In 1978, we booked Paper Lace for our university hall of residence Christmas ball.

Suggs, a guest at a wedding I attended, took to the stage and sang a few Madness songs when the lead singer of the wedding band was late.

When he eventually arrived, he took to the stage and said "How can I follow that?"

i thought of another one

Professor Brian Cox (then of pop band d:ream) caught me fingering a girl back stage at a student summer ball in 1996.

he said to us when walking past (in a very manchunian accent) "alright?"

yes. yes she was.

Was on a wildlife rescue in Hyde Park, and a little yappy dog came running through a flock of Egyptian Geese which included the one I was trying to catch, scaring them all away; when the owner came to retrieve the dog, it was Claudia Winkleman (think that makes the hat-trick of celebrities that have apologised to me - so far...)

Did you ask him what was his favourite cheese?

And also, when you say ‘backstage’ - how was this in relation to the stage itself? Do you have an MS Paint diagram?

Had a road rage incident with Herbie Hide on the Norwich ring road in the early 90,s.

He was driving a car with a shockingly bad mural of a boxer on the bonnet with the words Dancing Destroyer wrote underneath it. I took the p1ss, he took it badly

I was in a bar in Oulton Broad when he came in with his cronies.

Someone was pushing past me to get to the bar and I turned around to tell them to f off when I was met with his torso.....I looked up, smiled and offered him my place at the bar.....

That's a long time ago now!

About 15-20 years! Might have been the night I dislocated my knee cap and haven't been able to play since!

Well if we're going on sightings only, I have been alone in lifts, no communication with -

Dennis Healey (Queen's Hotel, Leeds, where my parents were overnighting).

Robin Day (visiting his publishers in London where I was working as a temp sec).

and together with my job interviewer -

Tim Piggott-Smith (National Theatre, London).

Bumped into Christopher Biggins in Gateway, Torpoint branch in the early 90’s (he was walking in, I was walking out). Greeted him with a cheery ‘Alright Lukewarm’ thinking he would enjoy the recognition of both him and his character in Porridge, but he looked at me if I was an utter C**t…

Went to same school as Hannah Spearitt from S Club.

Went to same college as Myleene Klass from Hearsay.

Was at Sheff Uni with Simon Kendall (Howard K's son). Unsurprisingly he is a very good footballer.

Worked in a hotel in Gorleston on sea, and my boss was Jeremy Goss' wife. She is a really nice lady tbf.

Saw Nichola from big brother series 1 in an alleyway near my house a couple of years after her fame.

Have a water bottle from an elite Spanish athlete from the London marathon in 2017. Can't recall his name.

Met Ted (bass player i think) from Mumford and sons at a swanky photography exhibition in Shoreditch, that my wife wanted to go to. He was a nice guy and quite funny tbf.

You reminded me - had similar from Janet Street Porter, next to me in village post office in North Yorkshire - told her I really enjoyed her radio programmes - she gave me the evils by way of reply!

Someone later said she hated being recognised. I thought it rather goes with the territory.

Sold some plants to Cleo Laine and Johnny Dankworth.

Same for Rick Wakeman and ended up tending his garden for five years.

Realised after the event several years ago that I’d shared a cigarette and had a chinwag with Johnny Depp in a garden centre car park 🤷🏻‍♂️

Also priced up a gardening job for Amanda Donahue not realising who she was at the time. Didn’t get the job either.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

I played Indoor Cricket in the same team as Alan Sunderland in the days when he ran the Halberd Inn. Richard Ayoade used to play for Martlesham Cricket Club, who I played for 20+ years too.
