Central midfield 15:15 - Jul 29 with 1937 viewscbower

Everyone knows we need to strengthen in there with probably two quality recruits minimum. A yone else getting the feeling these could end up being Premier League loans? Just not been much rumour noise about players in that area of the park except for Morita (and latterly Lukic and that was a few days ago and almost in passing too). Such a critical part of the puzzle for me and I'm just starting to get a tincy-wincy bit concerned.

Loans would probably be the cash effective way of securing a higher value player than might otherwise be available to buy. I dont think it is a good thing that this player or players are not already with us but we know how this goes, sale or loan isnt about what Ipswich want. We can go buy many average players but we will typically have to be patient for the right players.

One loan at 9 or 10 and one at CM

Either loans or we are waiting on some dominoes falling. I think in general the higher the quality the longer we will have to wait. Getting some solid business done earlier gives us a bit more scope to wait and see.

Poll: What % of our full potential are we currently playing at?

I'd doubt any rival is sanctioning a loan to us for an experienced Premier League CM and it's fairly unlikely we are going to have youngsters in there this season.

Equally if they are selling they are going to want the money now.

The likes of Yates, Hughes, Irregbonum, Lukic etc are all squad players who will need to be replaced.

I'd feel better if we caught 1 , big fish in there pretty soon. I agree we need 2, with Matusiwa & Nunez and perhaps Taylor then pushing them for minutes. I'd like to see 1 in pretty soon with a chunk of pre season behind them, with perhaps the 2nd waiting until later in the window.

Kalvin Phillips is going to Sheff United so he is a no go this time round...

We cannot go into the Sunderland game with Jack Taylor as an option, he is a nice lad but he is a top league one player at best.

We have Al Hamadi and Hirst as 9's back up and Jack Taylor, Cam Humph and Finn Barbrook as CM options.

What can possibly go wrong!

He's a far better footballer than that. I'd rather have him in there than Nunez tbh, but we need better than both.

Wouldn’t want Phillips back anyway. Such a disappointment last time around. Championship is the right level for him now.

We need a solid defensive CM and a box-to-box midfielder like a Morris/ Hackney combo.

I don't know where Nunez fits this season. I think he is going to get swallowed up in the PL.

I think this is a bit disingenuous. Taylor was brilliant in some pretty big games last season and ultimately proved to be a more reliable midfield player than Neil, Cajuste and Nunez.

He's easily a top Championship player. If we sold him today he would command £5M+. We obviously need better starters but if he's a bench option I don't have that much issue.

Every summer countless threads on this board discredit him and label him expendable and every year he's exceeded our expectations as a fan base.

None of us thought he could contribute to a PL team, he did. None of us thought he could start for a promotion chasing team, he did and we went up.

I don;t really mind if he plays for Bolton or Bradford the fact is he is not strong enough to give Man City a game as a starting midfielder.

We need players who can not only give the other sides a game but beat them, that's the sole objective.

If the narrative is Ipswich Town aim to be a sustainable premier league from this season, then you cannot have a Nunez or Taylor in that starting 11.

If the narrative is we are going to give a it a go, see what happens and if we go down so be it, then by all means start a nunez or Jack Taylor.

There's quite a big gap between "not good enough to give Man City a game" and "top League One player at best".

He is not good enough, which ever way it is described.

Nice bloke though, never in doubt.

Who is saying we will start Taylor and Nunez?! Literally, and I mean literally no one. No one is thinking it, no one is saying it's fine, no one is expecting it. We will not, barring a catastrophe, start with Taylor and Nunez.

The absolute closest anyone has got is to say that they might be adequate bench players at a push, but again I don't think relied on to be so every game. Everyone is expecting at least 2, probably 3 players in their positions to knock them down the order. Everyone.

Weird why some of our fans seem to think this way about shaping the squad. If it hasn't already happened by yesterday then the club the players and the fans are obviously 110 percent for it and settling for relegation.

I don't think anyone is disagreeing with that. I'd probably add Matusiwa to the list, although he's closest of the 3. Need 2 in.

Okay you might not think he's good enough but there isn't really a realistic world where we bring in 4 new central midfielders this summer. That's the only possible scenario he becomes surplus to requirements.

After arrivals he will end up 4/5th option with Nunez, but I don't think that is the end of the world.

Midfield is defo a concern but I think other PL clubs won’t sell us their players until they have replacements lined up first. We are probably still scouring Europe and South America too for recruits.

Well if Taylor or Nunez are third choice or forth choice they are expected to be able to start games. There will be injuries, illness, bannes, etc. We need one new number 6 and two new number 8. That is three new CMs. In my book Taylor or Nunez can be fifth choice at best. We need players that are ready and of the right quality to start games when the prefered options are out with injuries etc.
It is also that we do not want to massively reduce our competivness at the end of games (substitutions) - which often is when the games are decided.

Taylor was the most improved player think its totally unfair to criticise I believe he could have lots of 20 minute cameos for us next season.

Jack Taylor is very underrated footballer ,2 get a better central midfield player with Premier Leauge experience is going 2 cost big bucks ,would certainly smash Towns record fee
