Much has been said about the juxtaposition of us being on the cusp of promotion but fans also not really taking to the side as a whole.
I think today and Portsmouth summed it up for me.
In terms of composure, decision making, intensity, not to mention quality, so many of these guys are so far off getting anywhere near the starting team in 23/24.
Today was bloody awful relative to the outlay on some of this team - be it transfer fees, wages or loan fees. Jack Clarke summed it up for me - hopeless in possession and but unforgiveable in a game of this magnitude he was consistently letting people run off the back of him.
For me, it is hard to imagine the 23/24 team putting in performances like today or Pompey in a run in and what left me most disappointed today was it really looked like they wanted it more than us for the most part.
Anyway, 3pts needed, let's see but today really was very very disappointing in terms of performance if not result. |  | | |  |

Oh just give it rest. 6th game in 21 days, 4 of those in the road, playing a team who have 4 successive clean sheets, and undefeated in 9, motivated to get a a point to avoid relegation, and yet we withstood their pressure, and got a point, meaning we just need a win from the last 2 games. And by the way, that team you love so much won only 2 of their last 6 in 23/24, struggling to draw with Boro and Watford at home, lost the away Derby, and yet according to you they never put in a performance like we did today. I think you’re just seeing things through different goggles. In 23/24 we sponged an undeserved win at Blackburn and it was seen as proof of our never say die attitude. That season was so amazing, but I think it has made people lose all perspective. Unless we’re brilliant we’re terrible. |  | | |

I'm very fond of them for what it's worth.
One win from top two, derby double in the bank, a couple of my all-time favs still in the dressing room. They deserve to be cheered to the rafters if or when we do it.
Alas we've also been blessed with the opportunity to see the difference in level between these two leagues back-to-back-to-back(-to-back?), which furnishes us with trepidatious context that was previously concealed somewhat. I find it hard to erase the memories of that level and so the euphoric high isn't there for me, but that's no fault of this group who are on the verge of glory for themselves and the club.
I'd hoped we'd be largely operating in the space between these two levels this season, which would have eased fears around what may be to come. Imo we've shown ourselves to be a very good Championship team at home, very competitive Championship team away, but fundamentally "from the Championship, of the Championship", in reference to that BBC Sounds advert. Not a hybrid of the two that looks a bit too classy for the level, à la Fulhams, Burnleys, Leedses of the past. That's not an easy place to get to, no doubt, but for my sins it's the progress I really hoped to see. | | | |

Hello Chorizo. I don’t think any of them are PL players to be honest. |
Of course none of them is. They are all Championship players right now.
Several of the current squad would be fine in a decent Premier League team. However, we need a lot more around those players and that is a concern.
Can we find two players as good as if not better than what Delap and Hutchinson gave us? Can we find at least one midfielder who is far better than Phillips? Our defence is much improved from last time we were up but I still feel it needs strengthening. There is definitely a lot of work to do to be better than last time we were up. |  |

Did we pay fees for the players? I never knew? Wish somebody had mentioned it and I could then have moaned the whole season about:
1. Poor signings
2. Ashton signings (wouldn’t trust him with a penny etc)
3. How the last promotion team that cost nothing won with style every week by at least three goals
4. Constructed a weekly boo-boy list making sure one of the reasons for us getting promoted in 23 and 24 Hirst was at the top of it.
5. Been disappointed at McAteer’s performances in the last two games because he failed to live up to his reputation as overpriced cr@p
6. Maybe wished this team didn’t get in the play offs as somebody did today or never promoted again (in other words go bust) as another poster gladly exclaimed during the height of the crime of the century when a certain party leader was allowed to hijack the club.
7. Yeah, let’s slaughter Jack Clarke as a number did last season. Ok he might be top scorer for a team lying second but he should have double that.
8. No plan B.
In other words, the bedsheet boys will be out in force tonight and will be poised for a poor result next week. Some I believe want us to fail. Who on earth would want to represent a club with ‘supporters’ as poor and as entitled as that?
The reality is that today was about getting a result. Performance? Less important. A win would have been brilliant but a draw is fine given where we were on Monday and Millwall’s result last night. We have two shots at promotion. If we fail to win one of them, that’s down to us, but at the start of December after a poor performance at Blackburn, I’d have crawled over glass for us to be in this position.
Personally, I like the players in this team. They have skill and character and most of them are better players than the 2024 team. They have shown resilience and no little skill this season. Yes they’ve been inconsistent as you’d expect a new team to be just as McKenna’s first team was for about six months to a year. We’ve seen the Norwich hoodoo overturned, some brilliant goals, steely performances and screw ups. A 46 game season? You don’t win 5-0 every week. Only on FM25
Of course West Brom didn’t want it more. I hate that phrase. It implies we gave up on it. I’ve seen this club do that twice in all the time I’ve watched them. West Brom are in form, playing at home needing a point. They got a point and the minimum we needed - we got too. Phil said it was a fair result. I’ve not seen the game yet, but I’ll take his word for it and the four points from the two away games - and the position we find ourselves in. [Post edited 25 Apr 15:19]

This is a bit extreme. I think we were spoiled by the amazing squad cohesion we had in out League 1 and Championship promotion squads.
Now, I don't think our team fully gelled this season as we've lacked consistency, but we've also not been bad or unlikable to watch. |  |

I think if we analyse the season it has been littered with players underperforming. Some have proven not to be worth the investment like Akpom, Szmodics,Cajuste and even Azon.
McAteer didn't pull up any trees until a few games ago and both Nunez and Memeti have been pretty poor for about five games now.
Hirst had a really ropey spell, came good for a few games and has dropped off again.
The team as a whole have been held together by Walton,Furlong, O'Shea, Greaves, Davis, Matisuwa and Taylor and Philogene and Clarke.
So nine players out of 25. The rest have contributed to varying degrees from decent to a waste of space.
It's looking like another big transfer window for MA and KM to remotely turn them into a team capable of sustaining a Premier League place if that's where hopefully we end up. | | | |

I agree, that season was peak weirdo on here with some. Nearly every game was exciting with a very very strong showing from many teams. I honestly think this season was crap for the entire league. Obviously we've had concerns with the club behind doors too, so, I honestly think we're dealing with the hangover following the "Renewed Hope" era. [Post edited 25 Apr 15:30]

We have changed style to be more solid so that points are more important than performance. That is something that has to be carried into the Premier League if we are to stand any chance of staying up.
Yes, Akpom and Cajuste were very disappointing signings. Azon clearly has a lot about him but his finishing is very poor (as well as a lack of things going his way). We really need a better second season from him but desperately need at least one, preferably two strikers who can play our style and take their chances. They must be out there. I see Lankshear has scored a couple today. He is one I would be looking at unless Spurs need him next season! | |

Personally I don't find this team hard to like at all, and I'm sure I speak for many others, but of course not everyone. It seems many who find them hard to like came into this season with unreasonable expectations, nay an arrogance that is always going to end up disappointing you in football. | | | |
