Just been made redundant 08:01 - Aug 6 with 4548 viewsOnlyOneSuperJim

Unfortunately I've just been made from my job with very little notice.
Struggling to come to terms with being at home despite trying as hard as I can to secure employment but doesn't appear to be much about and am desperate.
Just asking if anyone knows of any jobs which involve Warehouse positions, Stores , Driving jobs etc -I would be so grateful - only really looking for M- F work and ideally not shift work but maybe it's something I will have to consider but extremely keen to get back to the real world of working again ASAP - this is killing me.

Didn't you get a consultation period? How many others were made redundant?

Unfortunately it's only a small unit and only 3 of us but head office decided to close our unit and pay us 4 weeks notice

Sounds like a tough time for you. Being off work when you are so used to working is very tough. There are plenty of decent people on here who you can offload to/help out.

Something will crop up and at that point you won't look back.

Echo this.

Fortunately never happened to me but have been in a situation where the writing was on the wall for a particular team I was on and we needed to look for something else with a good degree of haste.

All I can say is, with the benefit of hindsight, it was the very best thing that could have happened and I've never looked back. I have heard countless stories like this too - usually these things turn out to be a blessing.

Chin up, something good will come out of this and you'll look back in a few years and be thankful this happened.

Really sorry to hear that, SuperJim.

If you are looking to get back into work asap, as someone who has been made redundant, you can contact the local Job Centre and ask for the Rapid Response Service. They specialise in getting you back into work as quickly as possible, apparently.

Information here: https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-

Best of luck with your job searching.

Sorry to hear that. I have a relative near Ipswich whose business was hit hard during Covid so picked up a job in Morrisons warehouse to top up his income. Always worth trying the supermarkets who are looking for people in the warehouse dept and drivers.

Sometimes I think about the frothing lunatics I’ve put on ignore, who will have kept replying to me again and again, but I don’t even realise they exist.

Very sorry to hear this. My job was put at risk of redundancy in June with a super long consultation process so not as stressful as your situation but I've struggled enough to process things, so can only imagine what your dealing with.

Having been through it a couple of times and having now successfully secured something else just last Thursday my advice to you would be to just take control of the situation. Redundancy is something that happens to us through no choice, but being proactive like you are here and thinking how your skills and experience fit other roles that aren't the same as what you have had previous will help. When looking for other jobs, do your best to try and speak to the hiring manager and introduce yourself with why their job interests you. In a world of many applicants it can help you stand out. I only achieved interviews on roles where I had done this.

Finally don't be worried about failing a couple of interviews or using a couple as practice. They can be great experience even if the job isn't the best fit for you, use it as a time to understand if the manager really is the right fit for you.

Good luck over the coming weeks, will happily review a CV or presentation or anything iif it helps.

Really sorry to hear that, but there still needs to be a consultation.

With numbers that low, there is no time limit on the consultation unfortunately but they should still have had a meeting or discussion with you about the potential redundancy before they made a final decision.

Might be worth having a chat with the CAB or similar, if you've not had that, it's effectively unfair dismissal.

Horrible being made redundant, during my working life I think I lost count of the number of times I was made redundant but it never got easy.

I would say looking at your post you're flexible with the type of jobs you're prepared to do, that will help. Try a job centre they are always helpful, I know a few people who have used Bluearrow to find jobs, although I've never used them personally. One caveat being some of those jobs were temp roles.

Sorry to hear that.

Couple of suggestions for the period until you get another job, if not enjoying kicking your heels at home. Firstly, get a temporary (free/cheap) hobby, e.g. going for walks, volunteering for something. Secondly, if reasonably practical, start doing odd jobs for people you know. Stuff like a bit of tidying up paintwork, or repairing a fence. Nothing too strenuous or requiring loads of knowlege/tools (steer clear of electrics, for legal reasons). You might find it turns into a viable business.

Just things to keep you occupied, maybe small pleasures/wins to help with the mental situation.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

You mention 4 weeks' notice but I am not sure if you mean by that statutory redundancy pay, which ought to be on top of pay while you are serving out your notice or pay in lieu of notice.

You have to have worked for 2 years but here is a couple of links, the second of which enables you to calculate the amount to which you are entitled.

https://www.gov.uk/redundancy-

https://www.gov.uk/calculate-y

I believe that redundancy pay up to a maximum of £30,000 is tax free.

EDIT: looking at the reference in your OP to very little notice, I wonder if you were given the correct redundancy notice.

Here's another link.

Really sorry to hear that.

If its warehouse work I would suggest Amazon, they tend to resource up ahead of Black Friday and Christmas so seasonally the timing might be good over the next month or 2.

Good luck, I hope you find something soon.

Echo this. I’ve been there a couple of times too and it does hit you hard and it’s not easy. It’s fine to feel a bit crp about it. There will be many able to offer far better advice than me but a few thoughts anyway:

Make sure you register for Jobseekers Allowance or whatever it is these days. If nothing else your NI will be paid for you.

As Wallingford says, things always work out however much in those low moments one feels they won’t. It’s a cliche, but despite the downside this is also an opportunity.

Be disciplined. I found being at home ok because I planned what I was going to do every day. A percentage of seeking work and a percentage of doing what I wanted to do - fun stuff.

Do the basics. What are your skills? What do you like doing? What are you not so good at, what do you hate? Write a CV. It’s quite cathartic.

When it comes down to it the world of work isn’t personal. That works both ways. One may get made redundant, one may just move on. I learned to treat it as a bit of a game and in seeking work, you only need to get one hit, regardless of how many times you are rejected.

In terms of taking a job you are not sure about or one with inconvenient hours, you may have to consider it. In doing so, you might find it leads to far better opportunities. It did for me a couple of times.

Just a few personal thoughts from my own somewhat out of date experience.

You will be fine.

If not now, they'll be plenty of work at Sizewell, espeically the big warehouses near Orwell.

Good luck!

Sorry, one other thing occurs to me.

I have no idea of your personal circumstances or age but this could present a really good time to re train. Especially as the direction of travel in warehousing seems to be towards greater automation.

If I was entering or re-entering the workforce now I would giving serious consideration to learning a trade e.g. building, plumbing etc.

From a quick browse online it does seem that via job center plus there are a number of courses you can enroll in to. You might find this page useful also:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/fr

Again, no idea of your circumstances, but this 100% the route I'd go down if it was me.

AI is coming for useless white collar bods like me but there will always be the need for trades people! And it can be very lucrative I'm led to believe.

Probably worth investigating the local market.

The boyfriend of my wife's niece did a bricklaying course at a further education college but was the only one on his course to get a job out of it.

It appears that it quite expensive to take on apprentices (I think things like insurance may come into play), and he only managed to succeed because the niece's father is a self-employed bricklayer and was keen to take him on.

I have no idea, just thinking out loud as to what I'd do if it was me!

I suppose going self employed off the bat isn't feasible?

Maybe plumbers are more in demand than brickies?
