Hate them. Is there a more classless, despicable bunch of w@nkers? Rattin in 66, paid off the Chile goalkeeper in 78, cheating cunit Maradona in 86, cheating cunit Maradona in 90, Simeoni in 98, Martinez in the penalty shoot-out in 22.

I'm sure I've missed out some others. Hate them, hate them, hate them.

Anyone agree? Or am I the only one?

Edited: to make clear that I am talking about the Argentina football team. Apologies if this wasn't clear from my OP.

What did they do wrong just now?

Kinda admire how they dug deep when all looked lost.

RIP Sir Bobby

Anything that keeps Messi in the competition is fine by me. He’s a joy to watch. He was heavy and slow in 2022 after coming into the tournament off the back of an injury, but he’s rolling back the years this time. I’ll always remember this tournament as the ones when the greats showed up.

Think it's a generation thing to a degree. People my age were kids when we had a war with them, that sort of thing sticks with you.

But that said I drew them in my local pub's sweepstake so feel a bit torn. Ideal scenario we beat them in the semi and then spank the Frog eaters, whilst Argentina win the 3rd/4th thing and I pick up 50 golden nuggets.

Yeah, there’s a bit of extra spice there isn’t there. 1982. I was 10 and in the final year of primary. We called it 4th year then; Mr Woodward’s class at Britannia Primary. I remember the worry about the war, but I remember a lovely summer and endless afternoons of playing softball in school even more. Mr Woodward literally changed my life. Got me interested in geography, which went on to become a career, but also made school enjoyable with a silly amount of sport most afternoons. But we worked hard in the mornings. Work hard/play hard became a thing that year and I’ll forever be grateful to him.

Germany.

The trouble with that is that it tends to be a one-sided thing with Germany not particularly caring about England. With them, they tend to look towards Holland for rivalry.

Think with Argentina there’s bad feeling towards England.

Agree since hand of sod. Not just because he cheated, but because he revelled in winning by cheating, and flaunted that. Horrible, unscrupulous man, no dignity.

And in the same match an English defender deliberately elbowed Maradona in the face. A cowardly attack which is the very definition of cheating - but not a lot of people mention that.

There is absolutely no way that he thought that he would have got away with it - if the officials had seen it, he would have just walked off as it was so blatant.

But once given he (and all other professional footballers) would’ve claimed the goal.

Falklands

For me it's nothing to do with the Falklands conflict. The source of my loathing for them emanates with Maradona in 86.

This in a nutshell. He was classless. Happened again in the last world cup with their gesturing towards the France bench. If England can't beat them, I hope the French are able to stick it up them.

They did it in the SF v Belguim but this time the officials spotted it. Also in the 1990 QF v. Yugoslavia they tried handling into the net.

Yes - of all nations, Argentina are the country which in terms of footballing rivalry I dislike the most. However, I do also recognise how hypocritical football fans are towards cheating - and I’m taking in general rather than at any individual poster.

Maradona- cheater.
Michael Owen - proper dive against them in 2002 to win a penalty…yeah, that’s fine.

I've always found German/British relationships to be on the main pretty cordial in recent years, both sides taking the mickey without taking offence.

The Dutch hate the Sausage munchers with a passion though and my Polish sister-in-law is torn between her who she dislikes more between the Germans or the Russians.

Just reminded me how much I detest them. Always the same whenever they get a spawny win. I don't have the same depth of feeling with any other country, even Scotland. Perhaps I need to see a shrink!

They used to be bad I guess, but nowadays almost every nation employs the dark arts.
