I've just sent in my notice to retire from work 11:07 - Jul 13 with 7737 views

Probably the most difficult decision I've ever made. The constant doubt about whether I can afford it is causing me all sorts of anxiety.
Anyone else had these doubts and can give me some positive thoughts? I haven't paid off my mortgage so will have to work something out there, but, eventually, I plan to travel for a few months, or possibly years, before moving somewhere cheaper than Norway.
My head is all over the place right now.

Best advice I can give you is look forward, not back. Second guessing a decision that’s been made is exhausting, you’ve made it and you have at least part of a plan for enjoying the next phase of your life and put it into practice.

Yeah, Madeira was on my list, but from what I can see, affordable housing is virtually non existent for my budget.

Best decision you could make as time is precious as we get older. I'm sixty five and about 6 or 7 yrs ago I decided to work roughly 25 hours so I work 5 days a fortnight some long days but gives me the other nine days to do what I want whether with my other half or grandkids or the football.
In 18 months I'm done never no how long we have.
Work has always been do it to do what u can and pay ur way not a I want or need to be there so enjoy time.

I left my job of 34 years this February. Handing in my notice 3 months previously was more cathartic than I thought it would be.
I loved my job but I knew it was the right time.
I now work 3 days a week in a job so far removed from my previous job and I really enjoy it.
The money isn't great but added to my pension it's OK.
I have to say that I love this new phase of my life.
Go grab it mate.

All the best to you. It’s possibly a great opportunity to do your travel plans and all the other stuff that we all put off for one reason or another, scary but exciting in equal measure.
A friend of mine took the chance five years ago, packed up their jobs and moved to rural Spain and him and his partner have never been happier. They both do part time work out there and go on frequent road trips around Europe as life is much more laid back and cheaper.

I can't speak from experience, but I dare say you'll do well to find many people who utter the words 'I wish I'd retired later' on their death beds. Of course the practical realities are real, and I don't mean to trivialise your reservations.

mentally once you start thinking of retirement, then in your head it is time to go. It is great the decision is in your hands. So many are marginalized and basically forced to retire.

I spent a bit of time with a financial adviser before I made the decision and it helped me set things up in a way that made it possible. Horses for courses though and you don’t need to do that of course.

I don’t think you’ll regret it. What’s the worse that can happen? You’ll have a great time travelling that you’ll never forget and if in the worst case scenario it looks like money is going to eventually run out you can always find a bit of work. As long as you’ve got your health and enough money to enjoy life a bit, that’s all that matters.

Hope it goes well. When it comes to the work, keep an open mind about going in different directions - especially if you can afford to do something interesting, maybe part-time, as a top-up.

I'm lucky in the sense that my pensions are defined benefits, so it's purely doubts about the affordability of retirement.
Work has been stressful the last couple of years so my decision was was more to do with health than wealth.

I'm in 100% the same position.
Yet to give notice but want to go end March 27.

I am trying to quite literally put my house in order to avoid curved ball major expense in retirement.
I am lucky in that through luck and some good judgement (certainly in the last decade) I have had company schemes to fund.
I assume you have taken Financial Advice? If not do it.
I am at the point where I am sick of the procrastination and the studying of spreadsheets. I am just going to say F*** it and do it.
I am convinced that 60-70 is the decade when you can still perhaps rely on health.
With each year I continue into that time is 10% of the healthy time I have left. In truth and at the end of the day this is the only question worth answering.

72 now gave up as my business suffered in covid . Carried on after and just working doing fun things sometimes for money sometimes for free.
Good private and state pension from my early uk employments keep me in money plus a working wife.
Enjoying life with work that's fun and foreign trips when I want a travel break. Third one this year to Australia next week plus two to Japan earlier.
Take a chance recover and then enjoy yourself.
Tip I got was the way to live a long healthy life is to...... keep breathing.

Congrats.

You will be free. I often think people vastly overestimate the amount of money they need to retire. People seem to imagine a life of constant holidays and other expenses. There are some decent Youtube videos on retiring early/frugally. One man moved to Spain, bought an apartment and now lives on about 1000 EUR a month.

Good luck. I doubt you will look back. As I get older I think the saying about the best things in life being free is more and more true.

I more or less retired at fifty eight and was a little way (but not a long way) off being financially comfortable, but the relief from not having to deal with difficult work colleagues was a very palpable health benefit. Thirteen years on I am better off and possibly more healthy too, it's a question of looking after those pension pots in my case and also keeping active.

I think I am right in saying you are a qualified paramedic ? I suspect you have good opportunities to use that skill away from Norway, either in paid or voluntary employment - and than can be tied in with your travel plans. For myself, I travel extensively (currently planning a trip to Norway but looking at accommodation costs I am wondering whether the more affordable option is to travel towards Kirkenes via Sweden...) and find that travelling light and finding that dorms and coach travel can be as comfortable as en-suite rooms and car hire as well as way more cost effective with the added bonus of a lot less lonely. That being said, I did travel through Colombia for a month last year and never paid more than forty quid a night (including cooked breakfast) in hotels that were quite upmarket...and then there was the hiring of teh Toyota Hilux in Namibia the previous year.

Hoping it works out as well for you as it has done for me.

He decided he was retiring at 55 and they were just going to find a way to make it work. Their story has been interesting. Started off thinking of moving to France. Their plan has changed many times which has been very interesting to see.

Their plan actually worries me, on their behalf. They seem to have quite a bit of bad luck and a very limited budget. I hope it works out for them though.

Congratulations. I did it last year. Finances are always a concern, it's boring but sit down with a piece of paper or speak to a financial adviser.

The thing I found the hardest was not having a routine, when you have been getting up and going to the office for 40 years to suddenly stop is very strange. I still feel a bit of guilt if I go out mid week.

I do a bit of freelance work now to top up my pension and also it helps stop me being on here all night and day.
