Town on MOTD - a rather brilliant set of highlights 21:41 - May 17 with 1478 viewsVic

Following the successful "25 Years of Match of the Day" series, BBC Video now offers a modern day history of famous clubs seen through the programme's lens since 1964. Ipswich Town were a strong Second Division side under the auspices of Bill McGarry when Match of the Day cameras first came to Portman Road. In 1969, he was succeeded by Bobby Robson, a manager who was to transform the Club into a highly respected First Division outfit.

Certainly viewers were treated to some memorable football by a side that flourished during his managerial reign.

With players like Mick Mills, John Wark, Paul Mariner and the great Dutch pairing of Thijssen and Muhren, Robson led the club to their most sustained period of success; winning the FA Cup in 1978, twice championship runners-up and landing the UEFA Cup in 1981.

This superb video captures some of the great memories over the years and features some of the favourites that have graced Portman Road: Viljoen, Whymark, Gates, Cooper, Mariner, Wark, not to forget the man whose goal won the Cup in 1978: Roger Osborne.

I was fortunate to have witnessed those glory years, at least until the end of '77 when I left for the US to do my graduate studies. What I remember, and what comes across clearly in the video, is the continuity; the same players week on week, year on year. Very little churn from season to season, and of course Bobby always at the helm. Those scenes are etched in my memory. I doubt the like can ever be duplicated, but Kieren is our best hope for a shot at it.

Thanks for posting. I’ll have a look at that again. I bought and still have the video, but no video recorder!

Robson’s time seems so long ago now - because it was. I wish I’d appreciated what we were seeing more at the time but that’s how it is when you are young and know nothing else.

Different time, different world.

Sounds like the theme to a late 70s kung fu flick. Brilliant.

Cracking watch - thanks for sharing!

I'm far too young to have experienced them, but some of those crowd surges on the big terraces look absolutely terrifying.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

I ended up in the Holte End when English clubs were allowed back into Europe after Hysel as a good friend is a Villa fan.

Villa v Inter, Villa winning 2-0 with goals from Kent Neilson and David Platt.

After the Platt goal, I swear I went from halfway up the Holte to about 10 terrace steps from the front in a matter of seconds.

Haven't seen this yet, but does it include the game against WBA at PR in the early 60s, with the slightly surreal sight of Mr Robson playing against us? If not, it's on YouTube and a fascinating watch.

I’ve posted this before but this thread seems as good a place as any to do it again, but you can enjoy the whole of the 1984 game between Liverpool and Ipswich here. Cracking goals, especially Eric Gates’s second and a good end to end match as well.
