| Summer of 76 07:45 - Jun 23 with 1643 views | StokieBlue | This is a good article that highlights the differences in the summers we are seeing now and the famous one of 76 which is often cited on here as an argument against climate change: https://www.theguardian.com/uk Some points: "The heatwave, which began 50 years ago on Tuesday, brought 15 consecutive days where the peak temperature was above 32C. Half a century later and 32C no longer feels shocking." "While the 1976 heatwave was an extraordinary weather event, it took place in a much cooler world. In the past 50 years, average global temperatures have risen by about 1C. But for southern England, this number is between 3C and 4C." "Greenhouse gas emissions, primarily from burning fossil fuels, means British summers have already become hotter. Our new research shows that a comparable event to 1976 would be 3 degrees hotter today" "While ingrained in national memory, 1976 is the sixth warmest summer on record, with the summer of 2025 topping the rankings – for now.” "The Met Office has issued a new projection of what a heatwave like that of the 1976 summer could look like in the 2050s. Under this modelling, the UK could see a 14-day heatwave event with temperatures of over 40C for nine consecutive days. Temperatures could peak at 45C in England, 38C in Scotland, 41C in Wales and 30C in Northern Ireland." SB | |

As my teachers used to say, read the question fully before answering. Modern context of course applies, but does not change actual lived memories of the same time.

| Summer of 76 on 09:48 - Jun 23 by bsw72 | So your view based on 50 years of historic articles is a more valued opinion than someone who lived through it and offered their view from memories as a 12 year old at the time? I don’t believe GB was challenging anything you wrote just offering his lived experience as a child at that time. |
I was 14, living in Cambridge, and recall having to stay indoors (and wanting to) from 11-5ish, plus stories of crop failure (I guess, in Norfolk) on local TV news. Oh, and some local journo trying to fry an egg on his car bonnet. Even the lawns of the Cambridge colleges turned brown as watering was not permitted. That may well have been the first time I had known a temperature above 30. We certainly had a much cooler climate year-round in those days. I recall remnants of snowfall hanging around for 2-3 weeks, making cycling a bit awkward.

I must admit at that age you couldn’t have paid me to stay in. Then again, we lived by the seaside. It was beach during the day then 20 a side football at Clacton airfield after teatime.

Ok. At least it wasn’t an Ipswich fan that did it. But still.

My Mum was heavily pregnant with my sister that summer, she said it was horrendous! Also got a picture of my Dad stood on the Thames in 1963, which is quite incredible. Interesting to note that the top 5 hottest days recorded are all within the past 6 years.
