Substitutions under GON 18:20 - Aug 5 with 1376 viewsTwoKnightsInIpswich

I'm not knocking KM for how he changed our club but I'm actually looking forward to seeing how substitutions can be used to change formation or close out a game.

Under KM we could pretty much say who was being substituted and at what minute of the game. It was almost substitutions were predetermined before the game and they happened if we were winning or not.

It will be interesting to see how GON uses his substitutes in the first few games.

Is this narrative about KM not being good at using subs still a thing.

No.

His use of substitutes worked fine in League 1 and Championship. It was ineffective, for several reasons, in Premier League.

It will be nice to be unpredictable for a change.

Swear we had the most goal involvements from substitutes over a season a couple of times

McKenna more often than not made exactly the right substitutions, in my opinion.
However, I am more interested in whether O'Neil will use a more regular starting eleven. McKenna's rotation policy worked well, but there can be benefits to rotating a bit less too. It will be exciting to see.

KMs subs was one of the main reasons we won promotions, hopefully GOs subs will as successful.

He was bringing on Harness and Al Hamadi.

He could've made them in minute 7 or 70 and it probably wouldn't have made a difference lol.

If GoN is half as good at tactical subs as KM, we'll be doing well.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

It might be interesting, but it might not. It's a common criticism of managers that they don't make subs early enough or that they're predictable.

McKenna managed his squad superbly, so it's no surprise a lot of subs probably were premeditated. GON might not be quite the same, but that could cause other challenges.

It should be very interesting in general how it all goes.

Probably down to options available as much as anything. When he had a surplus of attacking players he could rely on, being able to swap out the 3 or 4 of the front four became our signature move. It was effective allowing us to press from the front for 90 mins, so there was no need to do anything differently. He wasn’t swapping out others because we didn’t have the same depth in other positions.

In the PL, the quality wasn’t there so he delayed subs as I suspect he knew our best shot was often with the starters and the subs would have less impact.

Maybe.

Nah.

Granted 3 promotions in 5 years but his subs being sh1t is the thing many armchair pundits miss.

Glad this OP has raised it tbh - needs to be spoken about.

Don't forget most of our players were "overcoached" too.

Absolute tosh.

I mean, if you ignore the large number of times his subs made the difference then yes you make a valid point.

In the prem he had few options, in the other leagues his subs often made a big difference.

Did he often change style and formation with his subs? No. But the world cup should have shown how that often fails.

Just realised I think you were taking the Mick. At least I hope you were?

How many times did his substitutions change games, pretty much every game.
