Most of the school holiday was spent bike riding for some reasons 6 of us cycled to Walton on the Naze one day 'cos it had a sandy beach', playing footie or p1ssing about in sea at Felixstowe. (my mates dad worked on the docks and somehow got hold of a large tyre which we decided would be fun to play in the sea with until we realised we had floated will out beyond the pier) TWTD's!! **sigh** Is what we have now hotter? Been trying to remember the name of that stuff. Would probably be disgusted with the taste now. What about Bazooka bubble gum? That was awful/great.

| Do any of you lot remember the summer of 1976? on 10:24 - Jun 24 by LegendofthePhoenix | I remember it well, did my first O Level in 76. Was at school in Beccles, and we had to wear blazers. During the hot weather teachers allowed us to take our blazers off. But one poor sod early in a double English lesson was chattering and told to go to the front of the class wearing his blazers, and told to kneel facing the front wall with his back to the class. He wasn’t allowed to rest his buttocks on his calves, had to kneel up straight. We were roasting sitting on chairs with our blazers off, while this lad had to suffer like that for an hour. Nowadays a teacher would be prosecuted for that. I still remember the name of the lad and teacher (who will be long dead). |
Sounds like we went to the same school, albeit I left in 68. Have to say ‘cruel and unusual’ punishments were very much the order of the day in my time too. Whacked across the behind with a plaited Bunsen burner tube is one that springs to mind. Can think of many incidents where, as you say, if they occurred today the teacher would rightly be prosecuted. WTTD?

I learnt to parachute solo at 17, all be it in 1979, with parachutes that resembled what was used in WW2 rather than the lightweight ones used today. At Ipswich airport.

The stunt was that we would all start complaining of the heat in turn, which led to loosening of ties and progressed to mass fainting that became all the more dramatic as every body tried to outdo eachother. . Cue, major panic as he could not tell if it was the result of heat or the chemistry experiments going on. Extra help was drafted in. Obviously the more savvy teachers soon cottoned on and we were in major trouble. Fun days.
| Do any of you lot remember the summer of 1976? on 14:57 - Jun 24 with 796 views | mellowblue | I remember it co-incoinciding with Dutch elm disesase which ravaged our treelines in a cruel way. The drought probably exacerbated it's impact. I remember spending the summer as a delivery van boy, (I was 14 then). Delivering and installing electrical goods to houses. Hot work, no air con in vehicles those days. But fun driving around watching the girls in their summer wear (and less). One houseowner had many cats and each cat had its own bowl. The smell of decomposing cat food was repulsive. Worst smell ever. We had to keep using excuses to go back to the van to avoid gagging. Every house was hot and the housewives were frazzled. All except one house which had a palpably strong sense of evil about it and was completely cold. It scared us big time. Could not wait to install the tv and get (the hell) out. | | | |

| Do any of you lot remember the summer of 1976? on 12:13 - Jun 24 by BloomBlue | I detest the usage of Fall instead of Autumn. However I have a confession to make about the usage of 'Fall'. I always forgot when the clocks change if they go back of forward, but then a few years ago I came across the USofA saying to help remember which way they go, Clocks spring forward and Fall back. I've tried using Autumn instead but it doesn't work ; Clocks spring forward and Autumn back. That's is the only piece of americanism I use, well OK occasionally I use Hamburger instead of Beefburger |
Although (and I knew this when I posted) 'fall' was being used in England before the use of 'autumn' became more common, and 'fall' only dates back to the Sixteenth century as a replacement for 'harvest'. wkj IN !

