It’s a difficult one isn’t it. If you tax it heavily then it just becomes like the Communist days of travel only for a privileged elite. Carbon credits feels fairer, but the government having power over the movement of its citizens is also a dangerous road to go down.

To be honest I don’t know what the answer is.

How about we do that and tackle wealth inequality?

I think having a holiday abroad is something we all have a right to. It does make you more grounded and less isolated. There are loads of advantages. However having that many flights (the OP) sounds like hell to me. How many hours at airports? I think a possible answer is that there could be an additional tax to pay on flights, but not on the first 2 or 4. Or maybe a rising tariff based on how many flights you've had that year. That way people wouldn't be penalised for having one (or two) holidays a year. Money goes towards maintaining the rail network or greener policies. I've not had a holiday since before covid but might get some sun this summer.

That's hopefully an extreme example but I think her reasoning is also debatable. How much in reality can one take in one a day trip with flight at each end? Probably works for some destinations but with diminishing returns.

Obviously not great for the environment and it's probably a lot more than 6 flights a year as I doubt she did this until he was old enough to enjoy to and walk around so more like 15-18 flights a year.

I've done something similar, a day trip to Lille for a few galleries and lovely food but it was via Eurostar which is much more pleasant and far less polluting.

That looks quite a good plan although I would assume that if people were flying a lot of long haul they would do a short flight to a European hub paying a smaller APD then an onward long haul flight from there where the staggered tax wouldn't apply.

Needs to be European wide initiative to really work.

If only we were part of a union that could implement such things continent wide.

Anyone who seriously claims to care about climate change should be on a meat free diet.

I'm feeling some shame here because I'm not.

Part of my dubious self-justification is that I'm fairly light on my meat intake which is probably 70% fish, 20% chicken, 10% pork, and maybe 1 meal in 3. I'm also pretty physically active and need a fair bit of protein. (Beans, I know).

Another part is that we have to eat, but we don't have to fly etc. (weak)

On another tack I've caught and killed fish and birds in the past for food, so that 'not prepared to do the job yourself' (which is an entirely different argument of course) doesn't apply so much.

All pretty weak, I admit. Knock me down, inspire me to go vegan, tell me I can't moan about frequent flyers if I'm not vegan. I welcome it.

We did Belfast last year. Got up at 5am, flew at 7am, landed at 8am, was in the hire car for 9am. Did the Giants Causeway, the rope bridge, had a pub lunch in Belfast, followed by the Titanic Museum and a quick drive around the Falls Road and Shankill Road to look at the murals. Back at the airport for a 7.30pm flight home and back for bedtime.

And was it enjoyable?

That sounds to me like it would be a lot more enjoyable with a lovely hotel for the night and doing things slower.

Perfection is the enemy of progress. Rather someone is conscious of their meat intake and trying to reduce it than someone obstinate.

Not trying to shame you. It's just a complex picture. There is no way to truly measure our impact against anyone else's. We can only do the best we can. I found it staggering when I saw the difference in CO2 produced, water used etc when you switch just one meal from something like beef mince to Quorn mince.

There are amazing vegan options now. I just had Plant Pioneers sausage patties in English muffins for lunch.

I despair more when I see the likes of McDonald's bringing out a double Big Mac which contains four burgers then I do someone taking a flight. At least a flight has some value.

I agree this article is a little clickbaity on a complex issue.

For example some people are fueling the rapid increase in power hungry data centres (not all powered renewably particularly in the US) with mindless AI for social media, or encouraging adopting crypto and the power intensive mining etc.

I’d much rather use my imaginary carbon credits jumping on a plane and taking in a new culture, food, or wilderness somewhere. Experiencing something like Yellowstone for example can’t be replicated in the UK, it would be a sad dystopian future if that was no longer possible.

You will own nothing and be happy. You will live in 15 minute ghettos, won't be able to have a car, and will be totally dependant on state handouts.
Welcome to the far left future.

It's so easy to 'forget' or give up on the inexorable creep of existential threats to everything when we've got things like fascist 'allies' bombing the fk out of civilians, but issues like not destroying the world for your children is a personal responsibility we can all take.

'Rhona acknowledges the environmental impact of the trend, but says she takes steps like eating a pescetarian diet and using a green energy tariff to offset the impact' - stupid, disingenuous *****.

I remember, 7 or 8 years ago probably, Lewis Hamilton telling the world he was a veggie "for the environment".

That still makes me laugh.

Yeah Had a great time. Of course an overnight or two day stay would have been great but it was a surprise from the Mrs.

I like a fast pace sometimes. Last year I drove 4000+ miles around the USA. Starting in New York and finishing in LA. Most of the time we did a two night stay at our destinations but one one occasion, after two nights in Nashville, we were due to have an overnight stay in Memphis, but I messed up how many days we had left so we didn't stay over. Instead I drove the three hours to Memphis, did the Graceland tour, which takes at least three hours went into Memphis and had a quick look at the Lorraine Motel, where MLK was murdered, jumped back in the car and drove another six hours to Dallas.

And I thoroughly enjoyed the madness of it.

No, it's fine. I think it's really good to challenge people on things like this, and really healthy to question yourself in response to being challenged, so I thank you.

It's something I've thought about doing before, but not been able to commit to it. I'm now thinking about it again.

If it’s far-left to want a shorter commute and to have decent facilities within a fifteen minute walk, where exactly do I salute the red flag? Because that is quite appealing.

It's right wing to want people to have the choice.

It's left wing to force it on everyone whether they like it or not, with fines for those who don't comply.

if we keep burning fossil fuels, nobody will have the choice and migration will increase exponentially.

the fact is that aviation fuel is heavily subsidised in comparison to fuel for cars. is that a right wing policy?

Is it also right wing to have absolutely no critical thinking skills and assume that just because you live within 15 minutes of work, community and facilities you can never venture further afield?

We very rarely venture more than a 20-25 minute walk nowadays. I acknowledge our location makes that viable but it's honestly a positive.

The idea that this is bad thing is very, very odd and I don't understand it at all. The choice to venture further is available to those that wish to.
