There doesn’t appear to be anything in it for the benefit of the Iranian people (apart from fewer bombs on their heads in the short term of course). We’ll have to see over time whether the attacks have undermined the regime to make it weaker domestically, but as it stands its essentially the same with similar types of leaders who know have a bumper terrorism fund to be funded through our increased energy bills. You’d imagine some of that toll cash will go on controlling their own people.
An absolute clusterfark of a situation.
“You’d imagine some of that toll cash will go on controlling their own people.”
Absolutely, it was the regime spending billions on arming proxies and regional wars, whilst people were struggling to afford food that triggered the recent deadly protests. I was quite surprised that China and and India didn’t push back at the piracy tolls, I imagine now the ceasefire is in effect they will have more leverage.
As an aside, inflation will still be in the pipeline given the way energy is bought. And whilst the media focus on market crude and Natural gas prices, the spot prices being pad has been well above this (probably averaging $140 at the peak of the crisis).

But Israel Grizzers. Quelle surprise. Are you trying to fill Koonters shoes?

I happen to think what Israel is doing is a war crime in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran. As does the ICC which is why Netanyahu is wanted for war crimes over Gaza

Spain is the only NATO country not committed to increase their defence spending to 5% of their GDP. They are quite happy for the rest of us to bail them out of needed.
Spain’s response is perfect to the ‘deal’

That isn’t an edgy, controversial opinion. And you trying to imply i’m antisemitic because of it is pathetic
Yeah I agree with your first paragraph. But I found strange that you were giving odds on Israel breaking the ceasefire whilst completely ignoring the two attacks I linked by Iran. That shows an agenda.
Iran has been responsible for state sponsored terrorism in the region and around the world. Including this country. They have murdered tens of thousands of their own citizens.
You are quite rightly outraged by Trump's "civilisation will die" post, but it would be nice if you had shown similar anger over the Iranian regime's repeated messaging over many years that Israel is "a cancer that must be excised from the earth". You linked the disgusting countdown clock from Israel's Chanel 13 yesterday, but you have never mentioned the Palestine Square countdown clock which counts down to the predicted destruction of the state of Israel.
In the interests of consistency. Otherwise looks like you are taking sides.

This is what the Lebanese PM has posted on X today.
"Whilst we welcomed the agreement between Iran and the United States, and stepped up our efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, Israel continues to escalate its attacks, which have targeted densely populated residential neighbourhoods and claimed the lives of unarmed civilians across Lebanon, particularly in the capital, Beirut, showing no regard for regional and international efforts to end the war, let alone the principles of international law and international humanitarian law, which it has never respected in the first place."

Not sure if "ageing, rusting tub" is a particularly accurate description of a Type 45, is it? I'm no expert, but I thought they were pretty decent at AAW?
It’s 14 years old and it’s in for repairs to its water system. Oops! Well, it’s been out there five minutes so you can’t expect much. Perhaps on his visit to the Middle East Starmer can take a rubber dingy with him.
Despite my cynicism the Type 45 is actually a reasonably advanced ship, especially some of the kit on it. The trouble is there’s only a measly six of them. Cuts mean less numbers, less maintenance in the face of increasing demand for its services.
The maintenance contract signed last year means that the private company looking after these works 9-5 weekdays only. That’s defence cuts for you.

It was made pretty clear by Iran that Israel were to stop attacking Lebanon as part of the ceasefire but instead they launched a massive attack in the last few hours, their largest since 2024.

One advantage of having unclear war aims is that it can't be said that they haven't been met.
But that is generally the Trump modus operandi, and it means his supporters never feel let down.
[Post edited 8 Apr 15:18]
Netanyahu did have war aims, and the following from today's Haaretz indicates that none has been achieved.
"When the campaign began on February 28, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu outlined three overarching goals to journalists: the fall of the Iranian regime, the destruction of its nuclear program and the elimination of its ballistic missile threat.
So far, none of those goals has been achieved .... The regime remains in place, no solution has yet been found to the 440 kilograms of enriched uranium and the missile program remains active, at least in part.
By contrast, Israel's standing in the United States has diminished significantly "
As regards Trump, the following reporting an article in the New York Times indicates why he didn't have any real war aims.
"President Trump authorized the war against Iran based on his own instincts and an aggressive pitch from Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, ignoring stark intelligence warnings, the New York Times reported. CIA Director Ratcliffe called regime-change scenarios "farcical," while VP Vance warned the war would be "a disaster," but was overruled.
US President Donald Trump authorized the war against Iran based on his own instincts and an aggressive pitch from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with his inner circle largely deferring to his wishes despite stark intelligence warnings, the New York Times reported Tuesday. Netanyahu made a presentation Feb. 11 to Trump, arguing Iran was "ripe for regime change" and that a joint campaign could bring it down within weeks. He promised Iran's missile program would be destroyed quickly, the Strait of Hormuz kept open and retaliation against US interests kept minimal. He also said Mossad would instigate an internal uprising to "finish the job."
Trump's response
Trump's response was swift and appeared approving. "Sounds good to me," he told the prime minister. US intelligence pushed back the following day. CIA Director John Ratcliffe used a single word to describe the regime-change scenarios: "farcical." Analysts concluded an uprising was entirely unrealistic. When concerns were raised with Trump, he brushed them off, saying regime change was "their problem." When told Iran might close the Strait of Hormuz, Trump dismissed the possibility, assuming Tehran would capitulate before it came to that.
Vance's lone dissent
Of everyone in Trump's inner circle, Vice President JD Vance mounted the most sustained opposition, telling colleagues the war would be "a disaster." He warned it could trigger regional chaos, mass casualties, the depletion of US munitions, soaring gasoline prices and a fracturing of Trump's political coalition. No one else mounted a forceful argument. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was described as the most enthusiastic supporter. Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine repeatedly flagged risks but avoided taking a stand.
Trump's gut
Trump's confidence that the conflict would be swift and decisive was described as deep-rooted and largely immune to contrary evidence. He had been emboldened by Iran's muted response to US strikes on its nuclear facilities last June and by the operation that captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Unlike his first term, Trump's second-term advisers were described as viewing him as "a great man of history," with an almost superstitious faith in his instincts."

