Regarding discussion on the need for a more creative player in our midfield, I do agree in the main. But looking at our most successful recent period, we really had 2 really strong ball winners in Luongo and Morsy?

Luongo much better at finding passes than given credit for but in the main both were highly effective at winning it and keeping it ticking.

From sound of it as it stands Lukic and Luis have the fundamentals of a pair who will work hard out of possession give us some bite in midfield. Lukic from small clips I have seen looks similar to Luongo in being more box to box.

With an Enciso type in the 10, Fatawu, Maeda and Davis on the break it could be a good balance to have and give us a chance to be competitive which is the main thing.

What's gone before in this case was in a much weaker league. It may work, it may not. I'd far prefer to see a creative, progressive CM along with the CDM's, but then, that's my type of football. I guess whatever it takes to survive is ok, for one season anyway.

Understand that, but to that point we had that type of midfield in a team at the top end of the league. And scored plenty of goals and created plenty of chances, by feeding the attacking players. Wouldn’t say Morsy and Luongo had loads of assists by the end but managed to get us control in games and the players at the top end did the damage.

Hopefully it works similar in this case, but time will tell and still expect us to get another option if Taylor moves on

I agree - I think that the nature of the PL dictates that all players must have a level of creativity.

Chances need to be created from long passes out of defence or from a central midfielder running with the ball.

We will need a lot of goals to survive, but I agree. A solid midfield is the most important part of any side and ours looks a lot better than it did 10 days or so ago. We will still need to find 40+ goals from somewhere, but as it stands, we look a lot stronger than 2 years ago.

It’s what we need for survival. You have to earn your right to play in this league. And what I will say is, despite Florentino and Lukic being more defensive minded midfielders, their all round quality will be infinitely higher than anything else we have here and will still offer more of an attacking outlet than, say, Jack Taylor, who may be more attacking but lacks the overall quality to showcase that at this level.

I will also add that we will hope to end this window with an abundance of quality attacking options, including Enciso, and it will be their job to deliver the main attacking threat.

Always felt Morsy and Luongo were good footballers. Could mix it, but could also look after the ball and bring the ball forward and make the right pass. Nothing fancy, but good all-round footballers. Just the PL was a level too much for them.

I worry a little about Luis as most Burnley reports say he's very good off the ball and intercepting, but a very poor passer. We'll see.

I'll be happy enough with a solid midfield, but they'll have to be good distributors.
Might be unpopular, but I didn't rate Cajuste in the PL. He left our midfield exposed and didn't help our skipper enough.... yet he got a free pass because he could drop an elegant shoulder or pirouette and he gave the fans a few nice moments in a terrible season.

I agree. I do think we will get more of a ball player in just to have the option really but that might even just be one of our loans and they may not start as often as Lukic and Luis. I feel like the signings are pointing towards a really solid base with players that can break in transition and in the moments we can create turnovers high up the pitch - we aren't going to dominate possession or be breaking down deep blocks often.

Nothing wrong with a workhorse midfield, but even in the Morsy / Luongo pivot, Morsy put up really strong numbers in breaking lines with progressive passes and carries.

In a Lukic / Luis pivot it might mean the responsibility of breaking lines falls to other players in build up, which is fine but we will need to recruit a right back and left centre back who are strong in ball progression to provide some balance.

I think we need the option of someone who can progress the ball in midfield, otherwise we will become quite predictable from a tactical perspective.

We have earned the right to play in the Premier League, we now need to stay there long enough to be considered a regular Premier League side.

I agree, a progressive RB is very key in this (possible) system. I do wonder if that is why we saw Mcateer playing there midweek...?

I think the bottom line is these are all strong experienced players, Yes, O'Neil still has to put a starting 11 together but he has the ingredients. One or two more will give him a very good chance of survival.

I’d agree with you if we were to play a 3 man midfield. Personally think that’s what we should have done last time we were here. If we’re going for a 2 I’d be happy with 2 ball winners if that gives the likes of Enciso a bit more licence to go forward
