| New fan acquired by accident on 07:25 - May 12 with 1767 views | Nthsuffolkblue | Welcome, Zach. It is quite a subtle Town top. There is a line missing from the paragraph: "Peterson had some knowledge of English football but only of the bigger clubs, so he started to look into Ipswich Town." It should read "He soon discovered they too are a bigger club and so it was natural to support them." [Post edited 12 May 7:40]

Ah but you had a bit of a head start there; I was told you always had a penchant for a tight end.

Obvs not the MSL yet but maybe there's hope.

| New fan acquired by accident on 13:56 - May 12 with 883 views | Churchman | That’s a great story. I’ve never heard of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Brilliant name. I’ll look them up. The Chicago Bears? Been my NFL team since the early 80s. Most of the time they’ve been cr@p, which is rather comforting. Having lived in Kent for a lot of years, Kent CCC have always been my cricket team. Most of the t8me they’ve been cr@p too. Bit of a theme really. | | | |

It’s their college NFL team, big ten. They don’t have a professional side so Chicago would be the obvious choice for most Midwest states until you get as far west as Colorado.

It’s an underrated flyover state, cheap cost of living, good steak. Lincoln and Omaha are decent cities with plenty to do. Lots and lots of cornfields, so obviously full of tractor boys.

Maybe the Cornhuskers could become our Dortmund of the US, with similar reciprocal visits & followings?

Lots of Olympians in various sports, 181. No mention of men's soccer, though :( Women's players have played in several World Cups, mainly representing Canada. As a husker, I am disappointed to hear this. I can assure you that he isn't the only ITFC fan in this state. As for the program, it is associated with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The football team has won five national championships and has a stadium with a capacity of over 85,000 which it has sold out every home game dating back to 1962. The men's basketball team reached the sweet 16 for the first time in its history this year. The women's volleyball program has won five championships and is the best in the country at present. The volleyball arena has a capacity of over 8,000 and has sold out every home match since 2001. They set a record for attendance at a women's sporting event with over 92,000 when they played in the football stadium last year. Girls' volleyball is huge in this state and currently has two professional teams.

Guthers OP sparked an educative online tour - I'd actually just looked it up to see where it is geographically Sounds great, mountain lions, & a continental climate, so cold winters, hot summers but semi-arid in the west. Lincoln, or just outside it, sounds a good place to live :)

Breweries, cheap housing, great steaks, sports, American women, what’s not to like! Well actually the tax is rather high as they don’t get many tourist dollars and maybe the outside threat of tornados. When I was in Omaha I had a bout 4 different taxes on my restaurant the bill. It’s a pretty wholesome place though with good people in my experience. Got a friend who lives on the Iowa/Nebraska border just outside of Omaha. I haven’t been to Lincoln but heard good things.

My ignorance knows no limits. Apologies. I know that College related sport is huge in the US having been to the country a few times, but never that part. I’ve neither followed college sport or quite understand why it is so popular. As for the Cornhuskers, I’ve looked them up on Wiki and yes, the attendances are huge and it’s history long. It’s a great story and pleased there is more than one ITFC fan in the State. On a slightly different tack, when I did a Viking river cruise in Portugal a couple of years ago, nearly all of the 90 odd passengers were American. Lovely people who we got on great with. I wore my ITFC baseball cap when we visited places and a good number of the guests asked me about it. Two or three even asked for pictures of the badge to show the folks back home. None had heard of Ipswich Town, as you’d expect though plenty knew about the Premier League. We shared common ground on NFL, NHL and MLB as I have reasonable knowledge of those as an outsider. We have a law called Title IX which prohibits discrimination based on sex for any institution that receives federal assistance. In practice, this means that for every male that receives an athletic scholarship, one has to be awarded to a female athlete as well. Because football is so popular in this country and because programs can offer up to 85 scholarships for football, there are many schools that only have women's soccer to balance the numbers.

I’ve never been. We did just that flew over it to Nevada, California, Oregon and then flew back to Maine. I have had a look and of course the Cornhuskers are part of the intercollegiate setup. We used to go and watch the Maine Bears and they were the same (although probably a lower league). That college setup isn’t something we’re used to back over here in the UK is it. Aren’t they amateur? I can’t think of any non-professional sports in the UK that get anywhere near the amount of fans.

Think of the difference between professional sports versus collegiate sports in the same way you think of the Premier League versus the EFL and below. College sports is more about regional identities and regional rivalries. You are either from there, attended university there, or are part of the diaspora there from.
