'It added that in its own poll, the majority of millionaires wanted a higher tax on themselves.

"There are a few people left with outdated economic thinking and few others desperate to hold onto every penny they can... Those that can't see past the end of their own self interest have no place in designing a Britain for the future," the letter said.
'

It's often the money-obsessed who are trying to claw their way up who have an anti-social, visceral aversion to fair, beneficial taxation.

Sh!t response from Badenoch.

how do you know they haven't? if they'd admitted to it, they'd be accused of being "performative"!

Looool - seriously?!

If you cal yourself “the patriotic millionaires” and lobby for change then I think in the interests of transparency, we all have a right to know just how patriotic they are.

Otherwise, something absolutely ludicrous could happen like - hmm, just of the top of my head:

You’d get a group of ego centric celebrities, lobbying for a tax that is highly disputed whether it will work or not, and that they know is unlikely to ever be implemented, just to profit and get some good PR out of the exercise.

Of course that’s very far fetched I realise and could never be the case…

Will they be happy when any tax raised merely goes some of the way to filling the black hole in defence spending?

making no judgements on that lot.

all i'm saying is if you're mega-rich and you'd leave your country rather than pay a piddling amount more in tax, i'd say that makes you very anti-patriotic!

Perhaps they should introduce a voluntary higher rate

Because that gives ready made excuses for the selfish not to contribute, and for the country not to take responsibility for itself.

The solution is always the same; more tax. More more ever more. These people have no imagination they only understand growing the governments income. We pay more tax than ever in modern history. But muh covid! Muh financial crash 2008!
Old thinking again and again and again.

old thinking is that you can get defence/a pension/healthcare/social care without paying enough tax.

hence the country borrows instead and is in debt.

new thinking would be to stop being so childish and actually pay for it!

There literally is. You can pay more tax.

They need to have specific donation pages for the NHS and the armed forces.

I don't mind paying tax but paying extra tax to the government to spend on whatever they want? No thanks.

You sound like one of those Reform MPs that was trotted out to do the media rounds and twisted themselves up in knots trying to defend and justify why Farage called a bi-election!

The answer as to why they don't pay into the voluntary facility is staring you and all of us right in the face man!

I suspect you think that tax is fundamentally a rude word / bad thing / abomination / taking my money.

Talk about no imagination.

What's so imaginative about your position of simply wanting people to pay more tax?

*by-election - I doubt Farridge would call a bi-election.

I can't quite work out what your post means, to be honest, but if it helps I'm saying that the system needs to share the benefits of wealth creation across all of its layers in a better way that benefits the whole system (and protects the external environment), and that this should be hard-wired into the system, and not optional. For the sake of the whole system. Including you. Including me. Including everyone.

You have terrible instincts and suspect wrong as so often. I’m not against tax. I am against ever rising levels of tax to compensate for a lack of imagination and or backbone from politicians and the elite commentariat. Nobody ever looks at for eg defence spending and says Hhmm that’s weird, we are spending billions and billions on tank contracts and yet…no tanks. We are spending billions and billions on a welfare state conceived against a background of the workhouse poverty emphysema and a very few years of average retirement while people are living longer than ever.
And the solution of Lineker et al which you endorse? Let’s give the proven-useless political class EVEN MORE MONEY to waste.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Bit of both.

What I’m saying is you’re making excuses as for why the people you’re championing don’t use the voluntary payment facility. When the reason they don’t use it is abundantly obvious to anyone.

It’s good PR for them - if they genuinely believed what they were saying though they’d be paying into the voluntary scheme while lobbying for change at the same time.

I'm saying your looking at it from completely the wrong angle. It's not about judging individuals on what they are or are not volunteering to do - that's making it personal about them and about you, petty, turning into an ego-driven thing - it's about adopting a compulsory fair system that creates a healthy society.

Ahhhh…quelle suprise

Here’s the real reason why someone doesn’t like him and will never forgive….

Maybe if he’d blacked up and made life intolerable for a footballer ‘of colour’ or just said he’d like to see immigrants in boats machine gunned in the Channel he’d be cut far more slack…..

Rank hypocrisy coupled with selective tolerance, rooted solely in self-interest is never a good look regardless of whether you’re England’s second best ever striker or some self-important laddie on a football forum.

I had a peep to see what was being said- quelle surprise, indeed.

As I say, when people have a poor opinion of Lineker, it's a great barometer.

Almost like some of us are working regular jobs paying a higher effective tax rate than someone earning over £1m per year that went to court over a tax bill.

Shocking stuff.
