Difference in drug testing in football/cycling 13:05 - Jul 19 with 1413 viewsBelsteadCav

It’s come out since 2023 Ronaldo has only been tested 13 times

Messi on the other hand hasn’t been tested once, not once.

Meanwhile in the TDF the yellow jersey wearer is tested every day

Plus Vingegaard was tested at 2am last night. Pogacar ( probably the best we’ve ever seen )was tested at 5am.

Can you imagine the night before a World Cup final, And they turn up at 2am or 5am to the Argentina hotel,
Would never happen.

Where there’s money on sport, there are drug cheats. Footballers are hardly tested, I find that totally bizarre

I totally get that

But to think the top footballers aren’t cheating is very naive.

You just want it to be true. You have no evidence.

Highly likely given the rewards. I doubt a Messi is though, as he can hardly run! Unless there’s a drug that enhances skill.

It was endemic in cycling though, they had to wipe about 39 years worh of results due to the sheer numbers. I'm not saying that is or isnt happening in football but cycling forces itself to adopt that regimin due to the fact that most of the field was cheating at one point

No testing no evidence

One season Mark Cavendish was tested 52 times!!!

52!!!

I bet footballers don’t get that much in their 10/15 year career

cyclists need to reach physical thresholds that footballers never ever approach. Footballers really should not need them, though there were strong rumours of Barca, Real footballers and Nadal being linked to the Operation Puerto cycling drugs bust of 2006. The night time testing of pro cyclists is disgusting. Should consider striking on the issue.

Cycling had a problem which needed to be stamped out. There is no widespread belief or reason to think that football has the same problem.

Testing is random and can happen at any time. If it was an issue we would hear of a lot more bans. It would be impossible for players to constantly get away with it.

Cyclist's also have blood passports so the authorities can see any drug use out of competition as well as during the season, because in training is where drug use would be much more beneficial. It is worth pointing out that the riders were the one's pushing for more drug testing, asking why there were no drug tests during pre Tour de France training camps.
I would like to see a blood drug test completed on all members of the matchday squad of every team in the PL next season, but that would never happen. In football the pay of top players is enormous, where pace, stamina and recovery are vital, all these are easily available using performance enhancing drugs.
The fact that no PL players have failed a drug test that I can remember is a major red flag that testing needs to be upped massively, injuries healing very quickly is another red flag.
I am saying this as a former amateur 70's and 80's racing cyclist, when performance enhancing drug use was wide spread and the pro riders wanted it to stay that way.
I now believe Cycling to be one, if not the cleanest sports around, this is because the riders want to keep it clean, the fact they still find drug cheats is a very good sign that testing is working. The FA and PL could wipe out drink driving over night with their policy of no testing means no failures, means on one is drink driving.

So pace, power and physical strength, as well as recovery from effort and injury is not important in football then?

Remember when Rio was caught

The Premier league will never let that happen again

Can you imagine what micro dosing EPO would do to the fitness of a top Footballer

Especially if they were playing Saturday Tuesday Saturday

I do know that testing in cycling is extensive, Mark Cavendish would have been tested every day he was leading the points competition in the TDF as would a random selection of his lead out team as well.

EPO use would be a massive boost for footballers, no muscle bulk, just millions more oxygen carrying red blood cells, but by not looking for it's use opens up an easy avenue for abuse by the players.

I would like to point out once again that it was the riders that wanted the change, while they were happy to continue doping the authorities were happy to let it continue. It was not the other way round!

useful obviously, but not as critically useful as in pro cycling. doping (if still prevalent) has moved on from EPO. Far too easy to detect. Keeping it secret in football would be almost impossible. Just too many people involved.

I don't know much about the testing regime in football, but was it not claimed in recent years that certain players seemed to be so 'injury prone' because they had their issues, and being on the injury list was one way of being exempted from drug tests?

It certainly needs to be a lot tougher, though. Random visits to training grounds, with mandatory testing of all players present.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Footballers have to do the same whereabouts bits as everyone in other sports like cycling and athletics - ie say every day where they will be for at least an hour of the day

There were plenty of accusations about Messi and that Barcelona team.

Rafa Nadal doesn’t get a mention in the above but his name was widely spoken of in connection to Dr Fuentes as well.

There were no accusations against Messi. Don't link Messi to that. Fuentes and Operation Puerto was pre-Messi first team Barcelona. Messi was given hgh as a youngster as a doctor prescribed treatment as he was so small, but that is as far as it goes. The clients all had nicknames to disguise themselves. E.g one prominent cyclist was known as his dog's name, Piti. That cycle rider was Alejandro Valverde.
