The chosen? English, were they?
I always had you down as a Covenanter. The persecution of said Covs ended with the late 17c Glorious Revolution, of course.
Edit: as a matter of interest my knowledge is very limited but I do know that English / Scottish history is so intertwined over the centuries, it beggars belief. That’s why taking the p£ss over their rubbish football team is such fun. Mind you, England’s is pretty woeful. Oh well.

Yep, it was all about retaining religious freedoms, who governs what etc etc. I.e. not the king so yes, we’re natural allied of Cromwell. Shame that went pear shaped with the Restoration in 1660 and persecution followed.
There were essentially three civil wars between 1642 and 1651.
The Covenanters’ flags are very similar to today’s Scotland saltire one with the addition of slogans etc

A lot of bitterness on this thread.
Scotland lost. Get over it.

Bit weird that the best thing about Scotland at this WC (never was the abbreviation so apt btw) was their pre-match singing of their national anthem - in the absence of Italy, the absolute tops.

Surely singing one's own anthem with pride IS the most important thing for competitors and fans. Sport is just sport but a sense of identity is vital for any sentient human being.

I should hide your identity if I were you. Surely singing that anti-English dirge is the equivalent of wearing a big badge saying ‘I’ve got the clap’.
On a serious note, this could never be an anthem this a really moving piece of music. I first noticed it when it was played at Philip and the Queen’s funerals.

But for the Restoration, England might have mirrored Scotland in not celebrating Christmas Day which only became a public holiday in Scotland in 1958. Indeed, I remember growing up that the Old Firm match used to take place on Christmas Day.
It is presumably for this reason that the Scots place so much emphasis on celebrating Hogmanay.
As it is, with Scotland out, I'm now throwing my weight behind Canada, the land of my birth.

This was the version played at Prince Phillip's funeral (at Windsor Castle) and was particularly poignant as it was played as the piper walked into the distance and the music faded.
I have a particular soft spot for the pipes because my grandfather played them.

I think I understand it. I’ve been in Brussels when the Welsh came to town and the atmosphere was very different to being in an England crowd (which is far from as bad as the press often make out btw, from my limited experience). I get a similar vibe from the Scots.
It’s strange how people get quite negative about the Scots. It doesn’t really matter if they had a good time, does it? It doesn’t impact us.
It's 'pride without the entitlement' is the best way I can describe it.

Well actually they were going the other way. Not really, it was a lament for the battle of Flodden 1513 fought in Northumberland. The largest battle ever fought between the two countries involving about 60,000 men.
The lament is very old, dating back to the early 17c. It’s very haunting and very beautiful.
Edit: the battle was fought with artillery (including archers), but mainly pikes and halberds. The famed claymore sword was becoming outmoded at this point

No other instrument evokes such strong emotion. It's no coincidence that Scottish passion is accompanied by the pipes. A match made in the heavens above the heather and the lochs.

"Bagpipes did not originate in Scotland. Historians agree they trace back to the ancient Middle East and Mesopotamia over 2,000 years ago."
There's not another nation on earth which loves itself and promotes itself as Scotland. Amongst the heather and lochs are used syringes and empty Buckfast bottles.
And .... Scotch eggs come from England.

Why would any other nation want to promote itself as Scotland?

Is that relevant?
Of course, it's mainly down to Sir Walter Scott that items related to the Highlands (such as bagpipes, tartan and kilts) came to represent also the Lowlands but I think it is nice that Scotland has retained several distinct cultural items that are known throughout the World. There is also whisky and folk and fiddle music from all over Scotland.
And what country doesn't love itself or want to promote itself?

Poor you. A nasty foreigner. I’m my world you’d be deported for that. Don’t need your sort here….
Yes, had Cromwell’s son Richard not been such a wally, there may not have been a Restoration and Christmas might well not have been as it is now.

When we have our Remembrance services in the village we always have a piper and that always brings a tear to mine eyes.
