I'll raise my head again. It seems very troubling on face value, but there is some different context. He has spent a significant period (8 years) tackling extremism as a reformed character (in the words of others). So it is tricky. I would have said no, but I am flipping on the idea of second chances, particularly given his work.
| conservative twtd-ers on 16:28 - Aug 4 with 2413 views | balcombeblue | There are a lot of Guardian links posted in general on here. I just read through and see this context is missing. More broadly, is this a sensible omission? I think it's very important in this case. | | | |

No second chances for anyone who thinks climate change is a real threat though? It's not a serious party and she isn't a serious leader.

| conservative twtd-ers on 16:33 - Aug 4 with 2357 views | J2BLUE | She doesn't have a clue. She's unelectable and a placeholder while they have no chance of getting elected. There are only two serious options. Labour, if Burnham can turn things around, and Reform. Reform are 'serious' because they have support not because they have any answers or ability to change things. Badenoch is so desperate to be seen as having some sort of relevance I don't think she cares what type of attention it is as long as someone is remembering the Tories exist. | | | |

Regrettably that's true. I'd really like a centre-right, one nation Conservative Party to be electable. I also think it's in the UK's interest. There are some impressive qualities about Badenoch, but too few and too few around her.

I dont think that wanting a different approach to climate change from Ed Milliband's "lets close businesses and destroy livelihoods" ideas is excessive. It would all be fine and I would accept the pain if it was going to work, but it is n't. With the rest of the world piling in on coal and oil what ever our little country does will make no difference. Change China and America is where it is at. Not expensive heat pumps here. You may wish to have a closer look at china’s energy policy. You might even find that it changing…

Completely agree. | | | |

| conservative twtd-ers on 16:57 - Aug 4 with 2103 views | SuperKieranMcKenna | Surprised she’s lasted so long given polling, UK politics is moving to the extremes and dragging the traditional parties with it. Albeit Burnham so far looks like the only moderate central option (there’s Lib Dem’s, but they get precious little airtime given the number of seats they have). | | | |

I remember Maajid Nawaz standing for the Liberals in Kilburn - I even met him on a street corner. He had a similar but different back story, but don't remember anyone questioning him, although that's not to make a direct comparison as I know nothing of this bloke in question

Oh, so he’s the one who was imprisoned for harassing Luciana Berger. I’m all for second chances if someone is genuinely trying to reform. I’ve no idea whether he is and certainly wouldn’t take Badenoch’s word for it. Genuine or mirroring the MAGA approach of getting your ‘warriors’ in the team? Who knows.

| conservative twtd-ers on 18:16 - Aug 4 with 1852 views | GlasgowBlue | It's a definite no from me. The crimes he commited and his former beliefs should bar him from representing any political party and holding public office. It's admirable that he has renounced his former disgusting views and I understand he has been certified by the Home Office to train police officers on antisemitism and on countering extremism. If he is genuinely remorseful, and I don't have any reason to believe that he isn't, then this is the path he should follo if he wants to contribute to society in some way. | |

Mathew Collins is a former member of the NF, BNP and Combat 18. He has renounced his views and is now a researcher and Head of Intelligence for Hop Not Hate. So people can turn their lives around and renounce their past. But there is much good that Joshua Bonehill-Paine without holding public office.

From a politics point of view the optics of it are/were terrible. Was only ever going to be picked apart.

I think that's fair, and looks to be the same decision he's made himself.

I quite like the balance shown on this one, in that it would be easy to pile on someone who once held those views. But hes reformed and doing good work. Elected office is too much, but hope he continues what he’s doing.

Agree with that, I think his redemption story is quite a good one, but putting him forward for elected office was never going to fly.

I think he made the right call. I’ve found this case fascinating. It’s raised some really interesting questions and points around understanding how depraved some extremists are, how to tackle online extremism, the value of rehabilitation, society’s treatment of ex-offenders, the role of ex-offenders in education, the role of victims in the justice process, standards required for public office, etc.

I'm no Tory but I don't really see what she brings. It started under Johnson but it seems to me that they're becoming an increasingly narrow church. Right of right of centre which is neither one thing or the other. I'm sure there must be a lot of moderate, centre right rather than right wing Conservatives who don't rave about the likes of Badenoch, Philp, Trott etc

They are basically a budget version of Reform.
