| Norfolk based blues- advice and recommendations please 11:10 - Jul 27 with 3265 views | BlueandTruesince82 | Some of you may recall I posted a short while back about potentially moving back to Norfolk. Whilst i's and t's still need to be dotted and crossed it looks like it is now a goer and I'm just waiting for official offer confirmation. With that in mind I'm thinking about where to base myself ans welcome any reccomemdations. The office will be east of the city and so I'm looking towards the east side of the county. Current thoughts include Porringland, ludham, Acle, Bloefiele and South Walsham. Needless to say I'll need to book some time off and refamilliarise myself with the area. Main things to consider. 1. The cat, somewhere where the traffic isnt too busy, of course everywhere will have its busier and quieter roads 2. Commute, office to be Broadland business park. I dont mind anything up to 35 or 40 mins but wary that traffic into Norwich can be a nightmare. 3. Decent local pub, I'm moving on my own I have a couple of friends still in the area and a few old ones I can look up but would like a community feel where I might meet new people. Any thoughts on the areas I'm considering and any suggestions for any i have missed? As an aside I grew up near Wymondham so would look atthwt side of the city too but think I'm setting myself up for a brutal commute. Thanks all in advance B and T | |

Thats a great help ty. Re Acle, is the acle straight as dangerous as ever? As an aside (purely due to seeing a lovely house there) is Southreps asking for too much for a commute? Think it probably is but would leave me lovely and close to the coast. Also any thoughts on Stallham?

Reddham is lovely - on the train, has 3 pubs (last time I checked) and for some reason isn't crazy expensive. Also nice for being half way between Norwich and the coast. The people of reedham accepted me and my dad drinking in their boozers too - one posh sounding guy in a wheelchair and one laaandaner -we made good drinking buddies. 20 min drive to the east edge of Norwich.

Somw lovely houses on rightmove in Old Catton but they come with pokey garden and seem to be on the main road but beautifully updated. If I can find the right property there its definitely on the list

Yes, but there are plans to make changes. It is a bit overstated though. I travelled to and from Great Yarmouth and Norwich for work for seven years with no great issue and if you stick to speed limits it’s basically a 10 to 15 minute trundle Sorry don’t know much about South Repps Stalham is OK-ish, but that’s just personal opinion Would endorse what Ulla said about Reedham. Like Acle benefits from rail link to Norwich

Can't think of any reason, particularly Old Catton to avoid it. One of the best suburbs of Norwich, widely agreed upon. So i'd be interested to hear it!

Lived there à while ago for almost six years, up by the supermarket. Admittedly, lovely area from Ring Road up to Church Lane and Catton Park but the rest of it has always felt to me like Stepford Wives country. But, as always, one man’s meat and all that

Agree about Blofield, it’s becoming huge nowadays. Every piece of field is being developed with new houses, and they just have the tiny newsagents (who is right miserable sod) and the Spar a few doors down. Just the one pub, and the roads are a nightmare especially during school terms. Ludham, a very quiet village with very little around it. Noticed it’s become rather unruly with the addition of residents in School Close. Full of the great unwashed and parents with have a dozen kids who can’t find the time to work. Acle isn’t too bad, but again the population has probably doubled with new housing at every corner of the village. Add to this the high street has lost one the shops so you’re stuck with the little supermarket and that’s about it. Couple of nice pubs though. Poringland is a lovely part of the county, housing I’m guessing is a lot more expensive as it’s closer to Norwich.

With the addition of the average speed cameras it’s basically cut the accidents right down. Although with it being now just 50mph and some worrying about going close to 50mph, they’re barely going above 40mph it’s become a tedious journey nowadays. [Post edited 27 Jul 14:19]

If Poringland is on your radar, how about Brooke, Alpington or Bergh Apron. All a bit quieter than Poringland, Brooke had two pubs, the kings head and white horse. The wheelwrights at Alpington is also decent. No pubs in Bergh Apton but is really quiet and has a manor owned by someone who made substantial money on Only fans if that makes a difference.

Only if she (assume she) invites me round! I went to the other school. When were you there? ty, Brooke is on the list, the other 2 I dont though I do fear with some of the smaller villages availability of properties might be an issue but I'll have a look at all 3

It’s been dueled all the way to acle now. Personally I wouldn’t go there. There’s something a bit unattractive to me about a lot of places east of Norwich. Alysham not too bad. I think wymondham is still seen as more affluent and desirably, has a Waitrose! Why not Norwich?

Wouldn't rule it out but 1. The cat, dont want to worry too much about traffic as he likes a wander and atm hes got a leafy alley at the back so he doesn't have to think too much about cars, might seem like a silly reason but I proper love my cat. 2. To be that bit closer to the coast but that isnt a deal breaker. Wymondham has grown so much since I left I don't actually know half of it, I wouldnt rule it out but do worry the traffic will be an absolute nightmare on office days. Also possibly Mulbarton, Bracon Ash which is all a bit more familiar to me than east of the city

Aylsham is nice if a bit pricey. If Holt is Waitrose, Aylsham is Sainsbury’s. Also, lots of building going on there over the last few years with more to come. Think it’s one of the designated areas for development in Norfolk, as is Rackheath

Everywhere in and around Norwich is getting developed. As someone else has said rackheath is seeing thousands of new houses. You are still going to find quieter villages. If you fancy the sea and a fantastic beach you might think of gorleston where prices will be cheaper. Plenty of new houses near the hospital there. I still think Norwich is nice to live in. Plenty of nice shops, bars, restaurants, theatres. Just a shite football team.

| Norfolk based blues- advice and recommendations please on 18:32 - Jul 27 with 1288 views | Meadowlark | The A47 is now dualled from the Broadland Business Park as far as Acle so it only takes 15 minutes. The BBP is not really in the city. Acle and Upton would be on my radar, also because Acle has a railway link and is on the main bus route should alternatives ever be needed. Easy train journey to Portman road if you fancy a few celebratory pints. THe White Horse in Upton is community owned. if you don't fancy that area I'd always look for somewhere not far from a railway station. Although that Brodland business park is a car only location!! Wymondham is just a quick zip around the southern bypass so not too bad, but BBP is also on the Northern relief road which gives fast access to Salhouse and even Wroxham. Brundall is probably the closest decent sized village with a pub and railway station. Nice part of the world. Nearly as nice as Suffolk. | | | |

Agree, I think the city is incredibly vibrant now and I love pretty much everything about it apart from Carrot Road and what lies within.

It also has a community owner shop and pub. Easy reach for the offices. Acle has a Good Beer Guide pub in the Hermitage and an excellent local social club. But no countryside for a cat. Cantley has another GBG pub the Cock. With the sugar factory closing down in the next few months houses there and at next door Reedham may become cheaper. I can confirm Reeham has 3 pubs and a station which will be of no use to you to get to work. But it may help you to get to the match. South Walsham has no surviving pubs. North Washam however has cracking ones. Gillingham on the Norfolk/Suffolk border near Beccles is out of the way and has two good pubs. Loddon/Chedgrave to the south east is a nice village with quieter parts and a couple of excellent pubs.
