Midweek away at Cambridge - was 17 - and remember walking to the station in Braintree. Evening game and last train wouldn't get me home - so figured I'd just ask people in cars for lift - see if anyone was heading my direction. If not, kip at the station.

In Town two blokes pulled up and asked for directions to Cambridge - they were going to the game (From Witham?) so I blagged a lift both ways.

We lost.

Norwich away in the 2023-24 season.

At a funeral in Cornwall the day before, and although a sad occasion, a chance to see family members I don’t see too often, so I decided not to leave straight after the cucumber sandwiches and pasties and stay for the evening.

Plan was to catch the overnight train back to London, then on to Ipswich and then Norwich for the game.

Train strikes put paid to that, so I ended up waiting in a lay-by in Bodmin at 10.50pm for a National Express coach to Heathrow. Arrived at Heathrow at 5am, Liz Line to Liv St.
The usual railworks on the East Anglian mainline then meant a train to Billericay, a coach from there to Mountnessing and then train from there to Ipswich. Back home for a shower and some breakfast then back at Ipswich station to go to the game…. In which we promptly turned in our worst performance of the season to lose to Nunez’s goal.

Another nomination would be Liverpool away in 1995… was at uni and had been to Wrexham the week before to see us lose in the cup. Can remember changing trains at Crewe on the way to the game and wondering what on earth I was doing. Adam Tanner made me see sense…

Midweek game in late sixties. Was going to travel down on train from Beccles with my mate Trev but last train back was too early. Met a guy in Paddy’s Cafe in Beccles who, to this day, I only knew as Chunky. Said he was going and would give us a lift back. Said he’d meet us at half-time under the North Stand ‘somewhere’. Went down at half-time, looked around, tapped on shoulder. There was Chunky. Good as his word, gave us a lift home after the match. Don’t think I’ve ever seen him since.

If you recognise this, Cheers to you Chunky

Mine wasn't that interesting the last two times I shared it but it's been a while...

Back when I had my first season ticket, was Royle's first full season in charge I think. I was always really excited for the pending match.

Had spent the week on a fam holiday in Inverness, drove all the way back to Ippy through the night so I could be home in good enough time to get a bit of sleep then go to the game.

Realised when I got home I'd made a mistake, the fixture was AWAY, not home, and it was at Crewe.

Feeling disappointed I was determined I was going to go anyways - checked the travel time, found there were still tickets available, jumped straight back in my car and began the long drive to Crewe. Alone. Having just come home from Inverness.

It was a hot late-Summer day, no aircon in my Mondeo, and I spent a lot of time sat cooking in traffic on the M6. Had a nasty headache by the time I arrived. Hadn't slept in about 30 hours. Town lost 1-0 , then back in car for the long drive home.

Over a thousand miles driven across two sleepless days (not sensible, kids) to see a drab 1-0 loss.

Not quite so random but it feels like another time to me.

Bolton away in the play-offs in 1999, I was at uni so couldn't easily get a ticket for the away end in time. A town fan I knew at the time had got one in the family stand as his girlfriend's younger brothers had season tickets so I got one that way too.

I got a taxi from Bolton station with some random home fans, was too early for the pubs so got some beers from Asda and drunk them outside until we got moved on by a security guard. Then went to a pub, was all vey pleasant - other than it being a sh1t pub on a retail park.

There were three Town fans in the home end, all inconspicuous right until the moment David Johnson was fouled in the area and no penalty was given. Ah...

Was fortunately not kicked out, and had a good chat with the bloke next to me about football afterwards.

I watched Norwich at Tranmere from the away end too once, they lost 2-0 and had two players sent off. That was hilarious, Mike Milligan even slower trudging off than he had been in the tackle that was the problem in the first place.

October '63; 12 yr old me with dread Tuesday timetable at school, followed by even greater dread of dentist appointment afterwards. But then! - light and hope on the evening horizon in the shape of home League Cup tie against lowly Walsall (Town were in their second season after winning the first division under Alf, although later that season they would drop back into the oblivion that most people thought had been our natural position - if, that is, they thought about us at all). Walsall would also be relegated later that season into Div 3.

As my tooth and jaw continued to remind me of my earlier evening tryst, Town were providing a good on-pitch parallel, achingly poor, jaw-droppingly inept. My day-long anticipation turned out to be a 0-0 disappointment. Worse was to come that relegation season, including a 0-1 defeat in the replay at Walsall. That home game that probably most who had witnessed forgot before the week was out, turned out for me to be a warning not to expect too much if football was to be your main hope in life. Anyone who sits near me now understand why my pre-match prediction generally turns out to be more cautious than theirs.

