Tried but missed the boat.
True story - saw it when I was a 14 year old on a family holiday in Normandy. It's in French (Bloody French) and there was a running commentary by each section...
So this one guy gets a lot of mentions - "Guillaume" - I know my Battle of Hasting history but never heard of this bloke. We do the whole thing and I finally ask my Dad (A History teacher) - "So who is this Guillaume bloke then?"

I was going on the basis that as Sir Terry Butcher deliberately 'buried' him in the pitch on that Sky Sports thingy, he would strictly be classified as treasure trove rather than as an abandoned piece of low grade material that had never been valued by anyone except some hard up peasants who had not a silver pot to call their own.
I would concede that the latter is probably a more accurate description of this item if it came down to a claim in court. | |

There is no academic concencus around it's place of origin or original owner. Even if it was made in Wessex, it's likely it was a commission from a french abbey, so a very legal transaction that has no need to be undone.
The Benin Bronzes etc are a clear case of colonial theft, and not only that there W many if them sitting in boxes in regional museum stores (including a some in Ipswich, not sure if they've been returned though) rather than proudly on display in their homeland's purpose built museum.
I'll probably go and see the Tapestry at the British museum, but it's not something we have legal claim over. |  |

William 1st was a bit of a piece of work too - as the north found out after one rebellion too many. Still, not many people’s body explodes in church. His did. He died in 1087 in Rouen. His body was stuffed into a coffin in a concrete sarcophagus made some years before and transported to Caen.
The problem was that William had tucked into too many pies, KFCs and McDonalds and had put on a few pounds, hence having to wedge him in. The real trouble was decay meant the body expanded with gases and when plonked in the cathedral it erupted.
It was the fastest service ever. The congregation needed more than a handkerchief to get through that. Gagging and vomiting from the stench, most legged it. | | | |

The Sutton Hoo hoard on display at Hoo actually is for the most part fake, the real stuff is in The British Museum:
