Back in the day Seb Coe, Steve Ovett, Steve Cram, Liz McColgan, Sally Gunnell even Peter Elliott were all household names. Same with other sports as well, only people actually into that sport know who they are. Have we got too obsessed with football maybe?

Same with other sports as well, only people actually into that sport know who they are. Have we got too obsessed with football maybe?


Rugby, football and athletics are the only sports I like to watch but it is certainly the case that athletics in this country has waned in terms of publicity and support, which is a great shame given we still produce world class athletes who are more successful than our football teams.

It is a real shame, not least because I think the athletics commentators and pundits are far and away the best of all the sports in this country.

Same. First time I've been to the athletics. It was absolutely brilliant.

Well done and Josh. Incredible effort and worth the 8 months of training for that one effort.

Final sentence of your first paragraph doesn’t make sense, you’re comparing individual athletes to a team. Overall at the Olympics, we (GB in this case) have finished 7th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 4th at the last five Olympics, against which England’s recent record in major tournaments is fairly similar (SF, F, QF, F, SF)

You also seem to be implying that people should only care more about things that were successful in, which is ridiculous

Athletics is an individual sport and, given we still produce World champions (something we don't do in football), I was merely saying it is a shame that its popularity has waned, and this in response to a point made in the post I was replying to.

And I can't see how you can come to the conclusion you do in your second paragraph from what I said.

Indeed, if I cared more about things that were successful, I wouldn't have been an Ipswich fan for all these years.

Don’t think I’ve overanalysed it, I just think it’s a nonsense comparison. Of course we still have some world class athletes as there are 100’s of different disciplines, we also have a number of them in which we’re rubbish (presumably you aren’t bemoaning the lack of interest in Greco-Roman Wrestling though)

Going down the individual route there is also more opportunity, this thread comes off the back of a Diamond League event which I guess could loosely be compared to the domestic season (and guess which country the current World Champions are from…)

I think rivalries gave it the human interest dimension and made it more suitable for prime time tv viewing, Ovett and Coe swapping records, then Cram and Elliott coming on the scene. I was very much an Ovett fan. Athletics then rode the wave for a while before fading to olympic interesest once every 4 years for most people. I would not necessarily blame football, more to do with the BBC giving up competing for sports coverage.