2000 play off semi final at home to Bolton. I'd forgotten to get a ticket (i was a teenager in Sixth form). There was a comp in the East Anglian for tickets the day before so took a punt (only time ever I think).

Went to school as normal, came home and my mum gave me a look. Turns out I'd won the pair of tickets and she'd had to frantically coordinate with one of her friend's sons to get to the EADT office before it closed to get the tickets - I didn't have a mobile so was none the wiser as to the chaos I'd caused when I initially walked through the door.

Anyway, what a game. Spent the entirety sat next to Glenn Hoddle. A few days later I'm sleeping outside the ticket office to get a Wembley ticket with hundreds (thousands?) of others.

Man City away at the old Maine Road, Friday night opening game, August 1996.

Car broke down repeatedly on the way, had to get RAC out twice to get us there. Parked somewhere in Moss Side and hoped for the best. Broke down again almost immediately on the way home, car dead this time. Called RAC again and had to sit in Moss Side waiting for the guy to turn up. Eventually he arrived and told us the car was dead. He only had two fingers on one of his hands, which he constantly used to chain smoke cigarettes. Had to wait another two hours for the tow-truck. Ate fried chicken in the car as the whole population of Moss Side provided 'feedback' on our situation. When the tow-truck driver arrived he refused to get out of the car "without a weapon" until he moved the car to a side street. Hooked us up, drove us back past Maine Road at 1am, 50mph all the way back to Cambridge. Got in at 5am.

Lost 1-0. Steve Lomas.

Norwich away in April 2007, I went without a ticket, and was just standing outside the away turnstiles and about 10 mins in a couple turned up late and happened to have a spare ticket, so gave it to me.

Same scenario for our last game at Layer Road in April 2008. A Col U fan had a complimentary ticket in the section next to the away fans and sold it to me for £10. When I got in, the steward asked me if I was a Town fan, and let me in to the away end. Was a terrible game though.

Flew down for a game with the boy around 2008 or 09. Picked up the hire car at Stansted and got as far as Braintree when I noticed the clutch had gone. Didn’t have time to wait for recovery as I would have missed the game so bravely carried on. By Marks Tey it was stinking of burning rubber. By the time I got to the Holiday Inn there was smoke coming out of the bonnet so I dumped the car by the side of the road, left the keys in it and started walking to Portman Road.

We were carrying overnight bags and were really struggling (GB Junior would have been 8 at the time). Thankfully some Town fans pulled over and gave us a lift. Made the game just in time. Glad we neve& missed it as we beat Bristol City 6-0.

At half time I phoned Eurocar and told them what happened and they had another car waiting for me in Ipswich after the game.

Early 1970s. In my teens. College had just finished for Christmas so we went to the local pub in Lowestoft at lunchtime (as you did). Two or three pints in and a bloke started asking if anyone fancied going to Leicester that night to see Town play? They often used to switch Saturday pre-Christmas games to Friday nights in those days. They thought attendances would be low on the Saturday as wives and girlfriends dragged their fellas out to do the Xmas shopping. Anyway, we'd never seen this chap before, but we said yeah, why not? So we hopped in his car and off we went. We got lost a few times but hours later arrived in time for the match (which we won) but more beer was consumed and my memory of the details is a little blurry. After the match we set off for home only for matey to declare that we were running out of petrol. A desperate search was made for an all-night garage which in those days took ten bob notes. The notes had to be pristeen if you remember? So much flattening and uncreasing of the notes in the darkness occured before the machine would take the bloody things. Then when it dispensed the petrol it turned out we weren't nearly empty and the tank overflowed and we ended up wasting our last ten shilling's worth!
Anyway, we eventually got home about 2.00 am , smelling of beer and petrol and I remember my mother being very displeased. The last time she'd seen me had been when I left for college at about 8.30 am the previous morning!
Not an epic tale, but as you say, the things you did when life was carefree.
I still go to the football with my pal. We have adjacent seats in Churchmans, but the bloke who gave us a lift I have never seen since that day!