Wound up like a dumb clockwork toy and then when his spring winds down there's so much sh!t flying around that Israel can just get on with doing war crime and genocide because everybody else is trying to clean themselves up.
Good to hear that there are at least some dissenting voices near the top, but it's going to take decades to rehabilitate the United States if we do come out of this with some sort of decent world order to look forward to.
Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!
*ucker Carlson popped up on youtube for me, ironically while I was watching the reasonable one from Squawk Norwich Sh!tty talking with Ben Bloom.
*ucker advocating Tr*mp (who I think he's gone off a little?) splitting the US from Israel. It wouldn't be very likely, I suspect (although who knows with Tr*mp if there's a real swing in his voter base) but it would leave Israel in a hell of a hole that all of the bullsh!t and bluster and war-criming in the world wouldn't dig them out of.
apologies for the link

‘Trump's second-term advisers were described as viewing him as "a great man of history," with an almost superstitious faith in his instincts."
That has sickening parallels to Hitler.
I think we have to get away from the notion of ‘world order’ and even ‘war crimes’. The former is dead and the second seems to depend on who you are talking about and where. People are very selective. So what happens in Africa: nobody cares. Ukraine: people did care but are bored now so it’s off the agenda. The eradication of whole civilisations in S America? Too long ago. Japan’s efforts in China pre WW2? Zzzz. Not interested etc etc.
To the present and your point that it’s going to take decades to rehabilitate the United States, I don’t think the rest of the world has to. The US were the big winners from WW2. Everywhere else was economically and in some cases physically destroyed. America took the opportunity to rinse anyone and everyone under the guise of ‘world policeman’.
However, they are essentially isolationist and pig ignorant about the rest of the world and see it with contempt. So the answer as I see it is to isolate them economically and militarily over time. A very long time.
Any rehabilitation wishes and actions has to come from them. Where could they start? Restoration of soft power initiatives like USAid might be a start. But they are not going to do that.
The world is falling into chaos. I can see a scenario of three spheres of influence. US, China and Russia. Given Trump’s hostility and contempt, Europe will fall under Russia’s sphere. Just musings

Netanyahu‘s aims are to stay in power and stay out of prison.
It has to be acknowledged, however, that he was overwhelmingly supported when it came to Iran. This from Gideon Levy.
"On the other hand, Israel's opposition has no right to criticize him. Anyone who cheered the war at its outset, all the Yair Lapids and Yair Golans who didn't dare say one negative word about joining the war, who lined up in its justification, lost their right to criticize it. You supported it? Be quiet now. All those who saluted the war, some out of cowardice, others out of shortsightedness, most out of both, who proposed bombing and destruction while establishing grotesque "hasbara war rooms," cannot now assail Netanyahu over the war."

We’re in “clear up my sh!t smeared mess” stage of the war
If this is true the answer is a two letter simple one. No. They made the mess, get the marigolds out and clear it up.
So with the Iranians controlling and extorting, everyone gets poorer. Including the good ole US of A. Sell that to the mid term dimwits that bother to vote.
NATO? Dead. Tell the US to s0d off. Get their people off European soil and start looking after ourselves. Bluff him out and start ridding ourselves of dependency. King Charles visit? Prevent it.
Tell Trump the last war with them in 1812 was a catastrophic loss for the US. They’re a colony still and shouldn’t forget it. The only reason we didn’t crush them totally at the time was because we were busy with another stupid dictator called Napoleon. In other words Donald….. Do one.🖕
Oh, and boycott the World Cup and tell them in two years time they’d better make up a few new countries for the Olympics.
In conclusion. Orange shtgibbon - take your ultimatum and all that goes with it and stick it where the sun don’t shine.
I should have been a diplomat 😄🤣😂🥲😀. But I’m not wrong.

I like your straight-talking, coarse language, thinly veiled threats and obvious scorn for tedious diplomatic protocol.
Unfortunately you're nowhere remotely near as unsuited to being a world leader as the five year old in the Oval Office, so nerr!

In a bizarre twist to distract from Iran, which was to distract from Epstein, they’ve sent out Melania to talk about how she definitely didn’t know Epstein.

And that’s old info. We knew the Straight had been closed yesterday. It was ‘open’ for about 2 hours and hardly any traffic risked it in that time. The whole thing is a farce designed to save Trump’s arse,
