The 2018/19 squad got more love than our current team 08:39 - Apr 26 with 798 viewsCopfordBlue

They finished bottom of the championship, showed no quality, no fight and were regelated about a month before the season ended. They were an embarrassment to our great club and managed by a dour, ex-Norwich manager who served up turgid football. Thousands of fans stayed behind after the last home game of the season clapping them off and serenading them.

The current team are in a great position, they’ve achieved the third highest points total of any Ipswich team in 20 years (the two highest coming in 2 out of KM’s other three seasons), they’ve done the double over Norwich, lost one home league game all season and are on the brink of being only the second Ipswich team to take us to the Premier League in 25 years. No team could have immediately followed the 22-24 squad but they are on the verge of delivering exactly what the owners, manager and every supporter would have wanted them to a year ago. The lack of respect and support from a sizeable minority is ridiculous.

I agree.

I’m out of the country at the moment so couldn’t watch the WBA game, and had very intermittent data so only checked the score a couple of times.

I was fist-pumping at the end at the point putting us in a great position.

I return to my online world, check on here and it’s all: “well, *that* was disappointing wasn’t it?”

The players must pick up on this (or read it directly). They must be wondering what they have to do.

I thought to myself a few weeks ago that if we get to the QPR game with our fate in our own hands then that will be a fantastic position to be in. So I too was thrilled with the point yesterday! Of course, 3 points would have been even better, but the key yesterday was to not get beat. West Brom are unbeaten in 10, clean sheets in 7 of those games, it was very hot yesterday for the first time since last summer so to come away without conceding and without losing was a massive result.

Yes, there's still work to do and nothing is guaranteed, but given the challenges of the season it's still an achievement to be in this position.

I get the concerns, indeed I share a lot of them, but at the end of the day we are on the cusp of a third promotion in four years - something that felt light years away in 2018/19.

This week should be all about supporting our club 100% to get over the finish line. There's a time and place to air concerns and worries, but this week absolutely is not that time.

Other than the 'Marley' moment not sure that is true.

This team beat that lot twice which counts for a lot.

The final home game may have distorted my memory and I’m glad we didn’t go down the “you’re not fit to wear the shirt” route but it doesn’t feel as if there’s as much support for the current team than there was for that group who were instrumental in the most humiliating season in 60 years.

The 2018/19 we're nowhere near good enough when it comes to quality. Hurst basically gutted the squad and brought in players from a lower level on the cheap, thinking it would work. It was never going to. They never stopped trying but it was too big a bridge to gap. That's why the players got support throughout that season. It certainly dissipated when, on paper, a strong squad for League One fell away in 2019/20.

For all the criticism, it's easy to forget how tense everything was after we drew at Bristol Rovers in mid February 2023. Didn't Morsy have a confrontation with some fans? Despite questions being asked on social media, there is no doubt that, home and away, support has been united behind the players - even after bad results.

You’ve solved the riddle yourself if you didn’t watch it. It wasn’t a particularly good performance even if the point was welcome. Not quite Pompey bad, but nowhere near our best again.

But that’s just one game. The OP is miles wide of the mark though imo. They’ve had good support most of the season and FPR has continued to be full. Crowds were dropping to about 17k in 18/19. Plus how could anyone doubt the support shown just a couple of weeks ago:

Disagree. We'd been circling the drain in the Champ for a little while before we went down, and I think there realisation was that it wasn't the players necessarily but the board who let the club become run down and a shadow oif what it is now. We've got much greater resources now, and haven't necessarily used that money wisely - players with big price tags who have arguably underperformed this year in terms of numbers - Azon / Hirst / McAteer / Egeli / Akpom / Cajuste / Johnson. We didn't have the team to compete in 18/19. You could argue that we may not do at present either, but a £60-70m squad comes with expectations over sympathy.

George Hirst signed for an initial £1.5m. A huge sum for L1, small change now. If he moves on (and who can blame him if he does given the dogs abuse and derision he’s received from our finest), will we get the transfer fee back? I defy anyone to say we won’t. And even if he was given a free transfer, we’d still have had massive contributions from him in the last two promotion seasons. So no big price tag there.

Cajuste, Akpom, Azon are on loan. I gather from here there’s a fee for two of them if we get promoted. Who cares. Any fee will be peanuts compared to the money the tv wallahs will be paying. Of them I only really knew of Cajuste and at the time could see no reason to sign him up. No output.

That leaves McAteer and Egeli. Egeli is a young man who a lot of clubs were after. I’ve seen enough of him to know he’s got a lot about him. As it goes I doubt the selling club said give us £1m and we said no, no no, we want to pay £17.5m. Did I think he’d give us more this year? Yes, but he’s young and players develop at different rates.

McAteer? A strange one, but if we get promoted, the fee paid will be insignificant. If we don’t he will be a valuable asset assuming whoever replaces McKenna wants him.

Have we used the transfer budget wisely? Not always. Some successes some question marks, some disappointments. Just like every club since the dawn of time, bar Robson who actually brought very few players in during his time (13?). Recruitment has been good and some not so good.

You are right. We circled the drain for some time before we went down. McCarthy pragmatism and contacts artificially propped us up for some years. We didn’t deserve to be in the Championship for too much of the time we were there. Largely dreadful football in crumbling facilities with an owner who sweated the assets like A boxer trying to get his weight down before the weigh-in.

Yet the garbage team that went down unable to beat an egg were lionised compared to the team of now. Real heroes. The L1 team Cook inherited that didn’t give a monkeys and downed tools at Northampton and Wimbledon got a fraction of the abuse the current team are getting. ‘Our Nors’ - a real hero to some. ‘Oooh he’s really made an effort to get in shape during the summer’. Great. Nobody questioned why he was carrying tonnage in the first place.

I don’t understand it. 2026 entitlement and expectation I guess, but I find it sad.

Personally, I don't remember that. The 2018/19 team, yes, that got support for the reasons outlined above. But the Lambert League One and Cook teams for the most part were lambasted, firsty for lack of tactical acumen and then lack of effort. Everyone got excited for "demolition man" only for it to get worse. And there were certainly questions asked about the amount of money spent on a squad which was little better than the one which preceded it. The difference is the previous squad was hardly adored by the fans.