27 Feb 91 - Norwich away, ZDS Cup. The powers that be decided not to make it all-ticket, so a mate who'd just passed his driving test drove me and a couple of other mates up to Carrot Road, only for us and hundreds, possibly thousands of Town fans to be locked out because the away end was full, and despite the fact we could clearly see many empty seats, we weren't getting in, so we got something to eat and drink nearby and headed home in his clapped-out old heap of a car. A pea-souper of a fog swept over the notoriously dangerous A140 and the lights in his car failed, leaving only his side lights which were about as effective as having a glow-worm in a jam jar attached to the bonnet. We crawled back as far as a pub (possibly the Stonham Magpie, but I've a feeling it was probably somewhere nearer Norwich than that), and had to pull in as we'd narrowly avoided a crash with a lorry - I distinctly remember one of my mates screaming 'pull over or we're all going to die!'. We then got someone who had functioning headlights on their car to let us tailgate them back onto the A14 (A45 as it was then), and we just about made it home in one piece, heaven knows how. Miserable but memorable night, heard on the radio we lost 2-0 as well, Dale Gordon scored one of them, can't remember the other scorer

Was there for that - first ever on the club coaches - far from impressed with the plod not letting us in - it was apparently all ticket for the seats - so as you say, a fair few hundred were locked out even though there was space.

Didn't use the club coaches again for 30 years was so p*ssed off with it all.

Man Utd away in the year we got relegated under Burley. We got absolutely plastered on the way up there and we're all tired and emotional by the time of the game. My brother and one of our mates were politely asked to leave as their legs weren't working properly during the 1st half, I soldiered on but sadly my half time beer proved a challenge too much and I was gently escorted out.

None of us had mobiles but luckily bumped into each other and decided to have a beer in the pub round the corner. As the game finished and the pub filled up with Utd fans we decided best we leave but I got split up from the others in the crowds and couldn't remember for the life of me where (our sober pal) had parked his car.

At this point the coach carrying the Bedforf MUFC supporters branch went by, I had a moment of clarity and thought that will do for me and chased the b@gger for miles in the slowly moving traffic till they eventually relented and let me on.

I was home tucked up in bed with my pissed off Mrs before my pals even left Manchester as they were looking for me, checking hospitals and old bill stations.

Am I allowed to post a non-ITFC story?
I had 4 years from 1979-1983 where I barely saw a Town match because I was pursuing my own sporting dream, as a motorcycle racer. So here goes:
Summer 1981, I'd been on a work trip on a ship, docked in Aberdeen, and my road racing buddy Kevin had driven up from Lowestoft in his transit van with both our bikes (Yam TZ350s) in the back. Unbeknown to me, his Dad Steve had taken the cylinder block off my machine to do a bit of "tuning". We were racing in a Scottish national race at Knockhill on the Sunday, overlooking the Firth of Forth. My bike seized after 3 laps. Thanks Steve.

After the meeting, we set off back towards Lowestoft. Got to the borders, and the van started to stutter and misfire, we swapped over the fuel pump (had a spare) but it only got worse. Ended up with a minor fire, and a broken transit van at midnight in the middle of nowhere.
Tried to find somewhere with a phone - Kevin walked about 4 miles, and found a house that let him call the AA.
The AA van must have arrived about 3 am. Towed us to Newcastle, arrived around 4 am. Then the van was put on a trailer, and we were taken back to Lowestoft. Arrived in Lowestoft some time in the afternoon, with no sleep. Put my stricken machine in my van, and drove back to my home in Southwold. At this stage, hadn't slept for well over over 30 hours.
Tuesday had to go to work. Then after a days work had to strip my bike down, to find out what was wrong and discovered the seized crankshaft. Phoned around to find out where I could get a crank rebuild, and the best guy was George in Luton. Went to work Wednesday, then after work drove my transit van to Luton, met George, and watched as he rebuilt my crankshaft, finishing at about midnight. Then had to drive back to Southwold. Back to work on Thursday, then Thursday night I had to put the rebuilt crank back in the engine, and prep the bike. Friday back to work, then back home to load up the machine, pick up Kevin and his bike, and drive down to Brands Hatch for the early start on Saturday at what was the biggest race meeting of the year.

Unsurprisingly, I was so exhausted, I crashed in practice and got a sprained wrist. Lord only knows why I didn't just do a sickie that week. Ho hum.

Went on the train to Crewe in the League Cup in 2010, was a very tight turnaround to see the game and make my connection back home via London.

Went to ET, watched as much as I could before having to head to the station to get the last train. David Norris scored the only goal of the game seconds afterwards, which I found out about on the platform waiting for the train. Not the best story, but annoying all the same.

Innocence of youth indeed …
Man Utd away 1981/82 September.
As a 16 year ITFC nut (endorsed by the sew on patch I had), a friend and I couldn’t resist the combo of knowing that my parents were driving through Manchester on the match day morning (en route further north, for a holiday) and someone else my dad knew was driving from Glossop to Ipswich the next day. With the excitement of sleeping rough on the Saturday night, a friend and I took up the offer of the lifts. It was a hot day so no need for anything other than the clothes we had on, and a few quid.
We won the game (2-1), and then got a train to Glossop and slept rough on the golf course - an absolutely freezing September night.
Got the lift on the Sunday and slept all the way home.

