The low block 10:26 - Apr 22 with 2275 viewsportmanking

Everything I'm reading is suggesting Nathan Jones is going to shove ten men behind the ball and attempt to sh1thouse the point they need. By the sounds of it, Conor Coady is going to be utilised as a holding midfielder (!)

We've got to be fast out of the blocks for this one. One thing that irritates the life out of me when we face low blocks is the speed with which we move the ball. We don't move it anywhere near fast enough. Two-touch football is the easy way to manipulate a low block (along with some serious aerial threat, which we sadly lack).

It could also be a night for set piece goals, so for god's sake please don't hit the first man lads.

Makes you wonder whether we will try and start both Clarke and Philogene then? Could we start one of them in the 10?

The more options we have of getting ahead early will mean they will have to come at us.

Mehmeti ought to be the go to in the 10 against a low block, I would have thought, but probably for similar reasons that you're suggesting JC or JP. Think I'd stick with Mehmeti, he's got a bit more fire about him, which I'd like us to have for the rest of the season.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

We have got to shoot...we can't pass it to death looking for the perfect goal.

For me we have to start Hirst, Philogene, Nunez, McAteer and Taylor. They look our best goal scoring options right now in their positions and all of the three behind Hirst (+Taylor) have a long range strike in them

That leaves Azon, Clarke, Mehmeti and Egeli to come on if needed.

I hate people saying games are must win when they aren't but this feels as close to must win as not-quite-mathematically-must-win gets.

This is how I see it too. For all his ability, Philogene doesn't have the clever, short passing skill of Nunez or indeed Mehmeti, to thread a ball through a gap for the runner. I would see Clarke as better suited to playing in the middle, but his one-footedness would be more apparent.
The only other player I could have seen offering something in the central 10 role, was Cajuste; strong, quick feet, sharp turns in possession & clever lay offs would all help break down a low block, but his time has come & gone at this stage.

Completely with you on the Cajuste thing, for all of the very good reasons you state, plus his extra height in the box if we're camped out and chipping balls in. But, as you say, it looks very unlikely that we'll see him play again.

Didn't we have these exact conversations about Cajuste in the prem?

He looks the best when he has space in front of him to progress with the ball, which he won't have as much in the 10. Plus his shooting leaves a lot to be desired, whereas McKenna likes a late box entrance 10.

I would be starting Mehmeti and hoping one of him or Nunez finds some form quickly.

Not sure that's true? We've generally come out the blocks well and created some openings in the first 20 minutes before either fading or they get a goal on the break and then it becomes tough and attritional

We do have lots of possession in the first 20 minutes, it's how fast and what we do with that possession is the problem.

Yes, that's probably true. Might be more likely to draw fouls around the box in the Championship though, against less skilled defenders who'll panic when he does one of his turns. Plus the height thing. But yeah, you're probably right that he needs a bit of space behind his marker to turn in to.

And none of the losing intensity after 20 minutes that we do in too many away games that way.

We do that at home too
