The state hasn’t proved trustworthy with more power though - designating protesters as terrorists, removal of (some) jury trials, compulsory ID, attempting to cancel local elections. How can we ensure that more power to the state isn’t a route into totalitarianism? In my opinion rejoining the EU would be a start, they could potentially overrule abuses.
Just a few thoughts as someone concerned with the erosion of our civil liberties, and scepticism around state overreach. |
It hasn't I agree but that's down to this Labour government. The Labour right are authoritarianism personified.
Rejoining the EU is political suicide.

I'm not trying to be a dick. I find it quite sad really. You clearly have a curious mind, you just seem to have latched onto something that you either don't fully understand, or you cannot properly articulate.

That's a centrist government for you. Or the illiberal liberals. 
As it is, it is the ECHR, not the EU, which is the safeguard of our rights but governments such as the current one will push things as much as they can.
As regards a reimagining of state power, I imagine jasondozell is getting at things like the fact that the nationalised energy industry produced the first civil nuclear programme in the World at very little cost, whereas the privatised one has to look to the French to build power stations at exorbitant cost.
Sadly, I think privatisation has produced what amounts to Humpty Dumpty, and I am not sure if it can ever be put together again.
Finally it is interesting to note, in connection with Burnham's proposals to devolve money and power to the regions, that Private Eye points out, with the abolition of the Audit Commission in 2015, that there is no longer central oversight, thus resulting in the misuse of vast amounts of public money at the Teeside Freeport. I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. He’s attacking posters many of who are likely to have similar views, but can’t quite articulate why in clear terms like you’ve just done. And then throws the ‘centrist dad’ thing into the mix for good measure, which sounds like something g out of a cultist manual.
I’m a bit confused by the whole thread tbh, as I suspect most of the people arguing here will understand that politics in recent decades isn’t working for most people and are pretty pissed off with seeing public money stripped out of the system/country to fill the coffers of companies who haven’t delivered and who aren’t safeguarding our assets (water being the obvious one, but it’s a constant theme).
And then it’s a crime to laugh at a comedy creation apparently, when that by-election is going to do nothing to even start to address the underlying problems that are leaving people feeling frustrated/forgotten, etc.
Fills time though I suppose! Right, back to my power washing to use up some more of our precious water (I do actually feel bad about that, but the Mrs’ ire at me not doing jobs is worse!). |  |
