Ashton: “Giving someone their first managerial job in the PL is more difficult 11:32 - Jun 15 with 6134 viewsMatt_Netherlands

We’ll see about that.

No claiming def info, just heard a couple of names under discussion which very much fall into this bracket.

Conor Chaplin was unexpected

Indeed. Still less expected was Morsy as his assistant. I didnt think he'd ever be anything other than head honcho. Stroke of genius and I take back all my recent criticism of MA.

Poll: Right now, who would you rather have as Prime Minister?

It's true.

The main reason though is MA doesn't like having to deal with big personalities. It's ideal to get someone who feels grateful and that MA gave them the opportunity....it's the only way managers will put up with him for a season or two.

KK - no chance...way too experienced
Gerrard - thankfully no chance but he'd see through MA anyway

KK wont come here with his cancer diagnosis.

I think Tommy Elphick is a name we may be interested in. Highly rated coach, with lots of Premier League experience as a player and coach. He was meant to be announced as one of Iraola’s assistants at Liverpool but that hasn’t been made official yet. He recently rejected the Bristol City job as he wanted to go to Liverpool with Iraola, but a job of this level could tempt him.

No it isn't, it's exactly the same set up as appointing an experienced one, I know what he means of course. Would be very happy with an inexperienced/up and coming young manager. there's only one way you get experience in life. Neither of my two favourites have managed in the PL, though both are current managers, either way I'd be happy. Just no fossilised " usual suspects " please.

Phil jones

Or Ace, as we called him in the 60s/70s?

Ace, in the 60's-70's? that's non other than the nickname for Colin Viljoen, who I had the pleasure of watching play quite a bit. Classy, underrated midfielder with an eye for goal, including a hat-trick against Norwich in the best local derby I've ever seen at Carrow Road in 1968! However I don't think he'll be a candidate for the job as he's 78 in a few days time!

Indeed.

Back in those days, as I'm sure you remember, there were numerous colour magazines related to football. Football Monthly, Football Weekly, Shoot are three that come to mind. I cannot remember in which one it was, but there was a nice colour photo of our Colin, but the caption underneath said "Phil Jones"
I assume the picture editor misheard!

Haha yes indeed, I remember Shoot, first time I've heard it mentioned in decades! The other two, I just about remember. Wonder if anyone still has some old Roy Of The Rovers annuals :) One thing I'm confident about, CV wouldn't be out of place in today's PL.
