Transfer expectations 16:56 - May 11 with 2795 viewsottovonbismark

I'm posting this in part to see what people think in terms of transfers this summer, mainly incoming of course.

I've read a few threads on this topic and most seem fairly grounded in reality. Whoever is in charge of recruitment at ITFC this summer certainly has their work cut out for them. It's going to be an incredibly difficult market, further complicated and maybe delayed by the WC, teams waiting to see who performs well etc.

If we get 4 to 5 key positions covered, centre forward x 2 at a minimum, a partner for Matusiwa in CM, a decent CB and keeper I'd nearly be happy with that.

Thoughts?

I cannot believe people think 5 signings would be fine.

It's not like we've not been in the PL for ages and our views are distorted. We were there a year ago so we all know how much of a step up it is.

I know people won't like it, but not many of this current team are PL standard. Some from before we know aren't quite good enough, and others are untested.

Say Matusiwa, I like him, but he did make errors and got away with most of them in games. In the PL, you know he's going to get caught more and a higher % of errors will be punished.

Sadly we need pretty much a whole new team. At least 8 new starters I would say. I think this summer will definite what the club wants to do. Either play the Yo-yuo game and "hope" we stay up, or get PL ready players.

I appreciate it's a lot more difficult getting the latter in reality.

A lot has been mentioned about Sunderland this year and they have been great but so have Leeds. Xhaka was a great signing but both teams signed lots of athletes from abroad. The championship is a brutal attritional league but there was clearly a step up last season that a number of players couldn't adapt to. I'd be very disappointed if we went down that avenue for recruitment again. We need to be signing a large number of players from abroad to give us a chance.
We won't be dominating the ball next season so pace on the counter attack is crucial and we really lack that imo.

You do have to wonder about the expectation levels when people were saying they wouldn't want someone like Soucek.

A couple of people have suggested Bowen as well...

I think it's actually quite difficult for people to name potential signings for the prem

What is the minimal level of talent that could help us stay up v whats far far out of reach

I think if you're watching prem or other higher levels of football, you're not really watching 'non' stars imo, I couldn't really tell you for example who most prem clubs have in their sides. I've watched a fair number of prem games this season, but defo couldn't tell you who lined up for fulham or palace.

I think five is the max we can expect in terms of big-name marquee signings that you'd expect to start most games. That alone would probably exhaust the kitty.

The rest will be filler/bench options/speculative prospects we can pick up on the cheap and bring some depth.

If we only sign 5 and keep the team we have now we would get battered every week, this is the reality.

We need 10 new players that can play the full game every week.

Yep. 100%

Though I wouldn't touch our left wingers, I want to give Jaden/Clarke a chance to prove themselves at the higher level now they are settled and integrated here

It would be welcomed if Jaden and J.Clarke made an impact but I think we all know they are not premier league players, they are the top top championship players and would walk into any champ side.

Hutchinson went to Forest and actually plays games so we got that one right, no once else from our current crop would get in the other clubs teams is what we are up against.

Not sure I agree with that. If Delap had gone to Forest or even Spurs, he'd be getting a lot more game time than he is at Chelsea, the jump was just too big. And as regards J Clarke/Jaden, we have scored 28 goals from our left wing position. That's way more than we scored from the right wing in the previous Championship promotion season, so you have to say that Clarke and Philogene are good shouts to make the step up as Omari has done.
But as per my earlier post, I think we need 10 new players, and we need them in early. We need a great pre-season to integrate them to patterns of play, all this is what McKenna is brilliant at - as long as he has time on the training ground and at the pre-season with them. He didn't have that last season.

Why does it have to be half way through the new season before they gel ?

History tells us that in a Mckenna team, Sunderland managed it this season but they're unique that way.
Yes a few years ago Villa and Forest went up and bought whole new teams but they struggled and just survived at the end (which I think we'd all take)

Maybe I just have a bit more faith in a lot of our players than most of you lot!! I believe given time McKenna will get our team to perform better than the sum of its parts, but that won't happen if it's a whole new team again

1 keeper
1 right back
1 centre back
2 centre mids
1 right winger
1 number 10
2 strikers

The above would fill the obvious gaps in the squad for me. Aim for quality over quantity as we aren’t going to accumulate 20+ premier league level players immediately.

The likes of Nunez, Mehmeti, Greaves, Walton, Taylor and Johnson probably won’t be good enough (or have already shown they aren’t good enough) but will be needed for depth

I think that's largely right.

I do wonder whether Kieran will risk leaving the LB department as just Leif plus Greaves and possibly Johnson as backups? That certainly wouldn't be an overly strong department for the Premier League. Over at RB I think we know we'll be in the market for one - hopefully an intended starter, with Furlong deputising/competing.

Yes, we never seem to get our business done early, and we always seem to be behind the 8 ball (although having said that, our late season form was even worse in the PL than our early season).

It's hard though isn't it? We're competing with teams bigger and richer and more attractive than ourselves, and we won't be calling the shots very often. Changing divisions means a need to buy (and/or dispose of) many players, and that just takes a lot of time. We're waiting on incomings and outgoings at once, and it must just take ages to get 20-odd deals over the line. If we have a list of options, how long do we wait before giving up on the first choice target?

I do think there's a premium to be attached to getting the business done early, but then, we can't possibly know how realistic that is.

It is agreed we need a new team, how is easy is it to sign 10 players in 12 weeks, I assume not very.

So... I have been watching the PL this season in anticipation to try and get into for next season, it is like almost watching a different sport the players are massive and really fast.

On that basis Clarke and Jaden are not PL level players, if we can get £40 - £60m for the pair then use that money to buy one LW who can play the full game and is not going to get knocked off the ball by some 6 foot 5 right back.

Fun fact the average height of a premier league player is 6 foot 1.
