It’s said that after the Beatles split, Lennon and McCartney would often write with the other in mind*. There would be secret codes in the lyrics that only the other would understand. That’s how I feel about our transfer business this summer. Ashton is saying to McKenna “here’s what you could have had”. He seems determined to prove to McKenna that he can bring in players good enough to keep us up and that deep down McKenna didn’t believe we could. Has McKenna leaving put some fire in Mark Ashton’s belly and the desire to prove McKenna's wrong?

There are many reasons why we really struggled in the PL last time. Most promoted clubs do, so we were no exception.
My understanding was McKenna said who he wanted, and Ashton and his team did their best to get that player. Ive also heard the lstter tram using Brightons matrix, identified players who were presented to McKenna who had final say on yea, or neigh. Whatever, we essentially got promoted " too soon" and we're nowhere near ready for the PL on or off the pitch.
The owners have been outstanding. The club has developed further and we are noticeably fishing in a different pond for our players. These players want to play in the PL and if they see Town as a "way in", and they are of the required quality at a more realistic price compared to UK based players, Id take that.
There has been significant change in the squad at just aboyt every season as a result if promotions / relegation. It really does all take time to shake down, and bed in. We need to get behind GON and " his" squad this season. Who knows, he might actually pull it off and we stay up. If not, it wont be for the lack of effort / trying by him or the Club as a whole. I think we need to try and enjoy the ride, so to speak and really get behind them all.

I think it's almost impossible to get the McKenna feeling back - it was magical and extraordinary and probably needed to start in League One. Forever grateful and fantastic memories.
If you put that out of your mind for a minute and imagine GON taking over from say Joe Royle (if he had got us up), then you can get quite excited about a young, dynamic, open manager, with three years of top level experience and some success at keeping struggling teams up. |  |

I think, in this instance, our recruitment team is just trying to do the job required to give us the best chance of staying in the Prem. No more to it than that.
Sure, it's a big push, but we have come to that point in the process where extra effort is needed to take the next step - becoming established in the top tier - and our profile is better than last time around (a yo-yo team, rather than straight outta League One). I doubt the change of manager has made much difference.
Romantic as your theory might be, Ashton is a very experienced football administrator, McKenna is not the first manager who he's seen move on. |  |

On that I was pleasantly surprised in the game at Wycombe at how 'in tune' several of the new players seemed to be - Maeda and Fatawu on the wings seemed to be in tune with their fullbacks/other forwards about when to make their runs/receive the ball,etc.
Clearly still a load to do (and this was against a League One team) but I thought overall it was quite cohesive considering the new players. |  |

McKenna was a legend for this club, and his contribution should never be forgotten or diminished.
However, he was a young and fresh coach, and I think he went into the Premier League season quite naive and idealistic.

It made me feel a little bit optimistic about the coming season under Gary O'Neil. We need to be horrible to play against, we need to play every game to stifle the specific opposition in front of us.
To survive the Prem, I believe you have to get points on the board early while signings at other clubs are still bedding in, where other teams haven't got their patterns of play nailed down, while the loan window is still open. Then during that latter part of the season we can nick points off teams that are too focused on or exhausted from the European games.
I think McKenna was too wedded to our particular patterns of play and identity in the Prem, and that's a luxury a newly promoted team can't afford. We're Cape Verde, not Spain. | | | |

The lesson of the the last Premier League campaign for me is that it is not enough to have 11 players of Premier League standard..
For many games last time, we managed to compete with our starting 11 but the other teams could change things by having the option of bringing on top class players from the bench.
This time it could be said that were are acquiring players of a higher level than we did last time but we aren't doing it a great rate and perhaps the proof of the pudding will be in how many we manage to acquire in the end.
Certainly, we are a long way off the number of players that Sunderland acquired which turned out to be a successful strategy, but it is not clear to me that we are aiming to match what they did. [Post edited 3 Aug 10:43]

When you go into the Premier League with a clapped out midfield, a winger and fullback who didn't perform to anywhere near the levels they had in the Championship and were relying on most of your recruits being Championship players and a midfielder who was surplus to Man City requirements and Town were trying to resurrect his career it was fairly obvious that Town would offload players who were of significant value and go again.
This time around they are trying to bring in class players. But it's difficult with limited funds and also to attract certain players. | | | |
