Thought the ref was excellent last night 19:17 - Apr 29 with 1341 viewsDubtractor

Not sure he got a decision wrong all night.

Thought it was worth mentioning as we all pile in when they have a bad game.

Generally yes. Though the Saints goal came directly from clearly incorrect corner and throw in decisions in quick succession.

Thought the lino near us was poor though and worse still he had cut his regulation FA socks and added grip socks... whatever next Refs with vaporub? Unbelievable scenes

Hmm. He had some fazes of it going a bit our way and then theirs. Generally good though.

Having said all of that, and on the lino I guess more than the ref. Just before their goal they got a corner that was blatantly a goal kick which was then compounded by a clear throw to is which was given to them from which they went and got the free kick for the equaliser. Very annoying.

But we did have the benefit of replays...

Yes. I was going to mention this.

Yeah thought he was excellent. Makes all the difference to the flow of a game. Fantastic game game which could easily have been ruined by a ref forever stopping the game, which we've had a few times this season.

And the second after a harsh foul against Furlong.

Minor things and we had opportunities to defend we didn’t take.

I think it was more the players. Both teams went at it and left all cheating in the dressing room. It was one team versus another team and that was it.

If I was the ref I would have walked off and said I really enjoyed that match.

I'd forgotten that throw in, though its a forgivable error in real time.

Agreed, the ref had a good game which the players contributed towards. Good to see Saints not doing a Derby with co-ordinated injuries’. They went for it for 90 minutes as did we. Met a Saints fan on the train today who seeing my Town jacket was full of praise for our team and fans.
Hope they win the play offs.

Well, it helped that there were 2 footballing sides out there and also 2 sides that both wanted to win the game. Not sure if Saints could or should have tried to shut up shop after taking the lead, but hard to suddenly go into that mode if it's not your team's style.

Yes, the same Mr Kirk who refereed the home derby game this season & did an excellent job there as well. While he was conned into giving Stoke their ridiculous late penalty, he's only been doing the Championship since 2023 & has done 5 Premier League games this season so I reckon he's on the way up.

Yep, agreed. I thought he was very good and you didn’t notice him, which is the aim.

I think the biggest battle a ref has is commanding respect. His letting things go rather than blowing up for every niggle was excellent, and allowed the players to settle into the game. But he wasn't afraid of the big decisions - Greaves foul for the free kick/allowing Greaves' tackle for the build up to our goal. Just my recollections.

Pretty good performance, I'd say, and made for a very entertaining, competitive match.

I thought he was very good until I read all the salty Saints’ (and others) comments about us being “favoured”, “corrupt “, “cheats” etc and realised I was wrong.

The only downside for me was that he bought Scienza's theatrics.

At one stage I walked a bit too close to the telly and the bloke fell over.

The commentator on the international stream was hugely complimentary of the ref and I thought he was excellent.

However, several Saints fans on their forum thought it was one of the worst ref performances they've had all season - think they should have had two 'stonewall' penalties in the first half (the O'Shea and Saints player leaning into each other before the guy fell over, and the Furlong 'handball'); and then there was apparently a blatant foul by us in the build up to our first goal; and Greaves should have been sent off for a two footed reckless tackle. There's even a couple who think there was a case for Azon to be red carded for the pull back just before he was subbed because it was 'so deliberate'.

To be fair there are a few voices of reason that have pointed out all of those above were correctly adjudicated by the ref; but it is amazing how rose tinted some fan's glasses are.

Well apart from disallowing that perfectly good goal right at the end at the Ipswich player was clearly 2 yards onside

Not really - I've lost count of the times on here where plenty of people have kicked off about how poor the ref was, largely because he didn't give all the debatable decisions Town's way.
Who'd be a referee, eh?
