He really is so much more suited to that 10. Still lots to learn but he has such a silky touch and he can make some effortless incisive passes.

We know if we can get him in pockets he has a fantastic shot on him as well. Really hope he keeps on developing.

Seemed a bit more physical today as well.

Cant disagree with that tbh ... He is SO young and now at a club at a level that I dont think he's ready for, yet. A season in CC with a decent club( who ?) is what's required as we cant afford to carry anyone in that 25 squad in terms of limited playing time, can we.

He won't count towards 25 man squad though as under 21?

He's nowhere near Premier League football ready though, as a 10 or a winger.

Season long loan in the Championship is a must for his development.

But to be played as a 10 and not stuck out wide, can a Club enforce where they want their player to play?

We will also hopefully have a bit of a cup run and aren't our U21s in that Johnsons Paint thingy (or whatever it is called now)?

Colchester, Luton & Peterborough in our group.First game, against ColU, beginning of September.

Not really I don’t think, probably cut down the likelihood anyone would take him to a significantly shorter list.

I thought he was really poor last season tbh. He's a young lad and needs time, but I saw nothing to suggest he's remotely close to a premier league player. Very meek, struggled to influence games for the most part, I'm not sure what his USP is meant to be as he's not especially quick or strong, doesn't seem to have the ability to beat a man, crossing from wide areas was largely poor, and his finishing was average. Still has time on his side but as we sit here today I'm not convinced he will bring anything to the party this season.

It felt to me like a lot of people seeing what they wanted to see with him, largely because he had an £18m (EIGHTEEN!) price tag around his neck. Had we signed him for £800k people would speak about him in the same terms as Al-Hamadi, accept he's nowhere near the level, and nobody would be expecting him to have a squad place with us this season.

Might sound harsh but I just don't see what we've paid so much money for right now. I'd look to get him out on loan where he's going to start 40 games.

I can't agree with that. Not all of it at least. 'meek' I do think was a reasonable word for him at times last season. Young boy coming to a very physical league so can understand it but that doesn't make you wrong. At times he was far too easy to knock off the ball or look close in a 50/50.

But, his technique, weight of pass and manipulation of the ball at times was fantastic. Glimpses sometimes but you could absolutely see a footballer and that's why he was getting the game time. He can knock a pass and deliver a baller probably better than anyone else in the team. Nunez a contender of course.

What excites me about him is the potential and the development still in him. You can add the physicality and I think there is speed to unlock (McKenna referenced it). Reminder me a bit of when De Bruyne went to City. Mourinho doesn't wait and never has in his career. But people knew he had something. Not saying he will teach that level but he has something others don't. It's never been a proof of future success but he's broken a lot of records at international youth level for Norway.

Agree with this. He is a talent. We didn't play as a team last year. In fact I can only remember about three goals that were a result of good passing moves. He scored some vital goals for us. Think with some good coaching he could be a very good player.

Disagree - seeing things that are not there.
Feels like a vanity project by the recruitment team.

Agree with your assessment of how he fared last season relative to the price tag. A couple of excellent moments but his normal was that of a player fighting or struggling to adapt to Championship level.

I want to believe his potential is far above what we saw, which places me half in the group you outline in the second paragraph. I wouldn't have that same optimism had he arrived for £800K no doubt, but I'd like to think I'd be open to good improvement still based on his age and inexperience.

I'd only envisage him having a squad place if the thought was that we could better accelerate his conditioning and other aspects in-house, rather than at the club standard he'd need to drop down to for reliable minutes.

Totally agree.

I can't believe some of the descriptions of him. Fanciful at best, but, really, wholly inaccurate puff-pieces. It's really fiction or someone re-writing or re-hashing the truth.

At the end of the season, he had to be taken out of the starting line-up because he was struggling so badly. And he was affecting our chances of promotion. No hate. No BS. That was the truth. And he looked miserable and weighed down. It was a difficult watch.
And a new season... a new manager... a clean slate. Could well be stronger, fitter this season, a new dose of confidence, a season's experience under the belt...,but do we have go so far over-the-top about him? Anybody not agreeing with it would be considered negative or hateful about him. And that's not true. We want him to do well and be happy on the field.

Blaming fans or the previous manager is bl00dy daft.
It's accepted young players get shoved into certain positions when they're learning the game. Even playing in an unfamiliar wide position, he still should have delivered more or adapted better. He got worse as the season went on.

And it is true... if he'd have been a cheap punt rather than an 18 million quid punt, many would be thinking more clearly and seeing a loan move away as best for his development.

I'm leaving it up to GON. If Egeli shows something in training that makes him feel he's got something for a PL team and he might have pushed on from last season... then great, but if it's felt he's better of getting experience at a lesser level then it sounds a smart move. Take the 18 million quid price tag out of the equation and stop looking at him as if he's the next best thing. Over-egging the Egeli does him no favours.

That is the problem when Ashton overly focuses on buying “players for the future” whom on paper looks like the next big thing but are totally unfit for purpose for the rigour of the PL or even the Championship at the moment.

Coming from Europe, where the style of football in the La Liga/Ligue 1/Bundesliga or in the case of Egeli, the Danish Superliga is very different, players need time to acclimatise and adjust - preferably in the reserves, U21 or sent on loan. You can’t expect them to plug and play immediately. I am having the same vibes about Emersonn.

Problem is, we aren’t Man City or Chelsea we cannot afford to throw tens of millions to hoard and speculate on future talents. If Ashton wants young talents, fine, but for every position there needs to be an experienced cover.

No evidence to support that statement at all. Mark Ashton has 3 promotions in 5 years on his CV.

Referencing one signing in a 5 year period to make a point is pretty lousy work.

I think potential and future are doing a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to Egeli, which is understandable for a player of his age and I don't disagree with it either. I'm remaining open minded in terms of his ceiling and what he goes on to achieve, to be perfectly honest if someone told me at 25 he's a premier league regular I'd be surprised, but maybe not massively surprised, if he found his niche. Equally I wouldn't be surprised if he's one people look back on as an expensive mistake. Only time will tell with that.

We're in the here and now, where the 8 months from September to April will go a long way to determining our league status for the 27/28 season and potentially, given the nature of the premier league, well beyond. Its such a crucial period that we have to balance the here and now alongside developing for the future. I don't think we can afford to carry a project at PL level. I'm not sure where it leaves him, but what his next 12 months looks like must be a big consideration.
