It’s said that after the Beatles split, Lennon and McCartney would often write with the other in mind*. There would be secret codes in the lyrics that only the other would understand. That’s how I feel about our transfer business this summer. Ashton is saying to McKenna “here’s what you could have had”. He seems determined to prove to McKenna that he can bring in players good enough to keep us up and that deep down McKenna didn’t believe we could. Has McKenna leaving put some fire in Mark Ashton’s belly and the desire to prove McKenna's wrong?

I think it probably comes down to the fact that McKenna was too rigid in his recruitment asks - remember that memo about needing to speak fluent English, have experience playing here etc. O'Neil, I'm assuming, is happier to mix it up a bit in terms of players, having had little choice to do anything else at Wolves.

All i know is it just doesn't feel the same this preseason without KM at the wheel. Really trying to get behind GON but it just isnt the same. Eventually I will get over it.

I certainly hope so, for your sake, living in the past, however recent that past may be is a recipe for stagnation at best and disaster at worst. I had to get over SBR leaving and believe me, that was a whole different kettle of fish. So I did.

Maybe we've simply learnt from experience. Don't good people usually get better at things after learning from certain experiences. Might be Gaz is also having an influence.

It's too early yet. After 5 games, the general consensus could be we messed up with recruitment.

Could be Mark and Kieran don't do subliminal messages and regularly crack open a tin or two and have a chinwag.

It felt last time around that McKenna was caught between a rock and a hard place - rip up the team that won back to back promotions and was absolutely adored by the fan base OR keep the majority of them here and add several players who a) would hopefully elevate the quality of the group to keep us up, b) sign good characters that the fans could get behind also and c) players who wouldn’t cause rifts in dressing rooms because they were maybe on higher wages etc.

That’s not a criticism either, would’ve been an incredibly hard job to manage that, and ultimately we got promoted when nobody expected it.

Do love McKenna and wish he was here to oversee this season, think he’d have been more expansive in the transfer market, some of the early links suggested that, but here we are.

Suppose the narrative with O’Neil is that you’re simply here to keep us up, and looking upwards and we’ll give you (within reason) whatever players you see fit to do as you have no loyalty to the current bunch.
