3399 on the season ticket waiting list yesterday.

That my friend is the price of success.

But the club still does a ballot system for tickets is that correct?

As a ST holder, I am not sure how it works exactly, but I do think there could be a consumer rights issue along the lines as nobody on that list, a list they are paying to be on, seems to be getting any of the drop offs and we seem to be reducing the number of ST holders? Am I wrong on that?

I have no problem with a list, but to be charging folk for it and not issuing anyone any ST's seems a little of a p ss take from the club. It could easily be decided on historic sales/attendance too, if it isn't already.

You didn’t need to directly pay to be on the list, you just needed to be a Blues member for 2 of the 3 seasons prior, and a current member, in order to sign up. Since it required a level of historic as well as current membership, few would have needed to pay anything to be eligible - only those who had been members in 23/24/25 and allowed it to lapse for 25/26 in fact.

Not really, more successful = more people wanting to watch - quite a simple concept.

I've never really understood that to be honest.

Surely if you're a Town fan you just want to watch Town.

We were down to 8000 season ticket holders 6 years ago.

Obviously success is what we want but I'd watch us in the conference just as much as the PL.

But you get different levels of dedication, you’re highly dedicated to which I applaud. I maybe have 80% of your dedication - which meant during some of the dross under Lambert/Cook etc there were times I’d favour spending my money on other entertainment/activites.
The numbers suggest many thousand others are the same as me - difference being not many would admit it like I do!

Be interested to know if you live locally?

Many ST holders travel from outside East Anglia which adds significant time and cost to watching Town.

With little hope and rubbish football served up under Marcus Evans, it's little wonder than many supporters found better things to do with their time and money.

I know it’s impossible to keep everyone happy, but it seems bonkers that someone could have been to every single home league game for the last three seasons buying individual tickets, and they are much further down the list than someone who has only ever been to one game.

That's a fair point and refreshingly honest. And I can't blame you really during the dross.

In a strange way though the difficult times were just as absorbing. Just for different reasons! But I do get it.

I know this might catch some strays but in that relegation season from the Championship, I saw the QPR home game early in the season.

After that, watching Ipswich (and paying decent money) was one of the last thing I wanted to do with my weekend!

Some people do have your attitude and they're the ones travelling up to Carlisle on a Tuesday night to watch us in the league cup.

However, most people want some enjoyment too.

Worth noting, at the start of the last PL season it was hard to get tickets for home games. Towards the end, say Feb onwards, there was a lot more available.

For the 20 years or so of having a season ticket I've lived a third in London, a third in Cambridgeshire and a third in Ipswich. Local now.

Totally appreciate that. There were many times on the A14 after an evening game where I used to think what am I doing!

But I still can't totally really get around the idea of if it's not successful I'd rather spend money elsewhere. But appreciate others would have felt that.

I had a season ticket for over 20 years, but sadly through Ill health I had to let it go.

You never know why people do stop going to football.

I wouldn’t mind going again next year sometime but I will never get a ticket now I guess.

I think what you say is fair, but everyone’s circumstances are different, as is their level of ‘commitment’. Distance, money, job requirements, own sporting commitments, family, you name it. But if the team is winning, human nature does mean you are more incentivised to go.

Through Duncan to the end of McCarthy’s time, we saw a lot of it. Having STs after all seater came in helped (always preferred standing) but it was always a ritual, a sporting routine, habit, fun despite the dross.

We dropped the STs for McCarthys last season primarily because his health was beginning to fail, but was that the whole reason? No. The football was dreadful, we could purchase tickets with falling crowds but there was a stench of futility and decline. I’d had enough.

I started going again in the League 2 period when Gamechanger arrived and domestic circumstance allowed. Renewed interest and curiosity. I then bought an ST because it was easy to do so and more convenient than buying match by match tickets. Sheer chance really - I could quite easily have missed out under different timings which I would have accepted as one of those things and gone on the waiting list.

So like you, I most certainly am not dedicated as plenty are. Everyone is different and thank goodness for that.

I’ve always felt 33,000 - 35,000 was the capacity required. I’m not sure that’s too far off, but capacity for people that have other commitments, better viewing points and getting children in (the future) means maybe 40,000 is more appropriate?