| Do any of you lot remember the summer of 1976? on 14:32 - Jun 24 by mellowblue | I learnt to parachute solo at 17, all be it in 1979, with parachutes that resembled what was used in WW2 rather than the lightweight ones used today. At Ipswich airport. |
I did that in I think 78. I had some mates in the TA and they said - on the upside we are doing a weekend on the lash on the south coast. Sounds good, thought I. The downside was I had to join the TA for the weekend because we were going parachuting. Ok, thought I. Should be fun. So in a stream of rubbish cars we trailed down to Lympne airfield. Only somebody’s hillman imp blew up on the A2 and we rescued the crew. We were greeted by a very angry army man, paraded (I’d borrowed the gear) shown to our WW2 vintage tents and told the evening was ours. And so it was. We went into the nearest town (I think Folkestone) and proceeded to have fun. We were woken, back at the airfield early. Very early. Few knew how we got back but we were destroyed. What a night. The army guys showed no mercy. It was a desperate day. By the afternoon ‘training’(like anyone took an interest) was done. We went to be kitted out and to collect chutes. The first issue I had was the bone dome. I needed a size bigger. A great big bloke disagreed, perched it on my head and slammed it down with the heel of his hand. ‘It fits!’ He shouted and many a constellation passed my eyes. And so to the aeroplane. It was a Cessna 172 with the back seats removed and a jump master. A rather fierce looking man with no humour. We went up in twos. Most of my chums went before me. One landed on the road, another on the hanger roof. One idiot forgot to turn into wind and hit the ground like a broken puppet. They were collecting people from everywhere. My turn. Errrr. I so wanted to be somewhere else. My mate was jumping before me. He was told to stand at the entrance by the mean looking jump master. He was waving an iron bar about having told us if you board the aeroplane, you are going out one way. So he stood there. The light went green. He had to shuffle out on a step, cling on to the wing strut and let go when the man barked. At about 3000 feet. I was scared. Big time. Trouble is, my mate had just disappeared so what could I do? I clambered out urged by the maniac with the iron bar - the aeroplane was further away than intended. But there I was. 3000ft up clinging on looking down. I let go. Now you were meant to shout 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004 check! Look up. If parachute not behaving, deploy reserve. I was recorded as shouting fckkkkkk as the aeroplane and its tail whirled past my feet. There was a massive flump as the chute deployed, turning me 180 degrees by the groin the right way up in a nanosecond. I already knew that parachute straps needed to be crushing tight and that’s what saved me having to swallow back my two best friends. Calm. It was so quiet, the world beneath. What a moment. But where was I? Well thanks to the flying exploits, I could ‘read’ the ground and picked up the airfield. I was miles off it. Now those old parachutes could be steered by closing on of the gaps at the back. So down I drifted. The second advantage of having flown a fair amount was judging height. I was heading right for the perimeter barbed wire. Not having that thought I and turned late. I landed in a heap (the ground hits you) 15 feet inside the fence. The NCO sweeping up the victims gave me an earful but I didn’t care. I’d done it. As an adrenaline rush I’ve done few things including crazy stuff in the mountains, but nothing will top that. Flying and gliding were no different to learning to drive, albeit more complicated. Looking at the earth from height with zilch between me an it was something else. Lympne was at that time the home of Red Devils who were training that day. We had a beer with them. None took the mick out of our shambolic efforts and it was a privilege to meet such skilled people. I remember spending a week at my Nan’s house in Leigh on Sea and having the excitement of a Rossi ice cream pretty much every day if I helped her with the housework. I was 9. There was also a plague of ladybirds if I remember rightly. Oh, and there was public information that stated that hydration was important and that a beer every day after work was a good way to do it….my father always maintained that beer was generally weaker in those days and that Double Diamond and Watney’s Red Barrel were pretty much water anyway.

What about The Party Seven ? Being the youngest of four children I can remember my Brothers having one of those kegs. I’ve just seen you can still buy that,it’s gone all posh now with a built in tap,in those days you had to pierce the keg with something. [Post edited 24 Jun 21:44]

Watneys party four or if the budget allowed party seven. Guaranteed gatecrasher entrance ticket. Only two downsides. It tasted like it’d been strained through a tramp’s trolleys and opening the B’stard thing was an exercise in futility and mayhem.