So much of that wouldn’t have happened now ….

The free reign I had then has served me well.

A few months earlier I hitch hiked to Thetford forest - was about half way and it was getting dark so decided to put my tent up where I was...

Lovely flat ground, quite lucky to find it so near the road - perfect for a spot of wild camping, especially as I was in the middle of nowhere.

About 6am got woken up by a very angry bloke - he was a green keeper - turned out I was on a golf green.

Bloke was halving a proper meltdown - think my "chill out mate" response didn't help either!

Nice !
Two years after the Old Trafford visit I was hitchhiking in eastern Finland and found a nice forest spot to camp. Like most places in Finland, it was an idyllic place to stop. Consequently, we were a little surprised to wake up to the sound of heavy machinery and what sounded like gunfire.
We’d inadvertently camped in an army training area with a full military exercise going on around us - tanks and all.

Love it.

Late 90s I did a consulting job with the Naafi and visited every army base/JRC in West Germany. Public maps didn't have the sites marked (threat of terrorism) so many locations were hard to find.

One occasion (Bad Fallingbostel?) I ended up on shooting range in a local plated Merc and came face to face (Head light to head light) with a big fck off tank. Bloke lifted the lid and inquired if I was "maybe a little lost?"

November 1975. I was at Uni in Birmingham. Home games were dificult but went to loads of away matches that season.
We beat FC Brugge 3-0 at Portman Road which I missed so it seemed like a great idea to go to the away leg and celebrate getting to the next round. Left Birmingham about 10.00 pm (as a Villa match was kicking out) and plenty of "bantz" with their supporter on New Street Station. Train to London, then across to Liverpool Street where I kipped on the station until the first train to Ipswich. Walked to the ground to board the coach and off to Belgium. Across on the ferry, then to on Brugge where a few beers were consumed ready for the match!!
We lost 4-0!!!

Thursday 27th March 1975.
Town had never got further than the 5th round in the FA Cup.
In 1975, we beat Wolves in the 3rd round, Liverpool in the 4th, setting a new attendance record of 34,709, and then Villa in the 5th round. This was going to be our year, wasn't it?
We drew the reigning champions, Leeds Utd at home in the quarter finals. Went to PR for another attendance smashing record that still stands today. 0-0. Replay at Elland Rd was on a Tuesday, and would have meant taking a day off school. Dad went, me and my elder bro had to listen on the radio. Leeds equalised in the 90th minute. So, on to another replay, and the clubs agreed a neutral venue - Filbert St, Leicester on another Tuesday in March. Dad drove, picked me and my bro up from school and off we went. Another draw! So the clubs agreed to replay it again, at Filbert St on the Thursday 2 days later.
This time, I was told I couldn't go, school had to come first. I was 13, my bro who was 15 went with Dad leaving me at school. But that morning at school me and my mate Stephen couldn't think of anything but the 3rd replay, and then we found out that a supporters coach was stopping in Beccles where we were at school.
F@ck it, we thought, lets do it. We can meet my Dad in the ground, and get a lift back. So we bunked off school, 2 13 year olds, making our way from Beccles to Leicester with no knowledge of parents or anyone else.
Of course, the game has gone down in folklore, with one of the all time great goals from Clive Woods to send us into raptures as we knocked out the mighty Leeds. But I couldn't find my Dad and brother, couldn't get a call on the tannoy, so we had to get on the coach back. It dropped us at Blythburgh on the A12 at about 1:30 am. But that night in Suffolk was snow falling. We walked through the snow to my mates house in Walberswick, and instead of kipping there, I thought it was a good idea to borrow his bike. But as I left, the snow became a blizzard, and it was so heavy you couldn't tell where the road was. I opted to go via the A12 rather than over the Bailey bridge, but in places the snow was drifting and was over a foot deep. It was the eeriest thing I've ever experienced, cycling along the road to Southwold in virgin snow a foot deep in the midst of night. Eventually, I made it home, still in my school uniform with a blue and white scarf, at 3 am. Boy was I in trouble, but I am so glad I did it.

It was the eeriest thing I've ever experienced, cycling along the road to Southwold in virgin snow a foot deep in the midst of night. Eventually, I made it home, still in my school uniform with a blue and white scarf, at 3 am. Boy was I in trouble, but I am so glad I did it.

What a great thread.
Will enjoy reading these accounts and have a few myself to contribute.

I did that at Layer Road, the steward in the stand spoke to me and I said I’m a Towen fan,he said you’d better follow me then, and stuck me in the away end, which was nice.
