The cheating has had a direct impact on the result

Impossible to prove. In the first leg Boro were by far the better side. Just not possible to prove how much it did or didn't impact the result.

Surely, boro want saints kicked out as they believe the cheating gave saints an unfair advantage, as has been said no one can proove one way ir other how much of an advantage was gained but as we all know football is about fine margins I can't really see an amicable way to resolve this as one side or other will be deeply resentful by the result, pretty sure this will rumble on

How many other opposition teams had they spied on in their long unbeaten run that took them up to the playoff positions in the first place? It's not necessarily just about one incident really, is it?

Boro want Saints kicked out because they want a £200m match against Hull. 'Spygate' is their justification. It doesn't really matter to what extent Boro were disadvantaged, and its impossible to quantify. Southampton broke a clear rule, it was deliberate, and according to some reports isn't the first time they've done it. I don't think a poxy fine will be enough of a punishment given the stakes involved tbh, nor would it compensate Boro. It wouldn't be unreasonable to award the tie to Boro and them progress to the final. The result of Swindon's FA Trophy game a few months back was overturned and Luton progressed to the next round as they fielded an ineligible player and brought another off the bench who wasn't added to the team sheet (admin error). Should do the same here. Whatever they decide the opposing club is going to appeal, which will take yet more time.

So Wrexham should be involved in the equation as well? The whole thing is a mess. Other teams have lost out unfairly (if it is proven Southampton have cheated). As ever, it is only the cheating team that will be punished, those who were cheated out of something won't benefit. Which is why my thought is carry on with the final and if Southampton are found guilty the punishment then depends on the outcome of the "final". If Southampton have won it, the result is overturned and Hull are promoted (effectively Southampton forfeit the competition). If Hull have won, the punishment is then a points deduction for next season for Southampton.