Agreed, I've been to places like Bury and Swindon and never had a problem getting away tickets, now all of a sudden because of circumstances I didn't get to many away games a few years back it's almost impossible to get away tickets other than a Tuesday night when you can't go due to work.

Those that sat through the Evans era with ST's ought to have double points!

That's all well and good, but poor owners, like Evans was, broadly, trade on that sort of loyalty when really it should get to the point where the support refuses to accept low standards and if that means staying home, so be it. It's better than being there and booing the team.

That doesn't make people any less of supporters. I did keep my ST through the dark times, but had he hung on I'd have been walking away too, because I do love Ipswich and I wasn't going to endorse that mans ownership any longer. Sometimes you have to show support for the club in a different way, thankfully between Blue Action and others making a stand and somewhat forcing Evans hand into selling we never got to that point.

Also a lot of our Ipswich-centric support doesn't appreciate how many of us travel to the games. Even the club doesn't. Those of us outside of the Town have often joked that a lot of Ipswich people in general tended not to bother go to games unless we were doing well. Thousands of us travel from Essex for home and away games and I'd hazard a guess there were more of us going during the Mick-era from outside of Ipswich than Ipswich itself.

Ipswich is a regional club.

I know they do - I was one for years! Used to train from London (Elstree in fact) and then train/drive from Cambridge. Dark days for most of them.

I take your point about poor ownership but there's the counter which is it's easy to support the team when things are going well, harder when it's not. Can't just walk away because we were struggling imo. To be honest, Evans could have been a lot lot worse. He was incompetent but he got priced out quickly and then couldn't see a way through. Agree about the importance of Blue Action during that time.

And Ipswich is a Suffolk club. Ipswich the county town. There's definitely a lot more getting on the train from London/Essex than there used to be. Which is fine, I get it, but the truth is that some of them wouldn't be if we hadn't suddenly come into money. I mean we were still only getting 20,000 or so after the takeover under Cook. Derby games didn't even sell out at points under Mick etc.

Town have a lot of support from all over (Europe as well!) for various factors but there's always a part of me that slightly bristles when you get geezer types who one suspects might have been at West Ham on another day. We are a Suffolk club..

Anyway the main thing is we are all Town supporters.

When I travelled from London I never once thought about giving up my ST. I'm more likely to now back in the homeland. Arf.

Like you I've had ST for over twenty years, by far the majority of that time living in London. The reason I may quit sooner rather than later is a) the general entitlement, anger and cluelessness emanating from fellow fans (not a unique thing to Town of course) and b) the money involved, not from an ethical perspective but rather a sporting one where clubs can't fairly compete.

The Yanks are doing their best to get their hooks in to make money. They will ruin the game as a sport, with our so called regulators (governments and governing bodies) at best inept but really simply corrupt and complicit.

I had a vision recently of US money makers getting involved in cricket and there being dance troupe, cheerleaders and fire eaters running all over the outfield after every over.

Excellent post and I really sympathise with that view.

I agree completely about the entitlement. For a lot of the fans attracted to the success, it feels as if they treat football like WWF wrestling. It's just an entertainment product and they want more money spent, more thrills and if it doesn't deliver they throw their toys out of the pram.

It's been a magical few years but the entitlement has been deeply depressing. I'll never forget the 'fans' at Wrexham away screaming 'your %¥$$' at Dara. I've seen a few dsgraceful performances in following Town and that didn't come anywhere near.

Also agree about the direction of the game. The US want sports entertainment and not a sporting culture.

It's wrong that teams like us and Forest can never hope to win the league ever again.

As someone who has travelled in from both ends of Essex, we've always had a lot of supporters jumping from Chelmsford, Witham, Braintree, Kelvedon, Tey, Colchester and Manningtree, the other end Audley End, then into Cambridgeshire we have a lot travelling from Cambridge, Ely and then obviously then once into Suffolk. I'd say we had a lot more travelling in from the wider region than people coming from the Town during those dark days by far. I do feel the wider support gets ignored, and the club started hiding under Evans and doing very little outreach outside of Ipswich. It's not doing as much as it could be to get younger generations from the wider area into the club, mostly due to the lack of availability, so kids will support Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea instead.

I disagree though, Ipswich is a regional club with a wide base and always has been. Before the Londoners moved in, aside from the glory hunting cretins we were easily the best supported team right across the east. We even had a lot in Norfolk pre 90s!
