As long as he didn’t incite the violence, which from reports he didn’t, then this is bit of a non story for me. Anyway, he’ll only be replaced by a guy who went out on the eve of a match 6 months ago.

I’d say that’s about right. Hopefully both players are back for the 3rd test, & if not then the Pakistan series later this summer.

I strongly disagree with your opinion on Stokes losing the captaincy. The captain should be leading by example. There was a rule put in place to abide by a 12am curfew. Him and Atkinson both chose to ignore that, it makes no difference who started throwing fists about. If they had stuck to the rules, the situation wouldn't have happened. I love what Stokes has brought to international cricket, but he is clearly a liability andd shouldn't be near the captaincy, for me.

He was out after the curfew. The curfew which he as captain would have had some input into deciding upon. He’s a complete weapon.

Surely though the curfew isn’t enforced once a test match has finished? I get that it’s technically a test match day but the game had finished. Obviously none of us know the exact wording of the curfews.

| Ben Stokes on 10:17 - Jun 10 by Radlett_blue | The Ashes tour was a predictable disaster, not helped by off the field issues. They should have made an example of Brook (he's the white ball captain FFs), when he had a fight with a bouncer in a night club the night before a ODI. That's a disciplinary offence in any case, but isn't the captain supposed to set an example? Bethell & Tongue were with him, but Tongue wasn't playing the next day & I guess Bethell felt that as his captain was there, it was OK. Instead, the genius England management chose to hush up the incident, which makes it look much worse when it comes out. They seem to be frightened of upsetting the highly paid, centrally contracted players, lest they jump ship for the 20.20 circuses. Hence the need to reassure the public about discipline, so a midnight curfew is brought in. This might make sense on an overseas tour, but does it apply 365 days of the year? Stokes & Atkinson were in a night club AFTER an England win & no game for over a week. Unfortunately, they might feel the need to make an example of Stokes who is 35 years old and captain. It looks to me like he's coming to the end of his tether, both physically & mentally. Witness his terrible form with the bat & he's rarely fit to bowl. He's achieved enough to be allowed to leave on his own terms though, rather than under a cloud. The big problem is that the equally ill disciplined Brook is the next cab on the rank & I'm not convinced he's a good captain. Root as caretaker for me if Stokes wants to go & yes, let's find a dedicated red ball captain. |
The fact that it was the evening after the game finished is something I’d not considered previously and is a very fair point. It would be a dreadful shame if it ended like this after what Stokes has provided the English cricketing public with over the last decade and a bit. It does feel a bit like the end though, I see he has been dropped for the oval. I hope they persuade him to return for the final test of the series if not the remainder of the red ball summer. I wouldn’t give it to Root, albeit he’s the only obvious choice. He has been liberated as a batsmen by his return to the ranks and should not be reburdened with captaincy. Let’s enjoy him as a batsman while we still can, although he may choose to depart with his friend, Stokes. Nothing about Brook says captain. They may need to go left field and find a specialist captain to reset culture and go from there.

Well, Stokes & Atkinson suspended for the Oval which, given that Stokes is captain & was in favour of the curfew, he can hardly contest. Root as stand-in makes sense as giving it to recent miscreant Brook would have looked absurd. Time for Stokes to go away and reflect a little as to what he really wants to do (or should do) with the rest of his career as a battle-worn 35 year old.

But should it be? The match had officially ended? That’s my point. The BBC’s coverage of the England cricket during, & since, the Ashes has been applying by the way. I think they mention the Noosa trip during the ashes in every article they publish.

I agree it's idiotic to impose a curfew on adults when their next fixture wasn't for over a week. Who actually made up these rules? They were an over-reaction to the escapades down under. Do they apply for 365 days of the year?

There was that time when he clearly was going after his missus as well, but was sold as this is just us playfighting

I’m fairly certain one of the people who made up these rules or agreed with them was the England captain Ben Stokes.

Yes, Stokes agreed the rules & then broke them as Captain, which looks pretty dumb. Even dumber than having a rule like that. But I guess he's had a few beers with Atkinson & wanted to carry on.

Yes, it's a very well written piece & IMO Stokes was lucky not to be found guilty & go to jail. He clearly has some issues with alcohol & recent events would indicate that these remain, despite his advancing years.
