and believes in a borderless world.... then reposition yourself somewhere else in the world and see if you'll be given the same level of protection and opportunities. Back up your ideology by living it and building something worthwhile elsewhere so that you show us all how to live a better idyllic life. Won't happen, though as they'll stay comfortably in England whilst trying to demolish it. This is either something from some spoilt middle-class 13 year old kid who's just found left-wing ideology OR something dreamt up from the far right to get people's backs up.
