The guy was a ruddy tool for that episode, I was ruddy livid, but let’s get on with it. Now where are the (non loan obligation) transfers Mark?????? Get a move on.* *yes, I can see that yet another post on the subject brings it up. Again. But so what. [Post edited 5 May 18:34]

There are still a lot of questions and, IMO, a fair bit to come out around what actually happened and why. What was he trying to achieve? I still have a hard time seeing Ashton as a natural Farage supporter, given his background in club-community work (since he first started in admin at West Brom), his apparent attitude to things like diversity, the women's team and so on. But who knows? On the other hand, he has a track record of overseeing good work at Ipswich Town (even if some of the transfers have been open to question, the rest is a total sea-change from the preceding era). Would we find anyone with the same dynamism and capability? I'd certainly be happier if there was more oversight, i.e. the Chairman and Chief Exec roles being split again. I'm not going to boycott the club over what he did, but it has changed my attitude to Ashton. Much more wary.

Taking Farage at his word (I know) Ashton and the club were said to be opposed to the proposed football regulator. That is a massive red flag for me, why would they be opposing a regulator set up to protect the interests of football fans?

Indeed. A regulator is something I think is a good idea. However, I'm not inclined to trust Farage's angle on anything much, without a lot of supporting evidence.

Those who are happy to move on seem to justify it with the idea Ashton was naïve and didn't realise what he was doing. I cannot see that as being the case but, if it were, shouldn't that ring alarm bells that someone so naïve should have full control of the club without anyone to hold him to account? Ashton out!

Ashton has been total open on his views about the regulator, and his views are not unreasonable imo I have my reservations on how it’s being set up - we really don’t need another toothless government inspired organisation that fails to make any real difference. Is that Ashton's reasoning for his objections to it? And, if so, why isn't he discussing it with those in power to make the decision instead of Farage?

I think he misguidedly saw an ally in the whole football regulator debate and the whole thing just got carried away. As much as I despise Farage and Reform, it was the subsequent attempt at covering it up, and the perfunctory approach to an apology that upset me most. The main reason he was celebrating so much on the bus yesterday was because he’s seen his salvation. He’s a lucky boy. Shame that I can bear a grudge for years though!

I need educating (genuinely) as am not sure what his objections are? What does he oppose? Has he spoken or written publicly on his objections?

The original act was bad, but the lying to make out it was an innocent mistake when there was evidently a lot more to it, followed by a really weak apology, for me he treated the fans with a lot of disrespect. Then there's the Blue Action stuff which shows a similar disregard for the fans, the hiking of ST prices two years in a row, and for all the rhetoric about the fans being the life blood of the club, I think it's clear they aren't his main priority. The football regulator stuff kind of backs that up too. That's before getting into the egotistical stuff, putting himself front and centre of every success and distancing himself from any failures. The increasingly patchy record of delivering genuine success as we've gone up the levels (our last really outstanding transfer window was January 2023 you could argue, summer 2023 not bad but not the kind of dazzling business we were promised). Is he someone to lead a club once run by the Cobbolds as a big family? Does he have the integrity of managers like Robson, Ramsay, and even McKenna? Not for me, Clive.

We don’t know everyone he’s been speaking to, do we? However, in his interview last year it’s clear he’s been speaking to many other parties involved, including the regulator, government, etc and that was way before Farage happened.

Depends if you consider the Fan’s Forum and TWTD ‘publicly’ Ashton: We Must Shape the Regulator 19th Nov 2025 12:54Blues CEO and chairman Mark Ashton believes football should shape the new independent regulator and revealed that the governing bodies use Town’s ownership as an example of how they would like clubs to be run. 3

Now I'm proper confused as that doesn't sound like he's opposed to it at all. Wanting to influence the shape of it is perfectly reasonable. Which begs the question, why did Farage say Ashton & the club were opposed to it? Was Farage being less than honest? Why would he lie about that?

Attempting to accept the views in your first paragraph (Im not sure how much truth there was in the Blue Action story) the utopia CEO/Chairman no longer exists in the modern football world. Certainly at the top end. The second paragraph is rather silly, of course theres been mistakes, but weve achieved promotion at the first attempt. I struggle to find criticism in that basic fact. In the third paragraph you are wanting sonething that simply wont happen. If/when Ashton goes, he will be replaced with someone very similar. The days of the Cobbolds are long gone Im afraid. Not saying its a good thing, its just fact. Ive tried to be reasonable with my response, I hope its treated with similar replies

Two members of Blue Action told me about Ashton threatening them well ahead of the Farage visit. I said exactly that at the time one of them went public with the threats that were made against them. Appreciate the desire to keep it civil, like you I hope everyone keeps it that way on this thread.

You’re surprised that Farage might lie? I’m not - although to be fair, the quotes I can find that are attributed to Farage only say that he said ‘they met to discuss the football regulator’. It is others that suggested/reported that both Farage & Ashton are against the regulator. I may have missed something though.

Clearly there is no point trying to keep it civil, the downvotes and responses so far prove that. This board is has descended into farce, so the only way of playing it, is to join in. Such a shame
