Training ground opening in June? Quiet Portman Road this summer? 09:49 - May 17 with 2145 viewsunstableblue

Ashton said in a EADT article in March that the training ground was on time and on budget at £30m

And opening in June, but I’d heard this had moved to later summer, any recent updates?:

“In June, we’ll see the training ground complete. It’s an incredible structure, multi-million pounds of investment. Excuse the pun, but it’s a gamechanger for the first team, it will significantly be a gamechanger for the academy, and for our women’s team.“

Should still be an asset in impressing would be recruits. But would be good if in fact complete in June and ready for player return.

Portman Road was manic this time ahead of our Prem return, with site works set up and construction projects all over the ground.

I know in the article Ashton talked of other revenue generating projects being worked on around the full site. But apart from some safe standing - extra 500 seats?* and I assume the reinstatement of the larger away end configuration.

Is there anything else happening this summer?

Will be good to be actually filling the massive press box again.

* where else could you squeeze in more seats into PR - that section under A Block?

Imagine that whole ground floor concourse area is being done up toilets are rammed on a Matchday.

Any thoughts on training ground opening? June would be great (edit: Phil states July)

Indeed, and wouldn't surprise me if there were one or two, I think recruitment this summer will be far more overseas-based than in previous summers.

If South American, let’s hope it’s more Taricco and Nunez and less Adrian Paz. The latter looked like a bandit, played like a one arm bandit!

Mauricio though, what a player. After GB and Mills, he became one of the best full backs I’ve ever seen represent ITFC. Nicely evil too.

Final Assessment

South American-born players at Ipswich Town have usually fallen into one of three categories:

1) Pioneers (Taricco, Paz)
2) Cult technical talents (Peralta)
3) Injury-interrupted promise (Civelli)

I don't think safe standing creates any capacity increase.

It doesn't as such, but the club have been able to reconfigure the seating to squeeze in a couple of extra seats in each row of SBR lower.

They're also moving the disabled areas towards the goal in SBR lower, so have been able to put extra seats in blocks 4 and 6.

Not sure what they are doing to create extra capacity in SAR lower.

They've taken up half the practice pitch astro and look to be doing grounds work drilling, I assume, to investigate for pillings to support the additional tier. They've also removed all the signage across the back of the stand, and as others mentioned, look to be refitting the toilets at the SBR end of the stand.

If not for the start of the season then maybe part way through. Is it possible to start building that tier whilst the stand is still open?

Out of interest, if you put up temporary scaffold seats like they have at silverstone, would you need planning permission as it's a temporary structure?

I'd think they have plenty of space to do the foundation work and build behind the current structure. Obviously, the main part will be removing the roof. It's going to be a massive stand when finished.

Ah the days of open air stands including the bogs. Reminds me of the monsoon on New Years Day at Port Vale in 1990, or a Friday night at Huddersfield in 1988 absolutely drenched on the open terrace.

You could, but the second you put a roof on it, I think it would require planning consent.

It'll only be investigative work. Soil samples etc, as you said, to judge the depth of the pilings required.

Anything other than that, like substantive ground works ahead of construction would need planning approval, so I suspect this is preparatory with the aim of the roof removal works to take place next summer, so any west stand expansion is good to go for 2027/28.

Almost implies that the Cobbold will be closed in that season.
