Ultimately, it is the board that decided to keep Key in the job after the Ashes debacle so you are right! It's a mess from the top down.

Feels like an appalling decision, and a shocking indictment of the state of English cricket that Root appears to be the only/best option for the captaincy.
Given that he himself has admitted how much he struggled with the captaincy, and how much that was reflected in his on-field performance, it feels like a colossal act of cricketing self-harm to put him back in that role at a point where he's playing some of the best cricket of his career. |  |

Key is trying to salvage his own skin, a better operator would accept that they are not the right person for the job.
The first 12 to 18 months of Bazball were amazing, confidence was reignited, but it was unsustainable and as younger guys have come in who need more input and coaching that they just haven recieved England have floundered. Root is the best bat we have ever had whilst on a individual level he has achieved so much we have squandered his peak years and its shameful.
But Keysey is a good bloke, face fits, one of the boys and that's far more important to the ECB. | |

Stuart Broad was saying that Flower was obviously the favourite but the fact he turned it down clearly means that Key hadn't done his homework before the Mcullum decision.

Root has only been pressurised into doing the job because it means that they won't otherwise feel the need to make Brook captain for all 3 formats, which would be insane (and I think McCullum was strongly against). We also don't have a Test coach yet either so Root as a stop-gap seems the least bad decision. The "plan" must be that a new coach comes in & he comes up with his idea of a new captain. There will be a breathing space until England go to South Africa in December. |  |

Idk if there was a falling out but it was clearly more than just Baz. Stokes has not helped himself at times. Was nightclub incident dealt with heavy handedly? Perhaps, but was done so in the context of some members of the squad treating the Ashes like they were on a gap year.

Stokes is 35 years old & his body isn't going to be up to the job of playing Test all rounder for much longer so this isn't a bad time to go. I doubt he's enjoyed the stress & scrutiny that goes with being England captain so I guess he's been thinking about this for a while. | |
